Theres also a great face-off with another Marvel character thats a lot of fun, but overall the movie just isnt nearly as exciting or entertaining as some of the other Marvel movies, maybe because it never seems like the stakes are particularly high.
Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy are proofs of concept, in a strange way existing far enough away from the main cinematic storyline that they could easily be abandoned as one-offs if they failed. But in their offbeat success, theyre showing Marvel a new way forward, one in which they lean into the ridiculous and embrace the fun......
Ant-Man may be proof that weve finally outgrown the era in which directors default to the gritty superhero trope. Comic book films have proven themselves as a genre-straddling and often inventive form, so much so that we can comfortably put the fears of Adam West and George Clooney behind us to embrace everything they have to offer even the goofiness.
Comic book movies that are fun. Whod have thought?
That's just the tip of the iceberg. This feels weirder than Guardians, because Guardians was always supposed to be weird. That's an epic space opera with a talking raccoon who shoots a rocket launcher and a dancing tree. This is set on Earth with real people, but you still fall in love with an ant named Antony. Like, actually care about what happens to him, even when he's all but indistinguishable from the millions of other CGI ants around him.
And then the movie goes subatomic. Fans of the Ant-Man comics will already be familiar with the Quantum Realm, but even the most die-hard likely never expected to see it materialize onscreen. (Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige has previously said it pays homage to the Disneyland attraction Adventures Through Inner Space, and boy does it.) It's baffling. Baffling in so much as you're completely invested and having the ride of your life, but you still can't help thinking, "This got so much weirder than I expected."
That Vanity Fair is reveling in it's snarkiness and keeps harping on the fact that Wright COULD have made this, as opposed to simply reviewing the film in it's own right.
Comingsoon's review listed a negative for them that's a positive for me:
Considering a high percentage of Marvel movies are EARTH SHATTERING END OF EVERYTHING stakes, I find smaller stakes refreshing.
Ant-Man has been cloaked in a haze of preordained failure, and I fully expected it to follow Ultron as Marvels second confused disappointment of the year.
I love it when Im wrong.
I keep seeing reviews saying how this is the "riskiest Marvel movie".
Man, NOBODY knew who the Guardians of the Galaxy were before their movie. A tree and a talking raccoon? Sheeeiitttt.

But it was steeped in the fantastic which is what moviegoers want. Marvel sold it as a fun romp through space. Knowledge of the characters doesn't matter. Ant-Man is set on earth and the trailers did a really bad job of showing the audiences why this is different than other superhero films. Reviewers are mentioning how this is a family movie yet none of the trailers make it seem so. Shit, was Scott's daughter even in the trailers?
Hindsight is 20/20. Before GotG came out, people were worried that Rocket & Groot would ruin the movie.Again, Groot and Rocket weren't that risky. The concept of the talking raccoon and tree were novel, yes, but the roles they played were basically the same as Han Solo and Chewie and they knew that worked. Also, Rocket and Groot were 100% certain to be a hit amongst kids.
What weve seen since the beginnings of the Marvel serial in 2008 is an ongoing stretching: bigger casts, grander set-pieces and more intricate interplay between characters, with no clear end in sight. Ant-Man scuttles off in the other direction. Brisk humour, keenly felt dramatic stakes, and invention over scale. You know: small pleasures.
For those who have seen it. Would you say it was better than Avengers 2 or worse?
Not the best start of a RT run ever, but it's a good sign.

Ant-Man is at 79% as of this post.
RT now at 73% :\
Hoping the metacritic jumps up to high 60's but not looking good
It's back at 79% (12 positive, 6 negative).

Saw it last night. I found it to be entertaining, but fleeting. Here's my full review
who developed the science that can make a human transform into an insect.

The only people I saw push the risky narrative were Marvel fans and sites like BAD. Others pointed out that shit like Star Wars exist. No one expected it to make money at first because the first trailers were shit. Then Marvel started marketing it better.
From the review:
Do people turn into insects in this movie or is this line inaccurate?
