We want to be one of the top leagues in the world in the next decade but we're not going to attempt to spend any money and were gonna shit all over our workers because we can.

Last season I went to the Quakes-Sounders game that was the soft opening for the Niners new stadium, and half the fans were just there to check out the stadium. Before even halftime some frat jock types sitting behind me were solving all the problems... so what if they'd never watched a full game before, what the team needs is a guy like Marshawn Lynch! I'm sure they're working on a sequel to Inverting the Pyramid by now...

As someone who by your own admission wasn't even following MLS at this time last year surely you know much more about running a professional soccer league than Don Garber, I mean what has MLS done under his watch... (wait that sarcasm doesn't work because you really don't know!)

It's not, but like others here you don't have to let a lack of reading comprehension keep you from believing it is, to fit whatever narrative you're going for...

“At the end of the day, we want to be one of the top soccer leagues in the world. And we want to try to achieve that by 2022,” Garber said. “We want to the league of choice, the league of choice for players, for sponsors, for fans.”

What goal should they set? "We just hope to still be in business!" Do people not understand what "goals" are? It's not like if they don't meet it there will be repercussions. "Well we failed, shows over folks, time to disband MLS!"

Maybe they should try and set a realistic goal?????? It's nice to dream big I guess, but when you don't have a solid plan to meet that goal then it's just empty words.

I would say they have set the proper goal for themselves in terms of being a "league of choice" for players / fans / sponsors, depending on the definition of "one of"... what does that mean, top half-dozen, dozen?

It sure seems like certain people believe that if you set an ambitious goal and don't reach it, that's a failure...

From the most pro-NASL / anti-MLS site out there...

NASL could suffer greatly due to MLS and its new CBA deal

The new MLS Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) appears to be a big victory for MLS players and for the league’s management. With four new expansion clubs having paid large fees to join the league and a new TV deal along with several new lucrative sponsorships, Major League Soccer is poised to emerge as one of the global powerhouses in the sport.

The ultimate loser in the MLS CBA agreement is likely to be the ambitious North American Soccer League (NASL), which has tried to make a case at various times in recent years that it can be a concurrent first division thanks to its free market model that includes outright free agency.

Major League Soccer now emerges into its 20th year as a clear American success story. Player wages will increase, freedom of movement will now be allowed in certain circumstances and television exposure will be higher than ever across the globe. From scratch in an industry fraught with risk, owners have in twenty years built an institution that will last for decades to come. MLS isn’t perfect but it took a big step forward Wednesday night.

The NASL has countered that they have a free market approach as opposed to a system that resembles socialism that characterizes MLS’ single entity structure. However, single entity has worked and now MLS is emerging a powerful and strong force in the global football market. NASL on the other hand will face enormous challenges thanks to this CBA.

The newly agreed upon CBA takes the minimum MLS player salaries away from the levels where NASL teams can poach guys from MLS clubs. This almost completely undercuts NASL’s ability to compete for mid and lower level MLS players. The new CBA also ensures that players in MLS can move within the league after a certain period of time. NASL clubs have benefited directly from signing veteran MLS players with mid-level salaries, whose rights were held by a club they did not want to play for. Tampa Bay Rowdies Goalkeeper Matt Pickens and New York Cosmos defender Hunter Freeman are examples of this. While Tampa Bay, New York and also Minnesota can continue to compete with MLS clubs for players, this CBA probably prices the rest of NASL out of competing for legitimate first division players.

NASL has had a hard time convincing many prospective owners of joining the league thanks to rival-league USL’s affiliate agreement with MLS. While I believe NASL has the stronger case to be a sole Division 2 league in the U.S, the writing is on the wall that the USSF is likely to allow USL and its MLS reserve teams to attain the same status as NASL’s highest-level professional teams that draw upwards of 10,000 a game. USL will probably continue to attract new owners and investment thanks to MLS’ interest, leaving NASL virtually alone on an island.

The weakness of some NASL owners and clubs is also a drawback. MLS’ single-entity structure does not allow for organizations to be so non-competitive financially that they drag the entire league down. While critics will point to Chivas USA, that was an exceptional circumstance. NASL’s freewheeling, market based approach has allowed some high-level professional organizations like the Tampa Bay Rowdies and New York Cosmos, who operate on a level close to MLS in terms of staff competence and structure, to share the same league as teams like the Atlanta Silverbacks and Fort Lauderdale Strikers, who are in real terms, not even completely professional clubs.

With NASL’s growing disparity, it highlights the potential for teams to fail in the very near future dragging the entire league down. This is countered by MLS, where a rising tide lifts all boats and where the new agreement between players and management probably ends the NASL’s dream of truly competing with MLS. When you factor in the USL situation and the ability of MLS and USL to collude in order to essentially control the pro soccer pyramid in the United States, it becomes obvious the NASL is getting close to a point of being completely boxed in – that is unless NASL finally accepts its role as a league that attempts to bring an advanced and innovative competition to fans who are not in MLS markets. NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson is a smart and savvy survivor of the sports business. I would hope he will look at the MLS and its CBA and realize, a time to pivot has come and that the league in order to survive will need to find a niche which accepts MLS’ overall supremacy in the U.S Soccer Pyramid.

No way it's that bad, yes we're missing Henry but we've made a few good acquisitions for our attack. Plus I believe in Robles.

2-1 NY

1-0 Orlando (Kaka is going to have more of an effect on the game than Villa)
But that defense. I'm not worried about the offense in terms of firepower, but I think without Henry we will be a lot more predictable.

After making a number of moves and with a full preseason now complete, Marsch is no longer anywhere near as “concerned” about that talent or depth of the position. He has even appeared to confidently settle on a starting tandem for this Saturday’s opener at Sporting Kansas City.

“I think that Damien Perrinelle has done very well. He’s a very smart centerback and he’s a very good compliment to the way that Ronald (Zubar) plays,” Marsch recently told SBI when asked about the position. “We’re asking a lot of our centerbacks both from a tactical perspective and from a physical perspective and I think that those two have worked really well together.”

We're soooo fucked.

Fox Sports names Alexi Lalas and John Strong as lead Major League Soccer broadcast team. Landon Donovan joining studio team.

Monotone Donovan best Donovan.

You can cut it out with the condescending attitude and insults. My point was that it still screams of a lofty goal considering the owners seem to afraid to do much of anything, that's all. I understand why they don't.

I am completely aware of what MLS has done thank you very much. No need to be an ass about it.

MLS and Eurosport announce four-year partnership to broadcast games in Europe
Major League Soccer and Eurosport today announced a four-year agreement for Eurosport to air MLS matches in all of Eurosport's European territories (except the United Kingdom).

The four-year deal includes exclusive TV and digital rights for all regular-season matches, the AT&T MLS All-Star Game, MLS playoff matches and MLS Cup. Games will be broadcast on both Eurosport and Eurosport 2 and made available through the Eurosport Player, Eurosport’s online subscription service.

"It is a pleasure to be able to announce our support for the long-term vision of MLS," Eurosport Group GEO Peter Hutton said. "We see the recent signings of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard as further proof of the willingness of the league and its owners to invest in globally recognized names. This can only help us grow MLS internationally, where we will look to show the league both live and in prime time to reach the maximum possible European audience. As we continue to improve the quality of Eurosport across the region, the new deal with the MLS is a significant step to increase our live football content as well as a sign of our belief in the potential of the league to continue to grow."

The deal complements the recently announced agreement between MLS and Sky Sports to air games in the United Kingdom. Up to four matches will be shown live each weekend on a combination of Eurosport and Eurosport 2, including one match live at 11 pm Central European Time on Sunday night and one immediately following. A 30-minute matchday preview will be broadcast on Eurosport 2 each Friday in access primetime.

The Red Bulls have signed 2015 third-round pick Shawn McLaws and Canadian international Karl Ouimette, pending approval of Ouimette's P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate. New York has also completed the transfer of Cameroonian striker Anatole Abang from Rainbow FC, pending approval of ITC.

Per league rules, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

"We're excited about adding three quality young players to our team," said Red Bulls sporting director Ali Curtis. "All three have done well in preseason, and we think they can add depth and value to our roster if they continue to develop and take strides forward."

New York selected McLaws 59th overall in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft out of Coastal Carolina University. The Edmond, Oklahoma native played four seasons at CCU, ending his collegiate career with a 73-18-3 record, three Big South regular season titles and two tournament championships.

As a senior, the defender played in 21 of the Chanticleers' 23 games, leading his squad to a 16-6-1 record, tied for most wins in the nation. Last month, he was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in his career. McLaws also received Soccer America All-American third team honors. His 89 matches played are second-most in program history, and his 84 starts rank third.

Ouimette was signed by the Montreal Impact in 2012 as the organization's first Homegrown player. He made two appearances for Jesse Marsch's Impact team in 2012. The Repentigny, Quebec native has 20 league appearances, including 15 starts and one goal, over the last three seasons.

Ouimette, a defender who has played both center back and left back, earned his seventh and eight caps for the Canadian Men's National Team this January in a friendly series against Iceland.

"I'm pleased by what we've seen from Shawn, Karl and Abang," said Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch. "These three guys entered camp with very different playing backgrounds, but they've all progressed well and earned a spot. We think that they have potential and by keeping them in our environment and around our club they will continue to grow as players and down the line be a part of what we are building here."

Abang, an 18-year-old Cameroonian striker, joins New York from Rainbow FC. The 6'1" forward made appearances for the Cameroonian Under-17 team in 2012, and is currently in the U-20 player pool.

Ouimette seemed decent from what I saw last season.

You were drunk weren't you?

Last year they had a 95% chance of making the playoffs going into mid-August. This year I think their roster is a lot deeper and instead of collapsing they'll actually get better as the season goes on.
It's not just the DPs, aside from Robbie Findley (someone had to replace Oduro as the fast guy who can't score) I like all their moves... European vets Cheyrou and Perquis, Delgado and Zavaleta from Chivas, homegrowns like Chapman and Hamilton... Osorio, Lovitz, and Hagglund will be more developed, Bright Dike could be healthy for the first time in years, and Alex Bono has the upside to be one of the best goalkeepers in the league.

DC aren't going to drop that much either this year.

Neither's NYRB, no way in hell are we dropping below NYCFC. We won't do as well as last year, but no way we do that bad.

It's just my opinion, and I didn't put all that much thought into it. Having said that, I'll stick by those predictions for DC and NYRB. I think DC is one of the weakest teams in the east along with Montreal. I think NYRB will be in that 4-6 range with NYC and Orlando. That's the problem with predicting standings, every team has to have a number when really it would make more sense to put them in tiers. 4-6 lower playoff tier sounds a lot better than sixth place.

I know we will regress somewhat. Every other team seemed to improve on paper. I don't we'll be that bad though.

It's not just that other teams have improved while DC stood pat (aside from Halsti), DC is actually worse. EJ's medical issues have him out indefinitely plus Espindola suspended for the first six matches... that's 18% of the regular season!
Last year Montreal was buried by their seventh game, I think something like that is possible.

I don't see how we'll do better than 7th. Anyone realize how much work Robles will have to do with that backline?

Yeah the rest of NYRB's team isn't bad but that defense is frightening. However I can see them adding a DP or two in the summer and squeaking into the playoffs.

Pulisic just drew a penalty but is staying down. Hopefully this isn't as bad as it looks.

Limped off so hopefully that means it's not too bad. I'd imagine we would take him off to be safe. Josh Perez finished his first half HT.

Meh I think EJ was pretty awful last year. Espindola missed more than six games last year. I'm more worried about Silva not being healthy at the start of the season.

How does RSL have 4?

I brought that up in this thread a few weeks ago because the math makes no sense to me. They have 4 yet their owner claims they have 3 and can buy one of the contracts down to make it 2 so they can add another DP... which would give them 5?

^ both Kaka and Doody huh...

This is the one I came up with.

VIlla-Altidore-Agudelo is a deadly forward group for sure... I'm a big fan of Shipp and Serna (had both last year) but I think both will see less minutes this season. I don't know exactly how Chicago will line up but they have Accam, Kennedy, Maloney, Shipp, Amarikwa, Magee (once he's back)... And Colorado has a real logjam with Sarvas, Powers, Pittinari, Sanchez, Ramirez, Serna, LaBrocca, Cronin, Alvarez, Hairston, Watts...

Edit: Soccer America's Projected opening day lineups has Shipp starting but not Serna. No idea how accurate that is...

Too many Timbers to succeed.
Haaaah. Of all the Timbers I picked, I feel the most confident about those three. A super solid defender, one of the best players on the ball/facilitators in the league and someone with one of the highest goals scored per minutes played averages in the league. Those guys will be juuuuuuust fine.
