Android users, stock or custom?

N4 is my first Android device and I see no reason to change a thing. Stock is really nice. I prefer it to the S3 that I've played around with. Let a pair of iPhone users play around with it over the holidays and they were both impressed.

I love the stock OS, but I'm generally too lazy to root it and I just don't care enough so I use whatever Samsung has. Unless I get a Motorola phone, then I root that thing to holy hell.

Custom ROM (Cyanogenmod)

The later builds are usually as stable as stock and provide more features that are useful like notification toggles. Plus, backing up via Titanium Backup/Rom Toolbox or a NANDroid backup is a godsend.

As of yesterday night I switched to CM10.1 (Android 4.2.1) and hopefully I can use it as a daily driver. If not, I'm going back to CM10 (Android 4.1.2) because I know that was stable.

Then your best bet is to not get a Motorola phone, because those things can be hell to root.

Rooted my Desire because I really dislike sense. However I haven't rooted my Xperia T because I really like Sony's version, and really it's not too dissimilar to stock anyway.

Stock is king though.

Miui Rom. That rom is amazing.

MIUI has probably the best theming engine of all the ROMs I've tried. Plus, the menu interface and overall systems interaction with LBE security built in is fantastic. I couldn't stick with it because it was still stuck on 4.1. I might try it again when they update. Not even bothered by the iPhone-esque homescreen implementation as I can always use a custom launcher to get my app drawer back.

I would love to get a custom rom, since I'm stuck with Android 2.2, but since the model of my phone is a Droid X (actually the mexican version, which is worse, since we didn't get the update to 2.3) it is a pain in the ass to change it, so I'm stuck with stock.

Now running Custom on my Evo 4G Shift after a year of lollygagging about it. That phone was put on EOL by HTC themselves and is the only phone on sprint not getting at least an ICS stock update. I'm still not quite sure I have the hang of it, there's not a lot of roms for this phone that come highly recommended so it's a crapshoot on if the ROM will make the phone better off or worse than the laggy 2.3.

Still though, being able to tinker is a lot of fun and having ICS features on the phone is really nice.

As far as I know, D2 and Dx can use the same ROM (unless things have changed since last I checked - most devs made ROMs for the DX first and D2 secondary). When I donated my phone, I installed it with Liberty (but there's apparently a stable version of cm 9 on it now).

Anyway, Liberty 3 and using Launcher Pro on it made that experience tolerable. Was much smoother than it ever was provided you didn't bog it down with apps. I even created a hub system for her so she didn't have to swipe left or right to get to different homescreens. She just had a menu interface that said "email - books - videos - shopping" that would take her directly to related page and it ran like a champ. I repeated this theme for all her home screens so it just looked like the screen was insta-refreshing with new apps instead of scrolling to a different page.

My mom got a lot of good use out of it until it started getting unreliable lately and we replaced it with a Droid Razr Maxx HD.

I had CM but the thing would freeze up so often... had to constantly do a battery pull.

got worried that one day it would crash in the middle of the night and my alarm wouldn't go off so I installed a stock rom

Custom (Cyanogen) because I don't like HTC Sense.

I plan to get a Nexus 4 next because my touch screen is messed up, and I'm probably sticking with stock there. I might root down the road, if there is any need to, but I don't think I'll go further than that.

I have touchwiz on mine Galaxy s3. I really don't mind it minus some UI stuff. Stock android is a bit more sleek to me. I tried CM10 for a while but I started to miss some of the stuff that TW had. If I had the choice I'd probably use a stock rom. Maybe I'll try out Nova Launcher.
