I'm unemployed, but I make more money than I did working now so it all evens out. No I'm not coasting on the government, friends, or my parents. I get to play video games all day, or hang out all the time with my friends/roommates. :)

Three more months work and then I'm unemployed! I'm actually some what happy that I will be unemployed. I have been offered a new contract at current work but I'm not going to take it. I hate my job and it's slowly killing me so I'm just gonna quit and hop into a plane and fly to some where indonesia where it is warm every single month. I will set up my hammock between palm trees and I will eat coconuts and drink booze for long as I have money.

Working sucks.

Great advice. I just quit a job that was killing me and I'm taking some time to relax and find the joy of life again. We have the rest of our lives to work... take a break if you can.

Keep fighting guys. I'm still 2 years from graduating, but looking for internships has already made me feel awful. Contacted about 70 companies give or take a few so far and not a single interview.

Knowing people at my school who's gotten internships and entry level jobs at places like Goldman, UBS, or McKinsey's certainly doesn't help make me feel better. But it's when people who I know aren't as capable landing internships that makes me feel awfully bitter. I wish I knew what I'm doing wrong.
Did they have contacts? Good references that would vouch for them in person?

Here's how audio engineering works: 99% of the time your competition will know a band better than you do and will edge you out, despite being considerably inferior. Being good at your job is a long term trust thing that keeps people coming back. Having contacts, knowing people, having references, etc. is a foot right in the door - almost jammed in the door - and those return clients know people too, and thus your network builds to even greater lengths.

I'm not bitter anymore. I can easily stomp people in technical acuity if I have to - but I never have to because that never matters. It's the word of mouth, the genuine networking. In music it's generally becoming a fan and then letting that create opportunities, so you have to like what you hear first, which gets of the possibility that you'll be working with a shitty band in that instance. (Down the road things are different.)

This is coming from a different field, but it changed very little when I entered the working world. "So and so talked about you; they said you were reliable," etc. Those things go a damn long way.

and here comes the second class to feel the pains of the recession.

Join the party!

Of course I ended up getting employed at Wal-Mart, and I'm just scraping by while living with the parentals.

I choose to be , i prefer just staying up all night watching movies and gaming, can't be botherd with the stress of a job, and i don't need the money (staying with the folks)

So a job would just be a waste of time for me

your mommy and daddy buys you every newly released game you want? that's pathetic.

Unemployed since mid-jan of 2009, bad family situation yet living at home. Somewhat disabled, so little things like not being able to drive while living in a not-urban area take quite a toll.

Really didn't know what to do with myself for some months, then some manner of desperate epiphany bubbled up to the surface to try my damnedest at an autodidact videogame developing plan---basically the earliest childhood notion I can remember even slightly having while everybody else dreamed about being lawyers or some such.

Last of the work savings is going/has went into hardware/software/maybe books, crawling my way up from beta testing and English script revision to the tougher aspects, and finally landed something recently like an unpaid apprenticeship that will hopefully get me underway on general programming, 2D art, and hopefully digital music composition.

Hope is to be able to pull off some sort of one-man Indie online developing/selling gig, as the money simply isn't there for contracting out this or that as most Indie's currently do, or get visible enough/connections to get a proper job working on something---or a bit of both. It is a longshot by far given the above complications and others, but I honestly am about out of ideas otherwise.

Unless I manage something unusual in a pizza/food related context...somehow I think and experiment awful lot about pizza nowadays in IronGAF...

Outlook isn't looking good for many reasons honestly, but at this point I reckon there's little else to do besides go full force in spite of it. "Unemployed time" surely makes for a longer day than most others.

Hang in there unemployed GAF!

That reminds me.. I have a friend that gets lots of money every month from the government to do nothing. He pretty much makes more that way than he would if he had a full time minimum wage job. Yet he has no bills or anything to pay since he lives with his mom so he just spends it all on video games and things every month. :[

Your living the dream.
About a year ago I had to move back into my family home, I find it so demoralizing.

The odd thing is I have a friend who owns a Tattoo parlor and still lives with his parents.

I will be starting a new job next Wednesday; my long national nightmare will soon be over.

Until then, I will enjoy my last weekend of freedom getting tanked and watching sports!

I was recently employed after nearly a year long unemployment stint. Hang in there guys! I went through hell while being unemployed, depression, stress, the works, so I know what it's like.

Just focus on building a new skill in the mean time while searching for work, learn a new piece of software, a new programming language, a new spoken language, read some business books, anything, it really helped me out.

Not that I know of, but then again, if I did know, I probably would have had a shot somewhere. I just wish I weren't an idiot and actually did something worthwhile summer of my freshmen year. Not only does my resume not tell anyone why I'd want to work in finance, I can't even tell them a cohesive story about what I did do.

So defensive lol. I know people that make a living selling things on craigslist, amazon, and ebay. I never said drugs specifically, although that could of been an option.

So how do you earn a living good sir? If you dont mind me asking.

Test experimental drugs for side effects pretty much. My arms look like Junkies arms, but I get paid a good sum to maintain my lifestyle of buying games, importing goods, hang out with friends every month or so, rent, and food. Going to start going to Krav Maga lessons with my roommate to shake things up a bit. I get around 2-4 thousand dollars each time I do a trial for a drug.

Nothing wrong with using government assistance if you're unemployed. You paid taxes to support it when you were employed, and you will again. Unless you want to go into a slippery slope argument about poor people not paying their fair share even when employed...which misses the point of unemployment support and a progressive tax system. It's meant to keep the population healthy, reduce crime, and long term increase productivity. If we just said "to hell with the middle and lower classes" then most of us would be doing grunt labor and our GDP would be far behind most nations.

Ah, makes sense now. I actually knew a guy who did that for a living as well. Whatever pays the bills man.

I hate my job, everybody at my job hates it. But I can't quit, not in this economy. Bills are killing me. I'm grateful to have a job, but growing up sucks. But In a year, my job should be worth it when the free health benefits and paid vacations kick in.

The dream is living at home with your family, sponging off the government for roughly £100 a week (unless hes under 24 so its £40 a week) and doing nothing but playing games from 08/09?:lol

Fuck that, I spent 8 months unemployed (got made redundant at 23rd Dec 08) and it was living hell.
I was constantly broke, I literally had £10 a week to live off after rent and mobile bill im locked into.
I ate into basically 2K I had saved, by the time I got employed again I had £60 left in the account
I had to constantly put up with my mums stupid bullshit about how I was taking their tax money and how I was being an unproductive member of society.
It completely destroyed my enjoyment of video games.
The only "good" I got from it all was I learned to manage my money insanely well.

It fucking sucked big time and I dont wish it on anyone.People that say ist living the dream or amazing that you get to sit around and do nothing all day are fools in my eyes.

One day Kentpaul will wake up and realize hes pissed away god knows how much of his life away and how all those years dossing he could have been saving to do something amazing like traveling the world.

Well my friend I spoke of has never worked a job. He's cheating the system of mental health benefits by saying he has bills to pay, when he doesn't, for example. honestly with how impossible it seems to be to get any kind of benefits without somehow lying, it's tempting.. Though I think the system is messed up in the first place because of people that take advantage of it..

I'm starting to stress out about bills. I won't be able to sell off enough things in time for next month to cover my minimum bill payments. So I need to find a damn job soon. :( It's soon going to be 6 months unemployed. And I don't get unemployment or anything. My last job was just a shitty temp job at gamestop for the holidays that didn't even give me any hours. I hope fixing my car doesn't end up costing too much.

Coming from the guy who deletes 8 hours from his life everyday at work , I get enough from the goverment to always spend time with my friends, take short breaks, eating out ect, i just don't feel the need to do a boring job.

Ud be suprised how good the world is walking around during the day when everyone else is stressing away and getting grey hair / slipping into depression at age 40

Yeah, the job marketplace isn't for me. It really didn't help my social phobias that much either, so this is the way to go for me. :lol Busting my ass for minimum wage that hardly paid the bills in comparison to what I'm doing now was terrible.

Hopefully your hard work pays off man, take a nice long vacation and have some fun. ;) I know I'd like to visit some nice places, restaurants, and such if I wasn't so lazy. :lol Going to Japan with friends next year to visit some temples so it should be fun sketching the scenery.

This is one thing I wish I was good at. Its crazy how when I'm dead broke...I can survive fine...barely making it, but surviving. But when I get money, I waste it on shit I shouldn't be buying in the first place. Its hard for me using that "im broke" mentality when I have money.

I'm starting up a savings account with the credit union at my job though, with payroll deductions so I wont notice that I actually have more money in another account. Maybe that will help.

I really want to pay off my motorcycle so I can move out again. Moving back home was and is depressing.

Thanks for the advice. I really want to travel, but my schedule really limits how far and how long I can leave for.

Wow, just wow. Are you really such an idiot? Think you are better then those people who actually work (or in this topic really want to work) for their income?

Guess what, life isn't free, it isn't always fun, and we all need to work to support ourselves. You can't tell me you want to be 30, 40, 50 and life with your parents, the only money you have being that little bit you get from the government. I would rather kill myself then life like that.

You're an insult to all the people here who want to take the shittiest job, just so they can pay the bills. Grow up, man.

Oooooooh! That's right, I forgot that they set aside the Kentpaul fund when you worked two years ago just for this occasion. My bad sir, continue.

I was for a couple months about a year ago (August - November) because the Progressive Paradise of California is such a hellhole.

I settled on a low paying job just to have some income and have since found better employment, but year, being unemployed is a nightmare, and collecting unemployment checks was humbling.

yeah.. im probably going to spend most of my life unemployed. fucking health issues made me quit university 3 times so im 27 years old now with no higher level education and serious health issues... great combo. real fun trying to find a job that wouldnt kill me (or my back rather).

been an intern at the local police department for the last 6 months though, doing 4 hour days. tough for me (i can almost pass out from pain) but i like the people there and it's very interesting to see all the cases heh, some crazy shit goes on in our city..

Let's just agree that we both value different things in life. Some of us value hard-work and earning our way to the places we want to be in life. And you would rather have it subsidized by your government. I think we come from different schools of thought on this one.
