Angry Video Game Nerd

This episode probably just seems crappy because of how unbelievably funny the last one was. He did get knocked up against a pretty rad Secret of Evermore poster, though. There was also a pretty awesome Castlevania 3 poster. I'd love to have just about all the crap in that room actually.

Have to disagree - AVGN is funnier when he lets the game speak for itself. The fight scenes really ruined this one. Thumbs down from me as well.

I bought the Gameboy game as a kid, and I hated it. For those saying there's not enough review... there's nothing to review. It's the same shit 5 times over. It may not be the worse game out there, but I can tell you I regret buying that game. His complaints are valid, and what little of the game there is is repeated 50 times over, just bigger levels and more boring shit. It's easily the worse game in my Gameboy collection.

Just watched the bugs bunny one. Horrible. Not funny. Not entertaining. So, AVGN, if the games don't have enough material then don't review them as a whole episode, or just don't review them at all. The man's gotta balance his in-game/out-of-game ratio a little better.

Then don't review it at all, or make it a 5 minute portion not a 20 minute episode. If the material is weak, the episode will follow. AVGN should know that by now.

Except that a lot of people actually like his 'antics' episodes.

His first Bugs Bunny review was among his most popular. And that's why he did this one as a follow-up. He's even talked about how a lot of people don't like episodes like this one. He realizes that some people like the more straight-forward ones and some people like the zanier ones. He's been mixing it up pretty well, I think.

There you go. Somebody understands.

AVGN isn't really suppose to be about reviews. The "reviews" themselves are just a disguise for him to stretch his creativity. The original AVGN videos all started out as a joke. The reviews were suppose to be funny, and not really about making a point. Sure some of them do, but it's more about having fun making these videos than changing someone's views about a game. Normal reviews are suppose to help you make up your mind about a game purchase, this isn't what AVGN's about.

Ugh. Why spend so much time for games and an episode that weren't even worth it? There's no backstory behind those games, they're all the same, there's nothing to say about them, and they're nowhere near being the shittiest games he's reviewed.

I liked the Batman episodes much more because they were full of variety and nerd rage about how poorly designed they were. The Batman Forever part on the SNES was the best.

I have Crazy Castle 2 and really enjoyed it as a kid. I think I beat it after awhile. My brother would watch me as I played it while we worked out what to do. Pretty fun game. It's fun to play it again now and then for nostalgia purposes but it's still playable.

On the video though, I ended up skipping the fight scenes about half-way through because they got old and repetitive. I think they're funny when they are kept to a minimum.

I thought this was one of his best episodes yet. I'm glad he figured out a way to make the B-story Funny instead of like it was in the NES Accessories episode.

Really? I thought it was pretty weak, his best work is when he comments on stupid shit in games. Like the last episode.

Eh, I guess I prefer episodes that focus on the shittiness of the games, his reactions and minimal antics. His earliest episodes were still the better ones to me. like the Top Gun one with him trying to land and refuel. :lol Then the power glove one with him actually landing.

AVGN jumped the shark a loooong time ago. Dont know why people are just realising this now. Last time i truly laughed was B-17 BOMBER.

All these kind of reviewers have a limited shelf life..i mean look at that Yahtzee douche, he got old FAST. The only funny one IMO left is Spoony...and im sure he'll end up like the others too. There's only so many ways you can say how much a game sucks..

AVGN is about some about some nerdy guy playing video games and getting angry.

It isn't sketch comedy/action. The sketches were used to break the scenes, or introduce or end a video. It give the viewer a minute or two of something other than looking at a dubbed video capture.

Who the hell do you think you are telling people what the Angry Video Game Nerd is? Are you James Rolfe? Did you create the character and the format, and write the scripts?

No?

Then you don't know jack.

When someone creates something, whatever it is, and it's intended for people other than the creator to experience, the creator doesn't get to define it entirely. The "users", so to speak, give the creator's work its value. They get to define it as much as the creator, if not more.

Fully agreed. I appreciate James' effort to make episodes where he actually completes games and gives full reviews, while also occasionally just giving us stuff like this. His low-game-content reviews are like a throwback to his earliest work.

In terms of Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle, I almost think James tried too hard to make the episode zany and over-the-top. There was almost too much fighting! That said, I still enjoyed it, but I didn't drop on the floor laughing as much as I did with the Birthday Blowout review, where beating up Bugs was still a fresh concept.

Bad episode, just like all the skit ones. Hoping this drained him a bit so he makes the next one with less poorly executed slapstick and visual scat.

Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but I like the Angry Video Game Nerd for his informative views. His opinions help me in deciding on which games are worth buying for my Nintendo Entertainment System and other assorted gaming consoles from the past.

But if I want entertainment, I'll go to the theater.

Watch it. Someone flamed me earlier for saying the exact same thing and claimed I only said it because I was behind a keyboard.

He was probably a fat ass.

Seriously. I think people are a little spoiled these days in terms of being informed of authorial intent such that they think it's actually relevant. It's interesting, for sure, but creative endeavours are a partnership between creator and viewer. The meaning of any work of art is the sum of the two's experiences, and thus is often different for each person experiencing the work. Work with no variance in opinion is generally so vapid as to be meaningless anyway.

Bah what the hell...there's no pleasing people. When he reviewed "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties" there were enough people complaining that he was focusing too much on the gameplay...which was a steaming pile of came lshit grinded with donkey snot. If it was a little repetitious, I feel he was going for that 80's cartoon vibe with the constant repetition and violence.

Or maybe the guy who played Bugs wanted a bigger role or something...who knows...

Did no one watch the last episode, "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties"?

As someone said the original version was actually a FDS Roger Rabbit game, ported to the US as Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle for the NES. The first game did also have a Game Boy port, which in Japan was "Mickey Mouse" and starred, well, Mickey Mouse. The second game was a Mickey Mouse game as well in Japan.

In Europe, too. At least I have the Mickey Mouse version of CC2 and was quite shocked to see there's a bunny in my game.
Anyways, at least CC2 is fun, I finished it, several times.

Yeah, you're right. Last time I laughed was
this episode at the very end.
.
Seems like such a long time ago.

Besides, I recall the AVGN said he started this as a joke. It's not like he had any vision at all. He did it because he enjoyed it and because people enjoyed it. He wouldn't keep making these if people hated them.

What I think is a shame is that he spent so much time and effort on this episode, yet it's nothing special. It's mostly him fighting Bugs for 10 minutes with 5 minutes of talk about the actual games. He'd been talking about this episode as if it would be something very special. I expected a really shitty/famous game (like Plumbers don't wear Ties or E.T.), but in the end it fell flat if you ask me.

I think James is getting the mix pretty much perfect right now. When he started to do skits he overused them a bit early on, but since then he's had a nice mixture of traditional reviews with some zany ones from time to time.

I don't think this one was all that great but Plumbers was amazing.

Funny how different people like different things. He has more than enough viewers that he'll never please everyone all the time. I actually think for the most part he's swung back to the kind of episodes I like, but if I don't like an episode I'll say so. You can too. That's the joy of the internet.

One line that got me:

"don't cartoons like getting beat up?"
"We do, Doc. But you know what we don't like? Getting SHIT on the FUCKING FACE!"

The delivery was great.

I gave Crazy Castle 2 a new go after maybe 10 years and I still love it. Second time I don't really agree with the nerd (TMNT NES being the first). The music is great, the graphics are ok and the levels are kind of varied. It's a good little game, really.

But that won't stop me from loving the nerd :lol

Also, i'm glad shit doesn't sicken me, i'm eating tea while watching this =P

For a minute there i thought this was gonna be Pitfall for the SNES. Never heard of this NES one. Wow, that sprite really is a bad Mario knock-off. This is pretty old school style AVGN, I like when he plays a game from start to end abridged like that (like in Transformers, Rambo etc).
