I have a friend looking for a new phone. She currently has a Sony dumb phone, and she was looking at getting a Sony Experia J as her first smartphone. Is this a decent budget phone? It just recently got updated to jelly bean so that's something good for a budget phone. She really likes the feel and wants to stick with Sony (she's a Sony fangirl), but she can't afford an expensive phone (she's buying it outright for prepaid).

Here is her current carrier's prepaid phone selection. Is there anything massively better for the same price point (or less)?

Auto-correct and word prediction seems to be inferior compared to iOS and WP and the Italian and German dictionaries are a joke. And I'm not switching, because I don't have the money for a new unsubsidized phone right now.

No I meant why not switch keyboard. Kii Keyboard is free and has many features (dictionaries and prediction are so-so, but it's what I use), and even has a completely stock theme. Switfkey has amazing auto correct and word prediction, but is a bit pricey I guess, but it has a free trial for a week.

So I helped my Mom buy and setup an iPad mini last night. They were on sale at Wally World for only $299, and she finally decided she wanted a tablet.

Man I wish the Nexus 7 refresh could be like this. The aspect ratio, screen size, and industrial design is all $$$ as far as I am concerned.

How does one switch to Hangouts in so little time? I don't know anyone who uses it yet, I guess it's going to be hard for Hangouts to push Whatsapp out of the way over here.

I don't regularly text with that many people, and the people I do chat with were pretty easily swayed.

I'm in many Whatsapp group conversations and Whatsapp seems to be the app that everyone has now a days. I guess it's too soon to change.

I'm wondering though how Hangouts is so much better than Whatsapp that it's worth changing. What are the key differences and improvements?

Mother in law currently needs a new phone...only will go with Verizon, coming from a Droid Incredible 2. Assuming that Verizon announces the HTC One today, should I tell her to get that or the S4? She's pretty tech illiterate if that sways one way or the other...

I can use it on my desktop and tablet. Not just my phone. Thankfully, I was able to get the people to who I regularly talk to switch.

I actually like the iphone unlike some of these other heathens but I find it too difficult to go back to that screen after seeing the bigger ones, especially when it comes to browsing the web. I hope when Apple does get around to a bigger screen they go with 4.3 or 4.5. Bigger but small enough that with reduced bezel it won't really be a big device.
