Recently joined the ranks of the unemployed. If anyone knows of any AP positions in the game industry, shoot me a PM. I have production experience and have been in the industry a long time.

You've got to take that job. It's permanent as well too? Yeahhhhhh. I understand the burn bridges thing but just look at this thread...you gotta do what you gotta do.

Just to clarify it is a temp to perm situation. Basically I get in there, work for 6 months and if they like me I get hired. But yeah I am going to take it. They asked for a writing sample and waiting to hear back from them.

ukGAF member here, finally after months of searching I have landed a job, and about to start on Monday. Now for me this is an intern role as part of my Uni degree, but the job searching still took over 8 months and with student debts that's no fun. Now I'm off to find a place in Chester where I'll be based.

The question I have to ask to GAF is, I've spent over 4 months sitting around be a lazy s.o.b and now I'm back in the job seat with responsibilities... How do members of GAF deal with that change of no more late night movies, gaming sessions and being able to go out whenever you like?

However the perks of actually having a job far out-way the early starts so I'm very grateful with what I've received and to all members unemployed, keep at it as anything can happen!

You will have so much adrenaline going the first couple of days you won't be able to sleep anyway. Your body will crash on it's own after a couple of days. The thing you are going to have to block out mentally is the fact you can't look at TV all day, surf the net, go wherever you want, etc. At that point you have to try to remember how badly you wanted that job and stick to it. It is definitely a shock to your mind when you go back to work after not working for so long.

Working a job should always be part of a long term goal. You are bettering yourself by going to work. You should be getting closer to that goal every day. You're constantly improving your conditions; the accomplishments are real and long-lasting (and if they aren't, you're not in the right place.)

I know what my goal is, and I'll move heaven and earth to get it done.

I think my problem has been killing things before I even begin them - thinking about work all the time, even on my days off. Applying goals to free time doesn't work for me. It starts to feel like work again.

Thanks for the advice guys, feeling the excitement is one thing, the hard part is making sure you don't burn yourself out. I have this problem, I'm very good at what I do, however I tend to go too deep into whatever I focus on whether it is work or nerding etc. Pace is important and for me when I was unemployed having rejections and always to be on call, ready for an interview really made the days tougher.

I know the idea is that an interview/job could be around the next corner but having to be prepared was difficult, I don't lie the ease of just sitting around scoffing pizza was a comforting thought. However I realise that I have been very lucky in my life, I'm from a family that supports me through-out and at a Uni which gives me plenty of opportunity, and thankfully have a job that is catered for me. So I won't waste this opportunity! For me personally it's great to see an area of the forum for people to hear each other's job troubles. It certainly helped me when I was going through all this, so once again NeoGAF helps yet another random person!

Soon to be unemployed. (This is my last month at my current job)
So if someone from Argentina GAF wants to hire a game designer junior just PM me. :D

Sometimes you have to suck up your pride and do what you have to. I mean, if the choice is to stay in your own place, spend every penny you have, then moving in with your mom anyway, then just bite the bullet now. No need to get completely broke and then be forced to do it. Better to determine you next move than have it determined for you.

To be honest, I already know that's pretty much what I have to do. It's just something I really don't want to do. Think of reaching into a a pile of human feces because you're boss ordered you to do it. You're obligated, you know you have to do it and ultimately you know it won't kill you but you really don't want to.

I fucking hate the idea. HATE IT. But I know I don't have a choice anymore. I haven't had any callbacks despite putting in tons of applications and resumes.

Opposite for me. Im so sick of applying to jobs and not getting any response that vacuuming sounds fun.

Yeah, getting few or no responses is such a huge motivation killer. I went from being motivated where I would craft my resume and cover letter to not really giving a shit anymore. I haven't given up looking for work related to my education but it just gets harder and harder every day to look for jobs.

Are you guys just applying or sending in a resume without following up? I always call a few days after sending something in to make sure they at least got it and have read it.

I just went through this after having a two-month break at the start of summer. Oh, those late nights with movies and video games were great. So was getting up early and doing whatever the hell I wanted all day.

But when I landed my new job, I knew it was time to roll up my sleeves and get back to work. I looked at my break as a once-in-a-lifetime summer vacation, something I'll always look back on fondly. And I knew that in this economy, with the current job market, I was very fortunate to have only been out of work for two months, and especially to have found a job so attractive.

I guess it's just like anything else: you take it as it comes. Know what you need to do and then just do it--simple as that.

And it took me almost no time to get back into a "work" mindset and schedule. The stress of starting a new job and learning all the ins and outs meant I was completely exhausted and ready to crash in bed by 9:00 or 9:30 instead of 2:00 or 2:30 a.m.

In addition, I felt a whole new appreciation for both having a great job and having time off. My evenings and weekends took on new importance, and I found myself wringing the most possible pleasure from every moment.

After about two months, I finally got two job offers. I picked the one company I really wanted to work for.

Good luck to the others and DO NOT GIVE UP. Send resumes out, do followups, send thank you notes if you do have interviews, be positive, and always look people in the eyes.

Man, been about 10 months for me now. Less than 2 more and it'll be a year. I don't know what I'll do then. That's going to be a really horrible day. At this point I'm just trying to send stuff through Craigslist and hope that something will click somehow. I'm not even bothering looking in the industry much anymore. There's nothing there as long as this economy sucks and there are far far more experienced people out there competing with me for the menial jobs that I could do.

I just had a successful interview and got the job. It's been over a year since I've been employed. *happy dance*

Don't give up guys, there are jobs out there!

Congrats man. Same deal with my wife. Over the past year she has put in 100's of applications and finally got an interview and job offer with Humana.

Feels good man.

Edit: Also, I know this is just local but Amazon.com is hiring 1500 people for their distro center in Hebron, KY. Jobs paying 12 bucks an hour. Hope that is able to help someone.

Feels good man indeed, and to add to the amazon jobs, there is an Amazon warehouse hiring in Plainfield, IN just west of Indianapolis too!

This is my fourth day at work after more than 13 months being unemployed.

FUCKING HELL, I needed to do something again. And I'm enjoying my new job at a certain advertising agency working on a certain tobacco brand that Solid Snake used to love.

KEEP IT UP UNEMPLOYED-GAF! You'll get a cool job sooner rather than later.

I had an essay to do for the perfect job, i didn't get it. Apparently my essay read well, but i did not answer what the essay really asked for. Hmmm.

right here

I quit my shitty job in SC, moved to MA and started the process. I have 11 years in warehousing, but really want a computer job. I applied for a Geek Squad at Best Buy twice, and some entry level IT jobs. I'm still in school, so without a degree, my resume doesn't even get looked at. I am so sick of manual labor, and that's all that's on my resume. I could do laps around most IT people, but without a degree it's a joke.

I had an interview at a wig warehouse today........

If anyone in the MA (south Boston) area knows of any jobs willing to give me a chance, let me know.

Congratulations! Hope everything works out well. I've been out of work a long time and losing hope but reading this thread brings that hope back.

Been unemployed for over a year. Sold my art for first portion, sold some shady things for the latter portion. I'm about to go to school and live off government grants and continue not working.

We are hiring teachers (and some other positions).

www.teachusvi.net

Pay isn't super great, requirements are high, but it is a steady job in the caribbean. BA minimum, will need Praxis exam and some edu courses for the teacher positions. We post tech positions from time to time, as well as accounting etc. and we hire year round.

Keep your head up and your ears to the ground. I remember getting a crappy customer service job at a seaplane airline after I got my BA and feeling discouraged, but one day at the counter I met my former hs English teacher, who was now an HR director and she got me my current job. If I had turned down the crappy job, I'd never be where I am now, which is a nice, secure place.

Damn, you hopped online to GAF only after 4 days? :lol

i was unemployed for a year... i couldnt take it anymore, so i went back to work on retail. the shift r crazy.. but its a job.

Have any of you guys thought of tradeswork? Instead of trying to pick up low level techinian/internships or god forbid retail work, why not get your hands dirty and find a trades of some sort. There is always positions available and even entry level work pays pretty well. I've been landscaping for a few years and I get a considerable amount more per year then my friends who are interns in business/finance/journalism. It can be hard physically, but it becomes easier after the first few weeks.

I had two interviews, one job had me go to a second interview, but they haven't called me in six days. Now I'm feeling depressed. I got my hopes up. :(

After 9 months as a job seeker after finishing my masters I finally managed to snag a job.

I had a very difficult time searching (foreigner in scandanavia so non-native speaker) and had just 3 interviews in that period.

The biggest tip I can give, beyond the simple not giving up part and tailoring your applications is this:

If you get an interview, by and large, they think you can do the job. It's now up to you to demonstrate just how much you want it. Don't be shy in telling them how much it means to you.

Hope this doesn't come off as too glib; I really feel for those of you still searching. But if you get half a break, make sure you fucking put everything behind it and back yourself in that interview. I told it how it was and why I wanted it more than any other of the applicants they had, and now my entire life and career path has changed for the better.

Best of luck to you all

Not necessarily. You can BS your way into a position, for example programming, especially if they don't give you a technical pre-screening.

While I do agree with that sentiment those kind of jobs can be very tiring going into your 40's and 50's unless you move to management or start your own business.

I'm going into cooking and have been for the last year. It's what I love but I do realize that by the time I'm 50 I may not physically be able to run a restaurant as actively as I am prepared to do in my 30's.

I've been unemployed for 15 months now. The first 6 months was by choice since I was travelling and then went back to school. The following 5 months were a terrible limbo period where I had no idea what I wanted to do and lacked any ambition. Over the last 4 months I've been applying a lot, often to no result. I just had an interview that went pretty well, but I have little confidence at this point. I'll find out in a few days if I get the job or not. Even if I don't, I've got a more positive mindset these days and am keeping pretty busy. I'm got drive and some vague sense of direction. So I know I'll be alright.

I took a 2-hour ferry and stayed in a hotel overnight in order to do an interview yesterday. I let them know that. I fucking hope that means something to them. :lol

1 hour and 25 minutes till i start my new job , smoked the last of my hash last night with my girlfriend , so hopefully pay day will be soon

5 hour induction ftw, wish me luck gaf

Good luck.

the nerves are getting the better of me , i'm usally above life looking down , now i'm in with the pressure fail.

I'd rather be watching the wire and playing halo reach all day drinking beer (Its my birthday tomorrow so i'l be doing that tomorrow, that and going on an epic irish pub crowl in the streets of glasgow tomorrow night )

Life is good, work is not.

I've been without a job for two years. Quitted the last one, when the stressful 12-hour days began to wake me up all sweaty several times a night. I've just recently started looking for a more relaxed job from non-profit organisations. Moneywise the current situation is not really a problem. I still get about 3/5 of what I earned per month, plus I own my apartment, so I don't need to pay rent.

I got a letter from a job I interviewed for telling me they're not interested. :( I thought I did great in the interview. :/

I thought I did great in the interview I had yesterday. Woman called me up this morning saying I was unsuccessful, I asked for feedback she said I didn't give any eye contact. I WAS GIVING EYE CONTACT!

Feel really upset now :(

yeah, i am. Got my diploma yesterday (surveying engineer), now i have one more week of work in nearby grocery store.

Recession struck hard this year in my field (otherwise i would be surveying stuff and not working as a cashier) and job situation is looking quite grim.

Coming up on one month of unemployment. I completely stopped playing games and I've applied to over 50 jobs and I'm just now getting calls and interviews. I really hope one of these are successful

My 24th month of unemployment and this was my third interview. I should be trying harder.

I think I should be doing this:

got hired for the holiday season at a retail store

will be unemployed in January 2011

so basically i gotta keep on looking :lol

Yet another job rejection from a company where I "had a chance" (ie. knew someone there). I've nearly given up at this point. I have no idea what companies want anymore. I kept following up with this one too, to let them know how interested I was. In the end it did no good though. And here I am, not knowing what else to do, and nearly a year unemployed.

This is fucking depressing. :(
