Oh boy. I have a Thanksgiving battle with my soon to be Samsung Galaxy Nexus and my brothers Iphone 4s (constantly gloating this phone). Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the Iphone for what it is and does but I've already invested in Android and sticking with it.
I know I'll have him beat with the display and LTE. Here's hoping the software and camera is up to par. He'll try and give me a run for my money with Siri no doubt but I'll download speaktoit to keep that lost to a minimum. Any other ideas I should show case?

Widgets? iOS only has stocks and weather...pretty barebones compared to Android.

Another alternative is to just not give a damn what your brother thinks. Smartphones are pretty amazing across the board when you think about what they can do compared to phones five years ago, so just enjoy them despite their minute differences and leave the chest thumping to the manufacturers.

Verizon just sent me an email saying I'm eligible to upgrade now. I just got my Thunderbolt on a 1 year contract in March. I'm happy.

Ooo... Isnt the battery life on the TB horrifying? Do you have a phone in mind that you are going to upgrade to?

I don't know you guys. But my battery life has really improved after a few recharges on my Galaxy S2.

PS: Words with friends kills the battery on Galaxy S2 :(

For example I have gotten about 85% left on my battery after a whole day of very light use (a few calls here and there) and one game for about 10 minutes max.

Went to go play with both the amaze and gs2. The thinness and weight of the gs2 is unreal when you realize what's under the hood. I wasn't too impressed with the amaze. Very heavy and what's with the raised glass? Does the gs2 have a glass display?

Make it look super sexy with custom launchers and widgets which the iPhone has none of, check out the Android Customization thread to see whats possible and get some inspiration. Mycolorscreen.com is also amazing to see what kind of customization is possible.

I would say root and flash a custom rom like MIUI but I highly doubt any of that will be an option in time for Thanksgiving.

Battery life is actually impressively good (and I even owned an iPhone 4 for 8 months) on the current ROM I'm using (which is supposedly just the latest leak from HTC of 2.3.4 for the TB). I do use WiFi a lot to accomplish that though.

I have 2 plans for my next phone. One is, buy the 4S, get it unlocked from Verizon when I can (if that news article was true about them unlocking), selling that and buying the Prime. Or, just simply wait for the Prime.

I have a feeling an unlocked 4S would sell for a good price which is why I'm considering it; also I can't argue with being able to try a new phone for a while. I'm still committed to Android for now though, big reason because of screen size...plus I just like messing around with it. Either route I take, I will have a Nexus Prime.

Would this be the best place (on GAF) to ask?

I have an HTC Desire HD with Telus and I'm going down to the States next week. Do I just turn off Roaming to avoid all the data use charges? Will I still be able to send/receive texts?

texting (sms, not something like google voice) are running over the same band as voice, and aren't considered 'data', so you should be fine, but no email or anything will work with roaming off. You might contact a parity carrier (not sure if telus/your phone is cdma/hspa) and get a sim card if you're not here for too long.

Coperdickus, what's the best Android comic reader these days?
I don't read comics so I'm not too sure, but Marty seems to have tried most all of them from what I remember.

Thinking about getting some type of Android device soon and I was wondering if there was an ipod touch-like device I could get? My "work" doesn't really allow camera phones or cameras in general so I'm thinking of a way to get around that and get something to mess with while I'm in here doing nothing.

Not sure of any devices without cameras other than the Nook Color. You'll have to do a bit of 'hacking' to get the full android experience but it isn't difficult at all and you can buy refurbished NC's for $150. Plus the size is perfect for reading and watching netflix. Not huge like a zoom and not small like a phone.

Coperdickus, can I sideload books into the Android version of Kindle?
I don't think so.....at least not the way it ships....I don't know for sure though.

Edit......oh books....I have no idea.

You can just copy the books into the kindle folder. It think it only supports mobi files though.

I use FBReader for the books I get from Project Gutenberg. It's a lot more customisable.

Will the Kindle Fire have the Android marketplace? If no, anyone know if I'll be able to install it? Amazon's Appstore isn't available in my country.

EDIT: In second thought, I should've posted in the Fire's announce thread.

If i had to guess I'd say no, the fire is going to exist in a walled garden much like the ipad, and amazon will force you to use their store. That being said, I don't see the fire being available in a country where the amazon appstore isnt; is the fire already out in your country but not the appstore?

Can't you just manually install stuff on the fire, though?

My guess would be you can't manually install stuff. You can only install from amazon market place.

Unless someone roots the device.

I live in Mexico, pretty close to the border. I order from Amazon regularly and pick it up.

The books and browser is good enough, but having apps is win.

BTW, very impressed with a $6.50 extended life battery I got from Amazon for my EVO. 3500 ma. Lasts through the day pretty easily.

Any recommendation for a car mount? There are a lot of mounts for my EVO 3d, but I don't think any will fit with the case on. Is there any that would take a variety of sizes and will still accommodate the camera in the back?
