My biggest gripe though is the gun. I quite fancy a wee shoot out now and again, but it’s almost impossible to do without attracting the attention of lots of enemies. So very pointless thus far - maybe I’ll get to use it later?

I beat the game on hard, and I didn't use guns all that much. With isolated groups of about five enemies or so, a little shooting is fine. There were a few times I had the Raiders 'fuck this' response and just shot them because I couldn't be arsed, and partly also because Indy's pistol looks and sounds so good. But in an area with ten adjacent enemies or more, it's risky. I'm glad they didn't do the bullshit stealth thing where every enemy instantly knows where you are the moment you fire a shot, and it's good that staying on the move further throws them off the scent. For 80-90% of the game though I feel the best way to play is via traditional stealth- sneak and get silent kills, and retrieve bodies from open areas.

87% on Meta, teetering on the edge of 90. Let’s be real, though, if this were an MS exclusive, it’d be a 90+ faster than you can say ‘Game Pass!’ Some reviewers just can’t resist sprinkling a little extra stardust on that Xbox charm; this is not exclusive to Sony.
By the way, the Game is Great, this is what really matters ;)

Eh I think it's reviewed fairly. I am loving the game but it's got some flaws, the checkpoint system is pretty schizophrenic, the gunplay is kind of useless, and sometimes objectives or interactions are unclear. It doesn't have the play testing polish of some other big games.

But still I love the game. This is one of those interesting original games that ends up in conversation with GOTY but never quite gets there. Like Deathloop or Control or Psychonauts 2.

I hope it's better than Deathpoop.

Control was GOTY tier though.

I name these games specifically because they didn't have that universal consensus. I happened to enjoy Deathloop a lot but I also very much get that it wasn't for everyone and I think that's probably true of Indy as well.

Not saying it's like Deathloop in any meaningful way beyond that.

I can't keep up with these if/then narratives regarding review scores. The game reviewed great and is pretty dang accurate, imo. I'm 20 hours in and I can definitely agree with any review in the 8 to 9 range.

Must every characteristic of a character, such as their age, appearance, profession or set of skills someone how be important to the plot? Or can a character have characteristics that are incidental, in the sense they don't need to be justified in some way by the story being told?

If a character can have such incidental characteristics, then the question is what is special about deafness such that it can't fall into this category and must always be justified when it appears?
Well historically speaking in terms of films or games that have more engaging plots than others, I would say yes, all of those things should be important in one way or another to the plot.

For instance, I feel like in a puzzle game such as this, his deaf characteristics should have had a little more of a role in the plot than just "Oh he's deaf because he's a war veteran." How is that any different than the Spiderman girl.

As more reviews come in, score average is going up rather than down :pie_thinking:

Even with some small problems, it is easy to say that Indiana Jones and the Big Circle is one of the best games of 2024, even though it has been released too late to participate in big awards.

Game is good. I was expecting crap so I am pleasantly surprised. I also didn't buy it on steam since it's a play anywhere and it's day one game pass title so I wouldn't take the steam current user count too seriously.

The game has numerous good reviews. Very few people would find the game 'crap.' For the majority, it will be a pleasant experience.

It seems like people who don’t mind stealthy games are loving it but it doesn’t do much for those who don’t …

I’m in the second camp, way too passive for my liking.

7/10

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Do we know something about a patch coming? I've heard Frame Gen is broken in this game. Is this true?

Pretty much all modern releases have time frames for patches baked in. Expect something in the next week or so, or maybe they let the team take some time off for holidays then work.

You mean Black deaf girl with half a shaved head that speaks in sign language and paints murals of black lives matter and other political DEI stuff all over the game.

I actually don't think you guys have the ability to see the difference of Sony games that are swamped with pride flags, black lives matter and LGBTQ+ forced messaging vs this.

You are genuinely embarassing yourself dude.

Plus, none of the above actually bothered me in spider man 2. I have said this. I found the Peter parker and Mary Jane power struggle much worse.
Spider-Man 2 is super woke DEI but the people who made it and the people who made this game are in the same cultural milieu which says that “representation matters” so they go out of their way to find places to put deaf people, people with vitiligo, disabled people, even if it looks dumb as hell like the operator in a wheelchair in R6 Siege. It doesn’t matter if the game is made by Sony, or EA, or Microsoft, or it is made in Sweden or North Carolina or California or France, that is the nature of the shitlib behemoth that has swamped game making. A game like Spjderman that takes place in modern NYC simply affords easier insertion of these elements than 1930s Europe or whatever.

About an hour into Giza and can't quite believe this game was made.

Context, a 50 year old dude who's been gaming too long on PC and just about every console.

I don't game that much any more, read books, boardgame but every so often something comes along that really takes me and this is that.

It's my favourite game from the last few years and my only worry is it won't get the numbers and there won't be a sequel or whatnot. Just brilliant fun and utterly absorbing.

Also, a quick aside, I thought all the trailers over the last few years made it look janky and decidedly not good.

Happy to admit I was totally wrong about this game.

Thought everything they showed pre-launch was rather dull and generic.

But after four or so hours i’m loving it. Definitely a little janky with a few questionable decisions but really enjoying the variety of stealth, combat, puzzles and exploration.

A breath of fresh air from most other games i’ve played in recent times.

I've kinda fallen off this one, lads. A good five or six hours in the Vatican and the pacing and the story just aren't grabbing me. Indy feels like he needs something a little more action packed and - yes, I'm going to say it - more like Uncharted. I'll try to get back to it at some point, but there doesn't feel any kind of compulsion to see where the story is going right now.

It's a game about exploration, not action or fighting. I'm glad there are no basic and boring shootouts or a million exploding mummies, car driving etc. The game just doesn't need it. It's a loveletter for Indiana Jones fans who want to solve riddles and find hidden treasures.

It’s all of those things… but it’s also not really paced that well, IMO. I feel like I’m buggering about the Vatican doing lots of stuff with no strong throughline. Ah well. I guess I’ll get back to it eventually.

If you jumped in expecting Uncharted or an action game, you picked the wrong game. This game is a classical adventure, where most of the time you explore stuff slowly and sometimes punch enemies in the face if you prefer not to stealth but the main grabbing point here is level design and just collecting a ton of stuff. It's not exciting, but for immersive sim fans this is pretty decent.

Also as far an Indiana goes, this game is incredibly accurate and a love letter to the movies, from enemy animations to Troy Baker doing an incredible job with the acting. I've laughed so many times like a child watching Indiana Jones for the first time. It's pretty much just like Alien Isolation and I'm afraid just like that game, this game is not going to be very popular due to its core design. They should've made the puzzles more difficult instead of trying to cater to the idiot kids audience that would've never played this game in the first place.
