American Idol Season 9 Thread of Simon's Swan Song (?)

You could tell that Lilly was very bitter, and had no belief that she was in jeopardy this week. She even calls the viewers out on it too. "A lot of really great talent is going home this week, and I don't know what America is looking for here..."

Rightfully so.

Is X-Factor using thickheaded American Votes too?

God America.. why are you so stupid.

Toddrick - Correct he sucked
Kaitlyn - She was okay.. but Paige has been consistenltly MEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Aaron - I guess he was bad but man not Tim Urban or little country boy with spikey hair bad..
Lilly - WHAT THE FUCK. The other girl knew she shoulda been gone.. wtf..

So mad.. so so mad..

God damnit.

Crystal + Lee in top 2 is my guess.

Also lol @ Crystal. She has like 0 emotion and always knows shes gonna get in.. then when others get to the stools shes like "Yea whatever.. sit down".. but man when Lilly got kicked off.. you saw her face instantly hit sadness.. You can tell they were close friends cuz of their oddness guitar stuff.

Glad Katie made it.
Revenge of judges stupid comments.
It goes to show that America doesn't always buy what TBTB want to pimp.

What happened to Lilly is that some of the girls that were on the out improved last night.
While she, apparently too confident that she'd be safe, gave a largely forgettable performance of a largely forgettable song.
She wasn't bad, but she didn't get anyone to care espeically given that so many voters also assumed she'd be safe anyway.

Not only that but she just realized: oh shit, retarded people are the ones voting on this thing and i might actually be fucked...

Tim, Crystal, and Mike are still here.

It is most shocking that someone in the pimp spot went out. Not counting finales, that's like the second or third time that has ever happened.

What the hell are Katie and Aaron even going to sing during Rolling Stones week?

I guess I'll only look forward to Siobhan and Crystal now.

Crystal and Mike were quite good on the last performance shows.
Lilly, on her performance night, did not inspire anything except indifference; that was her problem.
Even a momentary train wreck (like Paige) can get people to vote more furiously for their faves.
More people go out for having an OK night than having either a terrible or a great one.

A contestant being good does not negate their level of pimpage. See Lambert, Adam. I think if people just heard judges' comments, the results would largely be the same.

And yes, it's been shown over the years that it is better to have a trainwreck than be average. It's still weird since there has only been one pimp spot performance that deserved it so far (Mike)

I guess Paige got through on Syesha's phantom voting block.

Siobahn will probably be out midway through. She's this year's Allison, where Simon will go out of his way to criticize anything other than her actual singing.

heh, Lilly's gone and I ain't sad. I am surprised, however, that she was eliminated this early. I thought she was going to make it to the semifinals or something.

Oh well, I'm kinda happy :P. Still rooting for Dewyze/Lynche/Bowersoxxx

So pissed off about tonight's results.

LILLY was my favorite contestant and was arguably the second most talented girl next to Crystal. Katie on the other hand sucked wastewater.

I may be done with this season.

I've never seen "When a Man loves a woman" song being picked in this show. I don't understand, that song sounds like money for those who could sing it.

None of the people eliminated deserved to go yet. Katelyn and Todrick had the most potential of the four (most charisma and raw vocal ability) but their performances were uneven. Lily and Alex performed OK but didn't have as much talent (lily one trick pony and alex looking scared and robotic).

This season is disappointing so far. I don't see anyone who could even dream of cracking the top 3 or 4 of last season. Where it the musicianship, stage presence, or vocal ability of a lambert, allen or iraheta? At this point allison (4th place last season) would just absolutely crush the current field on her way to victory.

Someone needs to step up. Siobhan has the potential to do so with a lot of the "IT" factor and suprisingly awesome vocal talent (by far the best pure vocalist remaining). Crystal is good at what she does but what happens when we take the guitar away and add in theme nights...might get ugly quick. Didi...maybe something there but needs to show she isn't a quirky one trick pony. Mike...solid performer but looks to already be at his ceiling which is far from spectacular (in all areas).

This happens every year though. Someone that had no shot of winning goes much earlier than he/she should have. It stinks if you like the person, because you would like to see a few more performances, but in the end does it really matter?

If it wasn't this week, it was gonna be another week where she picks some offbeat song and doesn't nail it.

Why would you take Crystal's guitar away? She'll just play her guitar 100% of the time, like Kris Allen did.

I expected nothing less from the idiots who allowed Adam Lambert to make it to the final two.

Yes they should have voted the one with arguably the most vocal talent in Idol's history off early.

Its not arguable. By any overall technical measure he destroys everyone who has done Idol. Arguably he can sing better than almost anyone in the last 50yrs of popular music. People might not like his tone or his antics (code for gayness) or the way he presents the music (more code for gayness but other subjective factors enter as well). Jaws drop when he sings...other people just can not do what he does.

But listen to current chart topping music...its littered with people who can't sing any better than you or I do. Basically you set up a background/"vibe" for yourself that is overly emo and angsty and then sing like your heart is being ripped out of your chest as you sing and you win. Or you overly produce it and add in layers of unfathomably popular auto-tune while creating a very specific public image of yourself. In that sense Lambert doesn't match at all. He can do that (check out his impressive acoustical stuff) but seems to frequently prefer over the top performances that are not currently in fashion...especially in men (and gay men being even more out there).

Alex's face when he was eliminated was just heartbreaking. It looked like he wasn't going to be able to get through his song. I also still can't believe Tim Urban is still around. He's the worst person there by far. I wonder how that big-haired guy who was disqualified would have sounded.

Bad singers outlast mediocre singers and mediocre singers outlast reasonably decent singers.

This is going to be one long ass season. -_- Not a single person on this show is what I would consider "amazing"

Hey everyone, just jumping into this thread for the first time. Siobhan's actually one of my close friends, so this is really awesome watching her get so far. She's had a really tough life, so she really needs this. She's an absolutely amazing person, easily one of the coolest and nicest people I've ever met. Please vote for her! Going over the thread you guys already seem to like her, so that's good.

^^ I'll vote on talent. Others may vote on personality. but it's singing competition first.

Who am i kidding. i'm voting for Tim Urban

Kris played piano, guitar and went without either. At this point Crystal doesn't appear to match his talent as an overall singer/musician.

Won't prefer her to anyone else based on the fact that she 'needs it' but like her personality, stage presence and singing ability so far. :D

Haha I don't feel bad asking because she certainly can back that up with talent. The girl can sing.

Well, I think I might be done with this season. Alex's performance last week was the best of the season. He was the main reason I was watching. No one has a voice like his in this show. Lilly was definitely top 3 in the girls. Pretty disappointing. Go Didi!

According to Access Hollywood, Siobhan Magnus will sing “Paint it Black”.

Will list others as they are rumored/confirmed.

One thing that always makes me nuts is "disparagement by Karaoke" - as in "yo dawg, that sounded like a Karaoke performance dawg."

They're completely losing track of the idea that what America wants to see is a regular person, who maybe DID only do Karaoke, and isn't a former child-actor, or professional band singer. Someone who hid their light under a bushel and is an undiscovered talent.

It's fucked. They're eventually going to do casting instead of auditions.

Yes, a person who only did karaoke but is a zillion times BETTER than most of the people out there doing karaoke. After all, they're competing for a $1 million record deal. They're looking for a person who sounds flawless on pop (Jordin, Kelly); a person with a great voice and an incredible interpreter of lyrics (Kris, David C.); a person with a unique, soulful edge (Fantasia); a huge, sensationally powerful voice (Carrie). All these people won and are LEAGUES ahead of every single contestant in this year's season. Even the people who didn't come in 1st or 2nd but got signed anyway (Elliott Yamin, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Tamyra Gray, etc.) completely annihilate this season's crop talent-wise.

In any other season, only 2 or 3 people from this season would have been considered good enough to even make the top 24. This season has definitely been a karaoke contest. And so far, a karaoke contestant hasn't received a recording contract (and if they did, they were dropped).

I think you get my point though. It's annoying that they are more and more focused on professionals who already have a foot in the door.

And I agree with you - this season sucks talent-wise.

I definitely hate plants and people who are otherwise considered professionals. It really takes away from the idea (and appeal) of the show's entire concept.

Aside from Bowersox and and maybe Garcia I think this is by far the weakest Top 12 the show has ever had. Many of these chumps wouldn't have even made the Top 24 in most previous seasons.

Bowersox should win but my prediction is Big Mike has it locked.

Kris only didn't play guitar like once, and that was because they weren't allowed to in the first week.

Why would you take away her guitar is the question, not "is Kris Allen better." What would that prove, and why would you do that?

Answer: You wouldn't. She's a guitar player. That doesn't make even a little bit of sense. Saying, "she sucks without her guitar" is like saying, "Eddie Van Halen is a crappy musician because he's not good at french horn."

There's no reason she would ever show up on stage without playing guitar.

Because they still are holding on to the claim that its a singing competition?

Heck, kelly clarkson probably doesn't win because some dude from her season hides behind a piano and goes emo for every performance ;).

Christ, Kesha is going to be on the results show this week.

It's a pretty bad top 12, but I think season three is still the worst:

La Toya London
Amy Adams
Matthew Rogers
Camile Velasco
Jon Peter Lewis
Fantasia Barrino
George Huff
Jennifer Hudson
John Stevens
Leah LaBelle
Jasmine Trias
Diana DeGarmo

I know Hudson is now a huge deal. But she was very unpolished on her AI season. Crazy eyes and bad song selections.

I still think this is initially worse than 3. A lot of people have the potential to do well, but I don't expect them to.

song spoilers:

Michael Lynche – “Miss You”
Didi Benami – “Play with fire
Casey James – “It’s All Over Now”
Lacey Brown – “Ruby Tuesday”
Andrew Garcia – “Gimme Shelter”
Katie Stevens – “Wild Horses”
Tim Urban – “Under My Thumb”
Siobhan Magnus – “Paint it Black”
Lee Dewyze – “Beast of Burden”
Paige Miles – “Honky Tonk Woman”
Aaron Kelly – “Angie”
Crystal Bowersox – You Don’t Always Get What You Want”

I still am surprised that Lacey, Aaron, Tim, and Katie are still here. This is gonna be a long season.

Umm...Taylor Hicks' season? Fantasia, LaToya, and Hudson alone make that list better than your average season.

Eliot Yamin, Chris Daughtry, Katherine McPhee were all decent that year, although I personally didn't much care for McPhee.

Okay fine, then the year Jordin Sparks won.

No one can disagree that this was the worst one.
Jordin herself was pretty good, and Blake Lewis was definetely entertaining the whole way through. Melinda was the feel-good contestant that year. That wasn't a bad season, just nobody particularly relevant came of it.

Obviously, we aren't getting a Leona Lewis out of this year or anything. Relevance isn't really what the show is about. I fully contend the show's purpose for existence is itself, not albums by the winner. The only real interest in getting winners successful is probably making people continue to watch the show.

So far not overly impressed by anyone.. Didi and Casey have been the best...

Andrew was okay but it was kinda plain. The girl from Amarillo (Name forgot) - She isnt too bad.. but her voice was all over it felt like though I know thats her style.

Katy Stevens next.. Train wreck incoming.

EDIT: Simon owning Kara's "I need to feel the song" comment with "What do you want him to do ? Bring a tank on stage?" :lol :lol :lol
