Right there without, being unemployed without the chance to go on unemployment + loans. Great position to be in....

Nope, no one else is unemployed. Anywhere. It's just you, we're all pointing and laughing at your misfortune.

I just got my first job in almost 3 years. Gonna be making a whopping $10/hr selling computers at Best Buy.

Was on an ambulance as an EMT. Had emotional breakdown, quit my job... Now I'm doing good, but finding another job is proving tough.

My friend's mom said I should go into this line of work, since I'm interested in helping people. But yeah, I don't know if I could hack it, seems like it would be a big mental challenge every single day.

This is why I'm going to CC and loading upon as many transferable credits as possible. I dread having to take out a student loan.

Pro tip because my sister was unemployed for only around a month. The places that were hit at the beginning of the recession (i.e. banks) are starting to hire again.

Graduated in december (M. Sc in Organic Chemistry). My advisor wasn't great and isn't certainly renown. All four of us who graduated from his lab are jobless. Doesn't help that a lot of pharmaceutical companies closed in my area. Will probably take any part time job and go back to uni in september in Pharmacy.

Yeah, I've been unemployed since earlier this year. $10,000 debts but no luck finding a new job yet. :( Can't even seem to get hired at places like Steak 'n Shake.

Well, it wasn't the job that broke me down. It was a lot of personal stuff that was just driving me crazy and some unsolved issues from a death of someone I was close to.

There are probably better careers for helping people.... EMTing forces you to see the scum of society. I got so tired of the drug seekers..... If they can't drive to the hospital, they just call us. Seems like 80% of my calls were drug seekers. The other 15% was people over-reacting or seeking out attention. Then the remaining 5% were actual emergencies.

And do believe me, you send more people on than you do save them.

Being unemployed sucks.

For the moment, I'm also unemployed. I have an interview with Walgreens next week, but so far I'm just trying to find a summer job before I start law school at the end of August. So yay, more debt!

If you can't get a job now, extra further education is not going to help you. Unless you want to be part of the phd cycles of professors teaching students to be professors without contributing to society. Fucking ancient history phd students are a fucking cancer. No where to go but back into teaching. What's the fucking point? Get a fucking job you cordoroy brainiac fuck.

Yep since September 2009 after finishing up a senior project and helping a prof with research.

I'm not smart enough to do high-level programming or do entry-level hardware design.

I've considered suicide but it's very self-fish.

Had a phone interview yesterday. Totally bombed it. :(

I screwed myself out of a writing gig with Barnes & Noble/SparkNotes the other day. Although they were sketchy on details, I've no one to blame but myself. :p

Where did I say I wanted to do a Ph D? Believe me, I had a terrible advisor and there is now way I'm gonna destroy careers like him. I will do Pharmacy (to become a pharmacist in about 2 years with all the credits I already have). Maybe reading is not that easy for you.

What the fuck are you talking about? Just like the other service industries in the US, schools are providing you a goddamn service and people who work there are legitimate workers. That service is a goddamn education, and you can do whatever the fuck you want with it in the same way that you can do whatever the fuck you want with your weight watchers I lost 50 pounds certificate.

I have no one but myself to blame as well. I didn't do any research on the type of questions they were going to ask and drew a blank when they asked.

I may have an interview at a place next week and I'm worrying about this happening too. I'm just trying to familiarize myself with as much of it as possible, plus think of random stuff like where I see myself in 5 years, etc.

Was unemployed for all of 2010 (but going to school while job hunting so not a complete loss)

Just got a call today and am now employed, in a really solid (as far as building my career/resume, not so much in pay yet) job. Lesson learned: don't be afraid to to ask for favours.

I feel for the unemployed, having been there many times now.

In December of 2007, I graduated from college and found a job with Citigroup. They laid me off 6 months later due to budget difficulties, stemming from...well, you know.

After that, I was unemployed for awhile, but eventually landed a job repairing PC's for WaMu. They were bought out by Chase, and of course I was squeezed out in the merge.

I was then unemployed for awhile, and finally, I desperately took a low-paying third party helpdesk job. It was awful. There were maybe 8 of us on a good day, and we provided support for 200 companies of all shapes and sizes.

I eventually landed a job fixing PC's for a major retailer, and got out of there as fast as I could. I'm still on this one, and doing much better. This one looks to last, thankfully.

My point is this: The job hunt is an awful beast. There were days where I didn't even want to get out of bed. But I persevered, even in this tough market. I hope nothing but the same for all of you, because like I said, I know what being habitually unemployed can do to a person's mindset.

Sorry. I hope you don't think that was a 'subtle,' snide way of saying it's your own damned fault.

I handed in the articles they wanted later than expected and the job had already been filled. :/

I applied for a job as community manager last week. A once in a lifetime opportunity because of the company I'd be working at. Waiting for the answer.

2009 was my year of shit and has set me up to potentially losing my house (currently battling a way out).

I worked for a company for 5 years that got hit by the housing market crash as their product was directly related. They were purchased by a German company and became the largest company of that product in the world. As a result, the new overlords put a finance guy in charge of IT Operations and the layoffs started happening. I got laid off in April of 2009. Stayed unemployed and unable to find anything until July of that same year. The 3 months that I was at home, my savings had whittled down some but I was still in decent shape. Found a comparable job that seemed like it was on the up and up. 3 weeks after I started working there, they announced a merger with another company. 3 months after that, I'm back looking for a job again. Didn't strike anything until January of 2010 and my savings had been completely depleted. I'm happy to be employed right now, but had to take a $25k pay cut just to BE employed and now my financial woes start.

I dont envy anyone who's unemployed and especially the ones who are just graduating and have to compete with people like me who are also seeking jobs but have experience to back it up. This isn't a friendly time and good luck to all that fall on bad tidings.

Misunderstood your post and thought your friend's mom said you should get into selling anime :lol What job did you get after the anime store closed down, BTW?

Edit: And no OP, you're not the only one who's unemployed. The company 'd worked for for about 3 1/2 years had to close down this february, and I've been sort of unemployed since then (I do have a job answering phones for a local electric power company a couple of hours per week.. Not exactly a high salary job, but combined with unemployment benefits, I'll get by)

Edit 2: And I sent an application for a job as a secretary at a local doctor's office. Still haven't heard back from them, so we'll see..

Sorry man. It's not my reading skills, it's my writing skills that are at fault. All I meant to say to you is:
If you can't get a job now, extra further education is not going to help you.

The rest is from my experieneces with highter eductaion students who keep going and going but with no sence of work related closure. I honestley was not aiming the

What's the fucking point? Get a fucking job you cordoroy brainiac fuck.
at you.

My parents both work /worked in higher education. When they divorced both their new parters also worked in higher education.

Through this situation I met quite a few people who sole surpose seemed to be to keep educating themselves for the purpose of being educated. I myself have a batchelors degree with honours but I went about it a slightly different way.

I did my GCSEs (highschool diploma) then did A levels, then as I had no idea what I wanted to do I went on the dole (social security) for a year and a half and had a fucking laugh.

That got very tired, very quick and although I thought I was entitled to a semi decent job, employeres disagreed and I realised I needed to work without being a snob.

For the next five or so years I worked regular service industry jobs and got a lot more of a useful education than any school, college or university has ever given me. Towards the end though I realised I could do better for myself , with some effort, and went to university. Three years later I graduated, but because of what I had done before I applied for every job I possibly could, and after a false start got something that was vaguely worthwhile.

Back to what I was talking about in my original post; I met lot of people who had no intention of contributing anything to society other than recylcing the words they had been taught themselves.

They went from BSC to MSC to PHP to fucking nowhere. They had no intention of putting any of their knowledge to use other than waffling about subjects no one else had any knowledge or interest in other than themselves, and used that knowledge to make themselves feel important.

At no point did I mean to discredit education. It is what everyone should be given access to and themselves should embrace. However there is a sub culture of people who live withtin the educational world who have no idea about real life and real working values. They were the people I was having a go at, not you.

Switching diciplines though seems a little sudden, are you not prepared to go a little lower than your self esteem alows at the minute and take a junior chemical related job?

I've had 8 pints now, sorry for my spelling. All the best to you in your future.

I was almost unemployed (got notice of termination at my job) along with 70 other people at my bank, but two days later got a quick interview for another position and was hired immediately because I'm awesome. So to answer your question, no.

Although I was kinda hoping for unemployment checks. I want outta this job and outta this town and I just don't understand how people do it while working a full time job.

I decided to go with a Masters as well, in education. I wouldn't mind a job as a school administrator. Looking to have a permanent job by age 26.

I worked for a bit at the boss' warehouse while looking for new work, then wound up back in grocery working overnight. Been wanting to escape that for awhile, if this interview happens next week, I may finally do just that.
