Angry Video Game Nerd

AVGN Tenth anniversary episode (of their youtube account being created) comes out on Wednesday.

James said:
I’m putting the final touches on the latest Angry Video Game Nerd episode. I’ve been working on it non-stop for the past month. It unexpectedly broke the record for the most time-consuming episode I ever made. I never saw that coming. Previously the record was held by R.O.B. (2011).

It will be ready in time for the 10 year anniversary of the YouTube channel, which was created on April 6, 2006. The first episode made-for-the-internet was Karate Kid, uploaded on April 8, 2006.

The U-Force is an interesting piece of technology from the 1980's, it's still not exactly accurate but it works better than the PowerGlove. It's like one of the ancestors to Kinect.

Though they actually did get the Power Glove working pretty well. I had the Power Glove when I was a kid, and it wouldn't work worth a shit for me.

watching them play Gauntlet together is so painful.

Mega Man X7 is absolute garbage. Not sure how I beat it back in the day.

Some of the games in the video are actually good though, like Legends (he's right about the awkward controls though) and Soccer.

Just picked up Mega Man Anniversary Collection for PS2 the other day. Not sure if this video covers it, but thought I'll mention it ;)

Oh hell yes, someone finally talks about the awful DOS game.

So what exactly is covered? I see (DOS, PS1, PS2). I'd imagine X7 gets talked about. X6 is probably my least favorite on the grounds it completely screwed up a formula that worked (didn't help Inafune didn't have any part of the games after X5, wish that was covered.

...oh, just the DOS game, Legends, & X7? Feels like weird timing he talks about Legends when Legends 2 JUST came out on PSN.

Edit: omg that new set up looks great.

He got rid of his old Sony Trinitron CRT for a rectangle, nooooooo!

*starts watching episode*

He went all out on the special effects in this episode. Kind of interesting that the further he goes back, the newer the games become.

I don't know why, but the part when he reacts to
Volnutt finding the dirty magazines in the PS1 version of Legends
gave me a good laugh.

I wonder if
Mega Man Soccer
is actually the next episode, or if he was just joking.

That was a nice anniversary kind of episode.

Part of me still wants to give X7 a play. It looks awful, but that's what makes me strangely curious about it.

I'm disappointed to see Legends shit talked cause it's legit one of the best games ever, but most old school Megaman fans despise it so I'm not surprised.

Really enjoyed the rest of the video.

That was a fun ep. I can't rip for shitting on MML, the first game does play like shit.

Anyway, I'll never not be surprised by how little the nerd has improved in terms of filmmaking skills and production quality in ten years lol.

This is one of those episodes where you can tell James had a lot of fun shooting it. People say that AVGN is tired, and maybe it is, but I just see it as an excuse for him to make silly short movies.

I think James is in his element the most when he gets to show off as a director. He did a pretty good job with the classic Nerd footage being spliced together with new footage. Though it is a bit funny watching skinny Nintendo Nerd James from 10+ years morph into current AVGN James. He put a lot more time into this episode than he did a for some of the previous ones.

Amazing episode, I really liked it. And it actually had a better premise than the AVGN film, with an older and tired AVGN travelling through time. I think his movie would be better if he used this story instead of what we got. Anyway, thanks so much for all the videos, Nerd, you are amazing.

Oh, I really liked the part that Mega Man is checking some dirty magazines and the AVGN porn remix theme starts playing hahaha

I rented Mega Man Soccer and remember it being really fun

I remember enjoying quite a bit as well when I rented it.

Controls didn't seem any worse than Super Dodge Ball/NES World Cup.

Remember it came out before International Superstar Soccer from Konami or the first FIFA game from EA.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
"Oh man... I'm retro." Hard to believe.
Hell, the PS2 is reaching "retro" at this point. Fuck I feel old.

Can't believe it's been ten years!

What makes me feel old is that back in high school I use to think games like Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger were old. They were 2D, on cartridges, and from the 16-bit era. During this time Resident Evil 4 came out and people were telling me how those games had just as big of an impact back then as that game currently was having. I thought to myself that 11 years ago was a really long time and wondered what it must have been like being around when those games were first released. Today it's been 11 years since Resident Evil 4 was released. And at times in these message boards I occasionally see the younger posters talk about Resident Evil 4 the same way people used to talk about Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger way back when.

Now imagine being me, reading comments like this, and realizing I wasn't even in High School anymore when the PS2 came to market in 2001.

It's all relative.

I wasn't in high school when the PS1 came out.

Now someone say they weren't in high school when SNES came out, make me feel young and alive

This is one of his best videos, kinda scary to think that he has been around for over ten years. I was still a teenager when he made his Dr Jekyll video, which makes me feel incredibly old.

I like the BvS reference making fun of a minor plot point during the Nightmare on Elm Street segment.

I really enjoyed this episode, both the commentary and the skits. I think it's the best one he's released in a pretty long time.

Depending on when it was released in 2006 I was either in 8th or 9th grade.

Crazy, AVGN was my first YouTube subscription and I've been watching since the 2006.

I was 25 in 2006... I think I am around the same age as James and Mike. They both seem to be born around 1980-81-ish. But yeah, The ANN was my first Youtube subscription too. James pretty much won me over with his TMNT review for the NES. "You can just walk over it.." That was my experience with the game when I was like 10...

This can be good if he doesn't rely too much on "I mean, I really don't want to play this game" to start every review and "shit sucking monkeysquirrel dongass mother****" or whatever for the ending. That part with the jumps on the TMNT one and the wooden stake on Simon's Quest were awesome.

I stand by this, all this time later. I still get stoked when there's a new episode and I'm bummed that I never got anything past volume 5 of the DVDs, but they never seem to be in stock. Also holy cow I was 28 then.

Count me in with those the same age as James or older and have been watching from the beginning. I loved that that he was able to capture the experience of renting a NES game for the weekend, having a shitty frustrating time with it, and being stuck with it all weekend. It's very cathartic to see him scream about the issues that really upset me as a kid. Like the impossible stair climb in Ghostbusters, or wasting my childhood in Milon's Secret Castle trying to figure out what to do, or how Ninja Gaiden sent you back to 6-1 when you died at the final boss.

I've said it before that I wished he had been more into the N64 and PS1 as a teenager. Those videos would have been great too and would have given him a lot more material. He was the perfect age for it.
