USL PRO, a 24-team professional soccer league that works as an avenue of player development for Major League Soccer, recently granted the Vipers a franchise to locate in the Rio Grande Valley. Since September, the Vipers have been in discussions with MLSs Houston Dynamo to own and operate a USL PRO franchise in which the Dynamo will control soccer operations.
MLS clubs own and operate eight of the USL PROs teams. Twelve other MLS teams are affiliated with USL PRO clubs. Dynamo President Chris Canetti said the Dynamo are not looking to own and operate a franchise.
We have been approved a franchise in the Rio Grande Valley, Vipers president Bert Garcia said. Its a relief, but the clock starts ticking. Through that approval is pending a soccer-specific stadium through the standards the USL PRO wants us to do business.
Vipers majority owner Alonzo Cantu, who will own the USL PRO club as well, said he has bought land for a new soccer stadium and the Vipers have been working on conceptual plans. The stadium will seat at least 5,000, per USL PRO standard. Cantu offered no other specifics other than the new stadium will be located close to the Vipers new basketball arena (Expressway 281 and Alberta Road in Edinburg), also set to open in 2016, and that he is hoping to do another co-venture with the city of Edinburg.
