As many of you have said, the position/placement of the nub on the PSP is friggin terrible. Because the PSP is not a dual shock and has no handles, you have to keep your thumb mostly bent the whole time you use the nub and it's just very awkward. You can't help but get cramps after like 20 minutes.

You should try adjusting how you hold the system. I don't hold it the same way when I'm using the nub as I do when I'm using the d-pad. If you hold more towards the tips of your fingers, your thumb doesn't need to be bent when using the nub.

When I first saw it (and even used it at E3), I was really disappointed with the nub. While I still don't love it or anything, it's grown on me somewhat. Short of putting a full-on analog stick where the d-pad is, I don't know what else they could've done. The face of the system is cramped as it is.

Well I guess I could try readjusting my grip, but I think it might have been better if Sony had reversed the d-pad and analogue nub. If the system is so focused on 3D games and analogue is the primary control type for 3D, then why not make the nub the main control?

Hey, I agree with you. I was just making a suggestion based upon the current situation.

Simple, replace it with a Gamecube C-stick, like this guy:

Personally, I think the dead-zone on the PSP is awful. It's fine for direction, but terrible for judging any sort of movement subtlety. No sneaking on this stick! You can get around this on driving games by rolling it around the edge, but I'm still not happy with the analogue nub.

How easy is it to control the actual car in Ridge Racer with the analong nob?

Very easy.

It's not as if you could expect steering wheel quality here, but the nub actually works great for RR.

Since you can do really well in Ridge Racer w/ the D-Pad, the suckiness of the analog nub barely matters in that game. Pressing All Left or All Right will get you through most spots.

It's in a thumb-cramping location and is slippery and imprecise as all f-ck. It's better than the DS' analogue touch screen idea, but not by much, imho.
