With PS5 essentially becoming a Hybrid console/handheld now thanks to Portal what Handheld orientated games would you like to see on the platform?

Oh, ok. Being able to play PS Plus games without having a console is a legitimate benefit, for an admittedly small use case.

I'm wondering what the benefits for PS5 owners are though? I know it can be used as a controller. Does it have back buttons? If so I could seriously see myself purchasing this over an Edge. Despite the screen I think it might actually have better battery life lmao.

In my opinion PS5 is incomplete without Portal .

Yes it is and I enjoyed my time with my Portal but honestly I found myself only using it when my wife and I went to bed and she would read and I wanted to game a little

I much more enjoy remote play using my IPad Pro with a dual sense connected to it

I can understand that.

In my experience, as I don't own a TV, I was exclusively playing remote play on my Macbook for months, and then Chiaki on my Steam Deck, but somehow the Portal ended up being my favourite device to play games on.

You can't pick your TV up & just walk around freely playing games ( Even though I actually have a portable monitor that I could walk around with & use my HDMI transmitter or just use a tablet to remote Play)
So then what benefit do you derive from the Portal?

Please don't tell me you said 2006 because of the 3 games the PS3 could stream on the PSP and PS Vita
It was over 30 titles, but whatever.
It's still something that's not exactly new and the PS4 expanded that.
It's not some magical futuristic technology that people seem to make it out to be.

Its a remote play device fuck my life LOL, if it was a separate system then fair enough, the copium to try and make this thing sound decent is funny

It's one device & I can just pick it up & go . Even if you're in the room with a TV Portal is a more focus & immersive way of playing because everything is all together in your hands.

You wouldn't ask someone why they have headphones when they have speakers at home.

A lot of them have actually found their way to the PS5/Portal already but I'm sure some of your favorites haven't or you would like a updated version or new entry.

Edit: Examples

Bro what are you saying? 😅 it's not even the slightest close to xbox's portability

lol alright dude. I thought you may have been acting in good faith in this thread until "The Portal is actually better than playing on a TV"

Who even needs a hybrid console when a phone strapped to a controller is the worlds greatest gaming experience?

Lol

Maybe you're lost but Portal is selling pretty good on its own merits people seem to like it.

The portal is definitely a better buy compared to the edge.

Also :
- No, no back buttons
- the screen for an LCD is actually preeetty good 👍
- battery life, with the vibration setting set to the lowest one, LEDs also set to the lowest one and with the screen brightness at half can reach - in my experience - up to 6 hours.
- benefits being the fact that you can actually play all your PS5 library without having to pair and repair your joypad from the PS5 to your tablet/phone each and every time, being able to have haptics (not supported on Android) and not draining your phone's or tablet's battery like a mfker..
😉

I didn't say it was better it's different & if the headphones vs speakers example didn't reach you that's not my problem.

Thanks for the breakdown. Makes me bummed I bought an Edge. Assuming Portal works as a controller with PC.

Plus you could probably find a way to use it as a second monitor? Damn.

On the positive side I guess the Edge has the back buttons and is a lot more manageable but I probably would've gone with the Portal just for the in-bed gaming experience.

You said it was "a more focus & immersive way of playing" compared to playing it on the TV in front of you, which certainly seems to indicate that you thought it was better.

I know, I was exited about the feature before realising how limited it was (none of my games was compatible) on the PS3. I was of course miles ahead on the PS4. Used it with my PS TV, and my Xperia phones (as the remote play app was exclusive for Xperia phones for ages before becoming available for everybody).

But after trying all these for 15 years, the Portal is the best way to enjoy Remote play for me, so I understand his point.

You asked what was the benefit now you're mad at the answer lol

Because the answer is dishonest. Playing on a little screen in your hands, with increased latency, is not better than playing on a large TV.

Are you actually claiming that you prefer playing on the Portal to playing with a home entertainment center?

Dishonest is claiming someone said something that they didn't even after they tell you that's not what they said.

They are different experiences sometimes you will want to play on TV & sometimes you will rather grab the Portal.

Do you go around trying to explain to people that a TV is better than watching content on their phones & tablets?

This stuff isn't even hard to understand but the topic is about the games.

Portal is nowhere near a handheld experience. It's a controller with a screen. Most ugly thing PlayStation ever produced next to PS5 itself.

PS Portal is a clear example that what is said in forums and what happens in the real world have little to do with each other. The forums are filled with nothing but complaints about the system, but the truth is that it has sold very well.

I don't have to, because obviously watching something on a TV is better than watching something on a phone.

Unless you watch exclusively vertical content I don't see how this is even in question.

Do you think people will run to the TV every time they want to watch something over just enjoying it on their phone or tablet wherever they are?

Is there really much difference in undocking your switch & picking up your portal?

Well the Switch being the same hardware immediately shows what was playing on the TV and keeps working even when you carry it out of your house, even if you walk under a metal roof.

Once I connected my PS5's via ethernet the Portal has been solid. When using it with either of my PS5's connected via wifi it was an unstable experience. If the system started downloading anything at all with the PS5 connected to wifi the image quality would plummet and the portal would often disconnect.

I have a solid wifi 7 mesh network, which is the fastest standard PS5 Pro supports. I know it isn't my home network because my consoles are connected via ethernet to the mesh satellites in the rooms with them and that works great for Portal. It seems to me that PS5 wifi adapter can't very well handle remote play plus pretty much anything else at the same time.

I'll say that the problem didn't seem to be as bad on Pro as it is on base PS5, but image quality if the Pro started downloading a game update would still take a hit, even though disconnects weren't as big of an issue. Makes sense because Pro supports wifi 7 and my base PS5 is wifi 6.

I also can't reliably use Portal for remote play from outside of my home network via a hotspot, but that's most likely due to my ISP. Where I live I have to use a cable connection and while I get 800 Mbps down, upload speeds are capped at 50 Mbps. I usually top out at half of that. So remote play from outside is shaky at best. I know it's my connection because it's the same with Xbox remote play for me. I can connect and sometimes it's good, but other times it just isn't usable depending on what's happening on my home network.
