This year I finished both RE4R and Rage, and for me these games are at the same level of greatness. Why the dislike towards Rage?

Usually I have seen people say that Rage is a bad game. If you have played it - why do you dislike it?

Even at the very beginning of the game, where you enter the game world, stepping out of that bunker it graphically looked so far ahead of 360 hardware. Gameplay is very satisfying and pretty simple, as there would be nothing else to add, because it doesn't need it.

Rage had technical problems when it launched. It struggled if you turned around too fast. Also it suffered a significant reviewer backlash for not being Fallout 4 or exactly like Fallout 4. Myself I enjoyed it but I've never finished it as I felt it got boring and repetitive too quickly.

Rage was impressive. 60fps on PS360 was already rare. 60fps with open world sections was insanely rare.

I think the issue people had was the world traversal being segregated as it was, instead of being seamless.

When playing Rage I was thinking it's like Fallout 4 but more simpler, which was the best thing for me

I played it years ago, but I remember it being a mediocre experience. The open world was boring and empty, the settlements were okay but there wasn't much to do other than talk to one NPC or another, the missions in closed environments were better because of the shooting, but overall I remember it ending up feeling repetitive and that from halfway through the game I finished it on "automatic mode," without paying much attention.

Rage is id Soft.

Are you id fan, get their combat system?

If yes, its superlative. If not, you will just see problems in it.

I was absolutely hooked to it.

RE4R is just great game all around. Everyone can appreciate it.

Same way when you're high on drugs I'm afraid. I'm used to follow the same logic for decades, for every masterpiece there's 20 more hidden gems like it and usually you'll find qualities that you're asking for missing in that masterpiece but they exist in those hidden gems instead which's also great, the media did a poor job at this phenomena unfortunately.

Same OP who made this thread

I remember enjoying rage.. and then it abruptly ended.

Same OP who made this thread

And this is a problem because?

I loved this game. Who cares what others think.

When this game first revealed, I was really into the art direction. The dungeon they showcased during E3 stood out for me, both gameplay-wise and graphically.

Dune-buggy gameplay was pretty fun, too.

Wish I could go more into detail about the game, but it's been a while since I've played it.

I really liked the simpler design. I thought it will be big open world, but wasn't, and playing it more it was the best thing. It was so immersive experience the way they built the world, and I mean the game as such - how the gunplay handled, talking to characters in game, it felt so thought out - I really felt the interest from devs building the game

If You liked Rage You should play Rage 2 , but again the problem is the empty open world. It has great gunfights , it feels like Doom meets Mad Max and the missions are fun, specially the ones involving cars.

The DLC is good , I got very chesp they collectors edition but the talking mask melted after a year.

The art...when I first saw the game world it was so impressive and it's on 360, like add modern effects and it could maybe even look like a PS5 game. I think it was so on purpose from the devs to make Rage much, much more simpler and focused, than Fallout 4

Replaying RE4R right now for the third time. I'm loving it even more.

RAGE was a patchwork of good ideas and great assets thrown together in a mediocre way, combat included. Great feeling weapons and fancy enemies animations on the top of a mostly dull and unbalanced encounter design.

The animation and hit reactions were really cool, classic id shotgun too. I should check out the dlc, it's been sitting in my library for 14 years now.

People mostly answered, but Rage was not in a good shape at launch. Gunplay, character, and gun models were great. But everything else was bland, including encounters.

Rage also had a lot of hype around Mega Textures™ ahead of it's release, and no lay person knew exactly what it was because it was a terrible name. The assumption was the whatever it was, would make the game look great. The game did look very good, but when you call something Mega Textures™, the expectation is...mega.

Apart from the really great enemy hit reactions, I really did not like the feel of the gunplay. The game felt really stiff to play. I thought it was going to be like a marriage of Doom and MotorStorm but got neither. It also didn't help that despite having the Blu-ray capacity for Carmack's megatextures, the amount of RAM in the consoles ended up kneecapping the visuals. There would be some true beauty in there if it wasn't low res soup masked by detail textures.

I don't remember complaints about the world, but that ending man...whoooo boy. Def up there with worst of all time.

Replaying levels backwards in placement of new original levels wasn't the best choice either.

The gunplay still feels great though. Wingsticks never stop being fun to use. Character animations and enemy hit reactions are still pretty top notch too.

And that Scorchers DLC is well worth it. Sucks it was never originally included.

Rage was a 60 FPS game on consoles, which was rare. They also had cool tech where the game would switch to 30 FPS when the game could not hold 60, to avoid tear lines. However, the vehicle sections were terrible, too predictable. Later into the campaign you should roll your eyes when you are harrassed by the same low thread enemies. Another problem was that due to the texture virtualization tech, the game had to be static, since dynamic objects would only have a simple blob shadow, whereas the world's shadows were statically baked. That made the world feel static and lifeless - pretty though.

I really enjoyed it. Especially it ran 60 fps on Xbox 360 which at the time was really impressive. Mega textures I remember that buzz lol.

When it launched Rage used technology that not many PCs were ready to display. I remember in my Radeon HD4850 at times it ran at 60 fps and sometimes at 10-15 fps. Later patches and better hardware improve the experience.

This ^ I'd pay $30-$40 for a proper remaster out of nostalgia . ..this came around an exciting time for gaming for me.

RE4 is one of the best games ever and Rage could very well be the worst game id has ever produced: laughable "open world", average mission design and one of the most abrupt endings in videogames, almost feeling like they got tired mid-production and just shipped it as it was.

Rage had performance issues at launch and i remember it being VERY short. Like, "where is the rest of the game, ia this a demo?" short. I loved the world and gunplay.
I played Rage on 360 and remember virtually nothing about it. But I do remember a review that took a lot of points off for the abrupt ending which said, "Imagine if Star Wars made it up to the scene where Obi Wan Kenobi shuts off the Death Star tractor beam and then BOOM, end credits fanfare."
