SYDNEY — Johnny Depp's wife, Amber Heard, has been charged with illegally bringing the couple's dogs to Australia — an incident that captured global attention after the nation's agriculture minister angrily ordered the pooches to get out of the country or face death.

Heard was charged this week with two counts of illegally importing Pistol and Boo into Australia and one count of producing a false document, the Commonwealth Department of Public Prosecutions said on Thursday.

The importation charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of 102,000 Australian dollars ($75,000). The false document charge, which relates to information on an incoming passenger card, carries a penalty of up to one year in prison and a fine of AU$10,200.

All this seems too severe. Get a life, Australia, and stop pestering beautiful celebrities.

Let's get real. She won't see any jail time.

They're idiots for thinking they're above the law though.

Have respect for a foreign country's laws when you visit.

if australia doesn't jail her they get laughed at and derided for not punishing a celebrity

if australia does all the celeb fans go apeshit over australia complaining how they're being unfair and shit

damned if you do damned if you don't

Australia has strict quarantine regulations to prevent diseases such as rabies from spreading to its shores. Bringing pets into the country involves applying for a permit and quarantine on arrival of at least 10 days.
sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Go through legal channels next time

I was being sarcastic, but wasn't he put in Club Fed? It's basically summer camp compared to most prisons in the US

No, Federal prisons are generally worse. They have the 85% rule, and inmates can be relocated without warning. Plus, general conditions of food and rec can be varied and poor, along with poorer medical care.

The one he was held in (FCI McKean) isn't of the "Club Fed" variety that I know of, but it is medium security.

Anyways, falsifying documents is a big deal...a fine and a year sound reasonable. It doesn't matter who you are, that kind of thing is not permissible.

They should send her to prison for a year or two, a fine won't hurt her or Depp.
Fuck celebrities who think they're above the law, she didn't bring the dogs into the country accidentally or because she didn't know about the law, she falsified a document.

I agree, but I also think even for non-celebs it should be 2 years max. 10 years is insane.

I believe they do, but it's an adjacent camp. As far as I recall he was at the actual medium-security correctional Institute, which they count separately. Here's the details on their website

It looks like they list the FCI and camp as it's own thing, despite the minimum security camp being a technical part of the facility as well.

Probably shouldn't have falsified documents.

And this?

In an interview last month, the 29-year-old actress said she and Depp planned to avoid Australia as much as possible in the future "thanks to certain politicians there."

"I don't know, I guess everyone tries to go for their 15 minutes, including some government officials," she told Australia's Channel 7.

Cut the passive aggressive shit.

Cut the passive aggressive shit.

Prison should not be an option for retribution against falsifying documents to bring two dogs into a country. It shouldn't even be an option for non-violent crimes, period. And we are far from this here.

I don't know if you've seen the videos of politicians discussing the issue, but it totally looks like tough bravado in the face of celebrities just for the sake of attention.

Prison time for this seems ridiculous to me tbh but I also think the fine should be bigger as 75k is like 1/4th the cost of a car for them as punishment for falsifying documents and skipping over quarantine. But as it stands, just stick them with the 75k fine

A fine should be a % of their income, say 20%. That way at least the wealthy ca still be hit in the pocket (a little anyway). Falsifying documents, if this is what happened is a big deal, regardless of who you are.

By all means, fine the shit out of these idiots, Australia.

Haha good luck getting them back. No way USA sends them back.

Unfortunately, her little escapade could not have come at a worse time. Americo-Australianian relations are at an all-time low. As I'm sure you remember, in the late 1980s the US experienced a short-lived infatuation with Australian culture. For some bizarre reason, the Aussies thought this would be a permanent thing. Of course, it wasn't.

they are pissedd people stopped giving a shit about crocodile dundee?

Jail time is an extreme and unnecessary form of punishment.

However, I do think the fine should be larger, or a long-term ban from entering Australia as a result will suffice.

Respect the rules, regulations and laws of the place you are visiting, or don't go there. Simple. As. That.

you would think a crime that can get you 10 years would come with a lot bigger fine than $75,000. of course all fines should be a percentage of your income.
