I really like that movie for some reason. It's low-key, didn't make much money, but the Vikings aren't portrayed as simple blood-thirsty warriors as in most movies and it's got action-adventure and a bit of mystery thrown in for good measures.

The only thing the movie gets embarassingly wrong is when they try to imply Vikings were illeterate when it was not the case at all. :)

I thought it was good...
but the way he learned how to speak still makes me laugh out loud when I think about it...

How come?

I have lived in Japan for almost two years, now. I study my ass off... and I can't say that I am fluent... :lol

Awesome movie, I had to clue lots of folks in on it... sure the whole learning the language was a bit hokey... but it's just a great atmospheric gritty movie.

becoming fluent in another language just by listening to their fireside conversation in a few hours? WTF?

That's clearly not what happened. If you pay attention you can see that it's over many different nights. Some days it's raining and sometimes it's lighter than others. It's meant to be over their travels that take months, but they don't do a good job of showing this in the movie. It's the same technique Mctiernan used in the Hunt for Red October. Anyways, it's still a piss poor way of showing it.

As for the movie, I love it. I like how they don't fuck around in it and the vikings are all prettydifferent from each other and they are all badasses. It's very similar to Predator in the way it shows the whole group but let's each person shine a little bit. I was also a fan of the book. The soundtrack is also excellent and they even used a piece of it in Kingdom of Heaven.

Piss poor way of showing it and it just wouldn't work that way. But wait a minute.. I'm a huge fan of Hunt for Red October... no one learns English or Russian that way... what we do get is a similar camera show a pull in towards Sean Connery's mouth at which he switches (to the audience) from Russian to English.

I was always under the impression in HRO that we were just being given that so that the audience to could follow the russian side of the movie... not that the russians actually started speaking English from that point forward.

Especially considering they switch back to Russian when the two groups meet and going forward from there only Connery and his 1st speak English IIRC... but it has been awhile.

I wish I was exposed to Japanese for 2 years.

I speak 3 languages and it is my goal to learn Japanese

The guy in 13th Warrior was a scholar though, story teller, poet...
I can let that slide

I saw it when it hit the theaters. Not to be a hater, but I thought it kinda sucked. It wasn't total tripe, just incredibly mediocre and boring.

You are right about the Red October thing. They didn't start talking English. I just meant where he switched from Subtitles to English. I remember lot's of people were confused about that when the 13th warrior came out. They could of done a better job of showing time pass in the 13th warrior but it's there if you really look for it.

Own it and love it. Great fucking movie IMO. Makes me wonder why more movies aren't based around viking lore. Very cool folklore/legends/stories etc... to be had.

Definitely, it made me think the exact same thing. And the mythology is awesome, I would love to watch movies based on it. Good movies that are true to it, not shallow, idiotic interpretations. Like that Thor cartoon. :rolleyes

Perhaps I'd like it more if I saw it now.. but like 2 years ago when I saw it, I didn't really like it that much. It wasn't horrible, but not really good either. I'd give it around a 5/10 or so. Perhaps it needs another viewing. :)

That is one movie BEGGING for a special edition. Mc Tiernan turned in a 99% finished version of the film and the studios didn't like what they saw so they got Michael Crichton to reshoot some of it and basically hack the crap out of it.

Watch the opening of the movie with all the narration. It is obvious that what is covered there used to run a hell of a lot longer. There was also a completely differn't score written for it and what was used of Goldsmiths score was used only in pieces.

It was fucked around so bad that Thomas Crown Affair, which was filmed by McTiernan AFTER 13th Warrior/Eaters of the Dead was, came before it.
