It can feel alien at first. It takes a little while until you actually feel in control as it twists alarmingly in your hands. There was a period where I thought I'd never shoot like I saw others doing, but now it's almost second nature after a few thousand rounds, although there are still plenty of shooters who are much better than I am at my stage.

To be honest I'm more afraid of my angle grinder (disk grinder) and chainsaw than handguns these days. I use handguns in environments that are controlled, where I don't shoot at steel closer than 10 metres away, where muzzle direction and trigger discipline is tightly controlled in comps, etc. Compare that to power tools, where there are variables that change from job to job, depending on where you're using them. Small grinders are fine, but 9 inch grinders still scare me.

That's interesting. I've worked around some pretty dangerous machinery and tools throughout my life and I'm less afraid/nervous around their use than handguns. But it's a familiarity thing, I think.

I agree about feeling safer using a gun than most power tools. My dad used to announce for timbersport competitions, and a family friend of ours got hit in the leg with a broken chain from the hotsaw (chainsaw powered by a snowmobile engine) that he was using. His leg was black and blue even with a heavy-duty leg pad. Another family friend lost a toe when he slipped while mowing his lawn. I also worked part time in a scene shop, and some of the tools (particularly anything with a spinning blade, such a table saw or radial arm saw) are much more intimidating than any gun I've used. Even my little Dremmel tends to injure me every once in a while when the grinding wheel I'm using randomly explodes into tiny pieces. Granted, most tools aren't going to do much damage compared to a gun. But with a gun, anything that goes wrong is almost always based on human error and not a malfunction. I like having that control.

Speaking of malfunctions, I saw my first squib round last week. Given the price of ammo, reloading is pretty common here, even 9mm. Bang, bang, bang, pop... guy goes to rack it and fire another round. Good thing the RSO pulled him up before he wrecked his barrel.

Later in the night one of his projectiles literally falls out of the case and drops out of the gun as he's making ready. I guess reloading is probably the one area a shooter could do some damage if he doesn't really know what he's doing, although it's not exactly rocket science.

Sounds like the guy either missed a step (powder charge) or was using bad powder. A pistol primer has a surprising amount of energy and could probably create a squib on its own. A bullet just falling out of its casing definitely should not happen though.

I reload shotgun shells, and it's generally safe as long as you follow a good, safe recipe and have the means to measure/verify your powder charge before you start. Shotgun shells are fun since you can fill them with all kinds of stuff. I have a small handloading kit for 9mm as well, but that's a bit more involved and doesn't really save much money. 9mm is cheap in stores here.

Wow. Yeah, bad reloading is really, really dangerous. I used to reload a lot back when I shot a USPSA match pretty much every weekend. It saved a lot of money, and I could make a custom super-soft .45 ACP load for my XD that barely squeaked by the level for the rules, but was really low recoil. People used to joke about watching my rounds fly slowly towards the targets.

9mm has come back to earth and I might just go back to match shooting soon and pick up a G34 and use factory ammo. Now that I have a career I have money to buy it but I lack time, the exact opposite problem I had before!

Hey I just had a thought:

Where does everyone live? Anyone want to have a GAF gunners shoot somewhere?

I'm just outside Louisville. Maybe I could host a BBQ and then I am less than an hour from the Knob Creek Machine Gun shoot, we could all go do that. I think it is in April. Look it up on Youtube if you don't know what it is...

I'm looking to pick up a nice bolt action .308 for around $1k. Any suggestions? I'd like to add it to my current Remington 700 .270 and Winchester Model 70 30.06

How about a CZ...? They are different enough from what you already have, and they make really nice rifles.

A CZ bolt in rimfire (either 17HMR or 22LR) is probably going to be my next firearm purchase.

Thanks for the advice! I'm gonna have to see if I can find one local to take a look at tomorrow. What's the consensus here on DPMS? I really like the look of their 308 rifles too

That is the other reason to reason to reload for sure - heavy projectiles with just enough powder of your choice behind them to make power factor. Even here in Australia there are a number of companies making decent coated bullets of various weights to suit most tastes.

Just got done putting a hundred rounds through my new A17, man that is a fun little rifle. I did have it jam up one me once, probably a fluke though. Consistent placement at 100-150 yards firing quickly. Great for moving targets to, as the recoil is almost nothing. So rabbit and coyote hunting should be a bit more successful for me now, as the old .22 I was using was a heavy pump action SOB with an odd amount of kick.

Sadly, after closer inspection my recently aquired Mauser seems to have a small crack right in front of the bolt, so that's going into a gunsmith to be given a solid once over before I risk blowing it up. And I was really looking forward to shooting it to boot. Phooey.

Got paperwork pending on this bad boy. I might get the One True Suppressor for the Mark 23 one day, but I'd like one that has compatibility with some of my other guns in the mean time.

Hello GunGaf, lately I've been checking in on this thread (making myself jealous over LiamA and hwalker84's HK Mark 23s) and reading up on guns in general. Anyway, first time posting in here and looking to purchase my first gun sometime this year when finances allow, hopefully by spring. (I've shot guns before just never actually owned one.) I haven't settled on anything just yet, but I came across the newly unveiled Walther PPS M2 and am now strongly considering it:

Walther-PPS-M2-Left-Angle-Ext-Mag.jpg

Walther-PPS-M2-Back-Angle-Ext-Mag.jpg

The pistol has been redesigned and now looks somewhat similar to the PPQ, the M2 switches to a push button mag-release (non ambidextrous) supposedly sports an improved trigger, and looks much more ergonomic than the original PPS. Should be hitting the streets soon, looking forward to seeing some reviews and impressions.

Are you particularly looking for a compact gun? I have a PPQ M2 5 Inch 9 and a PPQ M2 45. Love them.

Looks pretty sweet. The PPS already has a great striker fire trigger so I'm interested in trying out the M2. Seriously love mine. Shoots like a gun twice its size. Goes well with a Comp-Tac IWB holster. :D

I had my eye on the PPQ M2 as well but yeah I was kind of figuring on something more compact, and a 9mm for the time being. I will probably get a PPQ M2 eventually whether I end up getting the PPS M2 or not. I've heard nothing but good things about the PPQ, especially in regards to the trigger and the grip, and I'm anxious to see if the PPS M2 gets the same kind of praise.

Nice! I always liked the principle of the PPS, unfortunately I've never had the opportunity to get my hands on one. I did read that the magazines won't interchange between the original and the M2, so that may be something for you to consider if you were thinking of picking up the M2.

Despite all the political bullshit that's ongoing the ATF removed the police sign off on NFA items. I highly suggest buying supressors/silencers, best investment I've made towards shooting. It's like I've taken crazy pills, people blame non existent machine gun crime and suddenly make it easy to buy actual machine guns.

Hello gungaf.

fairly new gun owner here... about a month old of my new glock 9mm.

been at the range for three weeks in a row practicing accuracy and grip, finally got my grip down.

sure gets addicting to goto the range abd practice, wish ammo was cheaper lol.

I have my eye on a SIg Sauer p220. I have spent most of my life, since fairly young, with revolvers... so this thing will be an interesting change.

I am thinking about picking one up, and going through the standard classes and then tactical classes. There are a few places around these parts that have an assortment of really nice training programs.

I guess with this, I will need to move into a bigger gun safe.. I might want to get something that I can bolt to the ground or that cannot be moved. I will also need to look into a decent portable safe. I have a 4 button, hand gun safe, but I need to shop around.

Also, are suppressors class 3 or are they now just another accessory? What is the wait time for a suppressor usually?

Welcome.

No doubt ammo cost is crazy. You should have seen it a few years ago. Even worse. Guns themselves are actually cheap when you factor in how much ammo costs are if you practice and enjoy them.

Which Glock 9mm did you get?

Great gun...love that Glock 19. Good choice if you decide to become a concealed carrier at some point.

Good for you practicing a lot. You should think about participating in some shooting sports, like USPSA, IDPA, or Glock matches!

Hot damn...I posted that pic via my phone...didn't realize it was as big as it was till I just saw it on my desktop PC, lol...my bad for posting such a large high res pic.

I do want to become a LTC (in Texas it's now called License to Carry...they dropped the CHL, since we adopted open carry) one day soon. I'm really interested in the classroom learning and then getting some better range experience.

I also have been looking at competitive shooting tournaments...would love to get involved in that.

The next gun I want to get is the Smith and Wessen M&P 9

109251_01_lg.jpg

Then after that, I'd love to get an M4 carbine...but I feel like its impractical for range practice with the cost in ammo.

That MP9 though feels so amazing in my hands when I pick it up at the range store...they have them on displace tied to a wire...so fun to go handle each gun and get an immediate feel for them.

This is an example of their displays:

I've shot an M&P 9 both for fun and in USPSA matches. It is my wife's match gun, but we have swapped a few times when she felt like shooting single stack (1911) division instead of production. It's an absolutely great gun.

I know what you mean about ammo cost and rifles. I just got my first modern rifle, an AK-47 about a month ago. I paid like $235 for a case (1000 rds) of 7.62x39 to go with it. You can do OK buying online if you shop around a little. I used SGAmmo.com and they have a pretty good reputation.

Hickock45's youtube channel is must viewing.

This week in Guns is an outstanding podcast that will bring you up to speed on all the current events in the firearms world. One of the regulars is a gun rights attorney, so you get a really solid view of those issues from an expert.

After that I would say it depends what you are into...?

The High Road and The Firing Line are good general gun forums. AK files and ar15.com are good forums in general and particularly great if you are into those platforms. GlockTalk is the forum for Glock fans, but there are sections for everything.

Forgotten Weapons is an awesome youtube channel if you are into old guns or the history of guns. I have spent a lot of hours going through his stuff. He gives good history lessons along with looking at how the guns worked and disassembling them.

Thanks for the replies. I will be looking into these.

I was looking into the p220 since it has a double action first pull. I feel as this would make me much more comfortable coming from primarily double action revolver experience.

I plan to pick one up and a set of snap caps. My idea is to just get a good bit of hand time, since it is such a change mechanically from my hammerless revolver. Then, go ahead and schedule real training classes before I even place a loaded magazine. I want to exercise as much saftey as possible and get as much education on this system as possible.

I grew up hunting birds and squirels with my compound bow since a pre teen. I had plenty of exposure to revolvers, but they are such static systems in comparison. I did have some exposure to semi autos during my teens, but it was uneducated.

I would still like to also get a used compound bow, to get a little back into that, since my brother still goes bow fishing every now and then.

Sig Legion is incredible. Noticeably lighter than the normal 226. Way better ergo's because of the grip's and minor tweaks. The tolerance is much better than the normal 226. Sights far superior to the Tacops.

Shot the DAO and DA/SA. Both have insane triggers.

Hey guys, I just got my first SIG today(P320 Full), really glad to have it and looking forward to taking it to the range this week. Just one question, is it normal for it to be very, very heavily lubricated? I did a quick inspection when picking it up, and a quick takedown after getting home and I have to say, SIG lubricates the hell out of their guns. Even on the initial inspection there was a bit all over the slide.

Maybe I'm not remembering it right, but my FNX .45 didn't have nearly as much lube on it. Should I clean some off or just let it be?

Thanks guys.

Planning on getting my first gun this year. Family has some hunting tradition so this has kinda been on the to-do list for 10 years or so. My grandfather has hunted moose for 50+ years. Anyway I finally have means to purchase one and time on my hands so I'm putting things in motion.

Some background: I live in Finland and the gun laws are a bit stricter than in the US for example. Kinda jealous at some of the stuff you guys can get in there..

There's basically three kinds of weapons I'd most like to have now (and can legally own):

1) Long-ish range hunting
2) ~WW2 rifle
3) Hand gun (9mm or bigger)

First thing I'm doing is study for a "hunters exam" which basically tests your knowledge of hunting laws, practical info, game etc.. I have the materials already and I'm planning on taking the test next month. After that I can apply for a hunting gun permit (bolt action rifles and shotguns). You can't legally hunt without the "badge" you get from the exam and in practice it's the easiest way to get your hands on a gun (as you need to have some kind of a valid reason to own one). If you can't legally hunt, why would you need a hunting rifle etc..

As I have a wedding coming up, my funds are a bit limited at the moment. My plan is to apply for a permit to a .22 rifle which I can use to practise until I have money for a bigger caliber rifle. My uncle has a rifle he doesn't use (belonged to my other grandfather) so I can get it for free. I can also use it in a nearby indoor range which is a plus. For a larger caliber rifle shooting, I need to travel a bit so I can't do it all the time.

As for the "big gun", I'm getting a bolt action rifle. I'm mostly interested in target shooting (long-ish range) but at some point I'd like to hunt as well. It's just hard to do that when you don't have a car..

I have to see if my grandfather wants to give me one of his moose rifles but I'm mostly interested in buying my own. Most interested in Sako Tikka T3 CTR Adjustable. With a semi decent optics it would probably cost around 1800€ at least. Dream would be something like a Sako TRG-42 but it's way out of my price range.

I'm also very much in love with old WW2 era-ish battle rifles. I'm getting one at some point but I'm not sure if I should get one of these first instead of the new rifle. At least they would be much cheaper (around 400-600€ vs. 1800€).

Favourite option would be the Finnish (duh) M/39 Mosin Nagant variant ("Ukko Pekka") which was the main infantry rifle in the Winter War and Continuation War. In addition to looking bad ass, it's said to be the best Mosin variant there is.

There's also other great WW2 rifles I like but the M/39 is the most common one in Finland for obvious reasons.

In some time in the future I'd also like to get a hand gun (for target shooting). While a permit for either of the two above is still relatively easy to get, a handgun permit is much harder. You need to be able to prove you have minimum of two years of experience in hand gun shooting. Basically this means that you need to visit a shooting range regularly for two years and practice. This needs to be proven to the police as well.

Only after this you can apply for a permit but there are still strict restrictions. The gun you apply for needs to fit for the sport you are planning on using it for. So something of a larger caliber might be hard at first. Might need to settle for a .22.

Lot of new guns are shipped with excess lube, you can wipe them down a bit, most of it will burn off in initial shots.

Is there an IPSC club near you? Can you own a pistol for IPSC competition and keep it at the club? That would be a great way to get a lot of practical use, practice and fun at the same time!

As soon as I saw Finland I was thinking of the Moisins...such amazing rifles and such great pieces of history. Can you get old surplus ones pretty cheap there?

I love Kimi Raikkonen, btw.

I think there's a one at the local garrison. They also have the nearest rifle ranges to my house.

I would need to apply to join if I want to take part in either and use their ranges at the garrison. And I'm gonna apply once I get my permits in order etc. Hopefully they will accept me. AFAIK it's a civilian club though many of the members are career soldiers.

I think I'm gonna start at the local range downtown since I just join there by paying for the membership. Then I can get some practice there before trying practical (which is more interesting imo).

My small but growing collection is looking like something out of a GTA game...

I hope to have everything in one place once I get my own safe. For the time being though, my very valuable stuff (particularly the Winchester model 53 and Browning Citori) stay locked up in my grandparents' huge Browning safe.

I hope to have everything in one place once I get my own safe. For the time being though, my very valuable stuff (particularly the Winchester model 53 and Browning Citori) stay locked up in my grandparents' huge Browning safe.

This is a thing of beauty. I have the same setup with mu Mossburg 500, well with the heat shield..

Looks pretty sweet. The PPS already has a great striker fire trigger so I'm interested in trying out the M2. Seriously love mine. Shoots like a gun twice its size. Goes well with a Comp-Tac IWB holster. :D

I would love this IWB for mu M&P Shield.

Nice! I've been meaning to get a heat shield actually. I know it doesn't really do anything worthwhile, but they just look cool, and I don't think it would add too much to the minimalist style I was going for.

So, I picked up my Sig Sauer p220 Elite a few weeks ago. I recently went ahead and took some private instruction on the essentials, as well as some targeting techniques.

My instructor was great. He was a 15 year U.S. Army vet with 3 tours of Iraq. His bio says he earned 2 Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. I went with him because nothing beats experience in this world. Also, because he does 3 gun competition.

Anyhow, the tips he game me from hand placement, finger/trigger placement, stance, breathing, site focusing etc was pretty amazing.

I cannot believe how smooth this 45 shoots, with minimal recoil. It was like butter. I was not expecting that, coming from my revolver experience in the distant past. I had no idea how accurate they could be as well.

I plan to take some other pistol classes, including the license to carry class.

I have been getting this box since they started. It is yet another blind subscription box but this one deals with gun stuff. Mostly AR parts and other misc. gun and EDC needs.

some stuff I have gotten where: Soft gun case, sling, AR mag, steel target, ammo case, knife, multi tool, dummy rounds, flash suppressor, cleaning kit, misc tools.

Finally got the .308 Winchester I've been yearning for...

It's a DPMS Oracle. Weather willing I'll be hitting the range tomorrow. It's a heavy motherfucker at 8 lbs empty and before I put the aftermarket handguard and foregrip. The grip is also uncomfortable as fuck so I'm going to swing by a local shop tomorrow and pick up something to replace it. I moved my optics from my mini 14 so I also need to start looking for a proper one. I haven't shopped for a scope in a while since I've mainly been buying handguns. Any suggestions that won't break the bank for long range target practice would be appreciated.

So for the first time in forever I need to watch my spending because I'm about to close on a house amongst other things. Anyway I'm caught with a dilemma.

New pistol or Pistol Suppressor? I have my NFA Trust and I'm dying to use it on something.

Pistol = HK USP9 Tactical LE (2015 Model not the SD)
Suppressor = Rugged Suppressors Obsidian 45

Pistol I obviously could have this week. Suppressor I can't even find instock to even start the process. Suppressor is also significantly cheaper. Decisions.
