Avoid it, or at least wait until it hits the $20 price range.
Very linear quest, with seldom side-quests that aren't even worth bothering with. Battles are monotonous and bland, and you'll find yourself wiffing at each enemy, getting more and more frustrated.
There are no shops (at least, I think), you'll constantly find yourself gaining new equipment through the many scattered chests, or in the random battles that pop up out of nowhere.
Music is excellent, nice and loud and booming, just like it should be. Chock full of LOTR music, giving it a very good atmosphere.
You'll earn lots and lots of little video clips from the movies, with Gandalf narrating your entire story. Blah.
Evil Mode, haven't bothered with it, but the basic premise of it (you play as the enemy and kill the characters) does not sound fun, so I avoid this as well.
I liked it mainly because it was very linear and pretty easy. I only died a handful of times. Kinda one of those games that you can play for a hour or so, have some decent fun, and then go to bed. Took me 28 hours for 100%.
Mind you my experiences with RPGs is limited to only Fable and KOTOR.
Not as bad as some people claim, but not much better.
+ Pretty graphics
+ You get to be a hero in the LOTR setting
+ Evil mode is kind of neat, if very limited
- Extremely linear
- Combat system is fundamentally broken, especially once you get Idrial powered up
- Story fundamentally breaks LOTR continuity (remember that bit in the books where
Gandalf faced the Balrog alone other than his trusty companions Berethor, Idrial and Elegost?
No, me neither...)
- Very tenuous attempts to tie the game's plot in with movie footage
There are plenty of better ways to spend your money unless you're a Tolkien whore who loves RPGs, even the bad ones.
Friends I know who liked this game are all very casual RPG fans. The source material hooked them, and the linearity kept them going. It did boggle my mind when my roomate passed by KOTOR and Xmen Legends....to play Sudeki instead. Now he wants LOTR: Third Age. /Sigh.

Aye...there are only a handul of enemies with lots of size changes and color swaps
The AI is rediculously retarded
The moves take too long
The game is too fucking easy to break (drain a mage and cast AP regen and viola...infinate skill points)
the premise behind the story is a joke
the limitation to only what the movies contain make the game bland
the 'integration' with the movies creates one of the worst tie-ins ever
The game progression is too slow
The quests ALL consist of "12 out of 15 items collected"/"4 out of 23 wargs killed"
the items and equipment are plentiful and the names are not confusing "Third Age Targe of Fullspring Everescitation Folly"
The game balance is fucked
Are you asking where in the three films where Berethor, Idrial, Elegost, Hadrid etc. come in?
Well, they don't from what I remember (I am no LOTR buff however, so prove me wrong if you please). Although in the game, some characters do give you a hand, such as Legolas.
From what I read in preview materials, all the main characters of the game would be someone in the background at some point in the movies. Most likely, they just stated that "elf #7" in the row where Aragorn stands at Helm's Deep is Idrial, etc.
