Just updated my HTC Evo 4G and I have a re-designed Android App Store. How long has this been around? Looks snappy.

Mine updated the other day, then it promptly went back to the previous version a few hours later. The new one is sort of ICSish, with sideways slide screens.

Google Nav uses data and GPS. However, you can download 10 mile wide squares of the map to your phone, so data isn't necessary for travel within those areas.

The only drawback is that it does not download the places and businesses. Only the streets for navigation purposes. I wish you could download businesses and stuff even if it would take a much larger amount of space, tomtom style, at least gas stations, landmarks and restaurants or whatever few categories of travel related stuff.

I have the original Droid. I've had it for almost 2 years. I love it dearly, but I've noticed it's a lot slower than when I first bought it. Sometimes (a lot of times) when I press the Home "button" it'll be a loooong time before the icons on the homescreen show up. Youtube app runs really slow and force closes a lot. Sometimes my Browser internet app does the same. My phone isn't rooted or anything, but I'm curious if there's a way to clear this up. Like defrag or something haha.

Also, what the FUCK happened to Facebook? It used to work fine, but now its garbage. Slower than balls, constant force closures, etc. Is there a way to rollback or root it to download an old version of FB app?

Is there anything outside a factory default reset to restore/boost my performance? Would a reset even restore it to its former glory?

Is there any way to hide a folder of pictures/videos in Gallery but still be accessible through say, a file manager?

ie, for porn or significant other related media

What's your version of the OS? It works for me on 4.0.2 but I don't have the Instapaper subscription to test it out. Perhaps it only works on 3.0 and above?

I'm on SGSII International 2.3.6 with samsung's rom and rooted. Maybe it's only 3+, as you say. Bummer. Will send a mail to developer.

I think I'm gonna start a Wordfeud tournament thread for phoneos war soldiers(or anyone that wants in), respective to android/ios/wp7 users to join since wordfeud is about to launch on wp7 soon.

I want to put up a small nominal prize, that I'll personally put up and will gladly accept funds for, anybody interested?

i haven't tried wordfeud but heard lots of good things so would be up for it. you should start a thread once you have the details

hello moto

I fucking despise motoblur with a fucking passion. I will never buy another android phone from motorola because of it. They will figure out a way to ruin ics (which is looking like it already.)

Inferior audio quality, Gingerbread, and lower-PPI PenTile screen than Tuna. I'm still trying to figure out what makes the Note better, other than if you prefer the larger screen. Some people find 5" to be the sweet spot, I guess.

Since Infinity Blade and Rage aren't available for Android, the GPU means fuck-all for actually using the phone.

I can understand your dislike of custom skins over vanilla Android, but those screens show anything BUT them ruining ICS. In fact, it looks so close to vanilla ICS that I would wager the official release is a waaaaaaays off. The home screen is the same, and everything. Looks like they have barely even changed anything. Apparently even the camera app is nearly the exact same as stock.

I tried out a racing game on my phone and liked it, so I went to download it to my tablet (Transformer Prime) but the market says that it isn't compatible. I thought all gingerbread apps worked on tablets?

Needing some advice: So im ditching my Blackberry for a new phone. Im debating whether to go with Iphone or an LG Optimus 2X but Im not sure. Also this will be my first phone with a data plan. Basically I want a phone that will last me for a few years, will run smooth and well, has a great browser for surfing and messaging, with a decent music and movie player and a nice camera. Also, a great assortment of apps and games with decent support.

Watching some comparison reviews online seems to suggest that the Optimus is alot better in those regards. But the App Store for Apple seems to be better.

Also, it seems to be alot easier to buy apps and games from the App store using Itunes cards, but I havent seen anything comparable with the Android marketplace.

Please note Im located in Canada.

edit: Im not to keen on installing CFW on my phone. Had enough of that with the PSP. :(

My desktop PC wins benchmarks. However, I use my desktop PC for gaming.

If I wanted to use my phone for gaming, I would have gotten an iPhone 4S. The 4S has PowerVR SGX 543MP2, no Android phone can touch that GPU. If GPU is the be-all and end-all for your phone, you shouldn't even have an Android device.

Well, I wont necessarily use a phone for gaming. With my 3DS and soon to own a Vita, Im covered. But, what about social and lifestyle apps? How does Android fare compared to Apple?

edit: Please note, Im a total noob to smartphones, so I apologize in advance about my ignorance.

Android gaming is pretty behind iOS, but non-gaming apps are about on par.

My Tuna is guaranteed an official upgrade straight from Google to Android 5.0 whenever that comes out, probably at the end of this year if Google intends to keep up their new yearly cadence. Will the GSII and Note devices get it? Does Samsung give a fuck?

No LOL, of course not. Galaxy S isn't even going to get ICS!

What about browsing? I was watching a comparison video of the LG Optimus 2X and Iphone4S and the LG loaded websites alot quicker.

Also, how do you find music and video players on the LG Optimus versus an Iphone?

I also have a friend with an HTC android phone who tells me that Android apps are 90% versus the same apps on Itunes.

Music, video, and browsing arent going to be your deciding factors. They are pretty similar. Both OS's function perfectly well. Stock works well for each, but more options are available on each app store.

So, what would be the benefits of owning an Android device over an Iphone?

App wise, I think android has the better browsers. I also think that the larger screen sizes on android superphones lend to a better browsing experience. As far as music players go, it's a wash, they're both great.

The hardware, being able to customize things the way you like them, google apps are much better on android. At the end of the day though, the phones do 95% the same thing, it's really mostly down to personal preference.

You'll want to use the Google Music player though if you are going to use the (FREE!!) cloud or the music store. The Google Music player is ok but pretty barebones compared to iTunes.

I don't know what kind of videos you are going to watch on your phone but the stock iPhone and Android video players are pretty similar, they basically support .mp4 container with H.264 video and AAC/MP3 audio and not much else besides. For most other video formats and containers you'll be relying on 3rd party player apps.

In general, unless it's games or tablet-specific apps, you won't find an app on iOS that isn't also available on Android these days.

So, what would be the benefits of owning an Android device over an Iphone?

This really comes down to a question of philosophy. Both Android and iOS are good but in different ways. It's the classic argument of open platform vs. walled garden. Really everyone and their mother has Android and iOS devices at this point, just play with your friends' devices and see what you like better.

So I decided to root my Samsung GS2 E4GT (Sprint) and I'm in the process of downloading this following ROM (Calkulin's E4GT v2.8.1). Near the bottom in the instructions it states:

Important Notes - Due to how this ROM is setup, a wipe is recommended BEFORE flashing if coming from another ROM(use FORMAT ALL attached)

You must have a custom recovery to flash this ROM

If your are updating, then nothing extra is needed during flashing as the update script wipes what is needed, unless other wise stated in the change log

Be sure to do a backup before flashing and read the change log

Now, I don't have any previous ROM, unless a stock phone is considered as coming from a previous ROM. Do I still/Should I still wipe my phone before proceeding?

Second thing. what does it mean that I need to have a custom recovery to flash said ROM?

Also for reference, I followed this guide completely to root my phone.
