I thought I did great in the interview I had yesterday. Woman called me up this morning saying I was unsuccessful, I asked for feedback she said I didn't give any eye contact. I WAS GIVING EYE CONTACT!

Feel really upset now :(
I was told I wasn't open enough. Two rejections in a week have destroyed my confidence.

How long has it been for you being unemployed? After nearly a year, it's got to be the worst feeling I've ever felt. It sure hasn't helped me health-wise since I've been suffering from stress and anxiety which is compounded by these continuous rejections and feelings of being worthless because I am unable to land any work.

In early August I went for an interview at a big Canadian magazine company. I got to the second round of interviews but lost the job to one other person.

In late August I get a call for the guy who interviewed me and is in charge of the hiring. He says that he has a 4 month contract position for me, and it's mine if I want it. The one caveat is that he has to post the job internally for appearances, but the job is mine if I want it. He also says I'll have the contract in early September.

Early September came and went and I still hadn't heard from him. I give him a call and he apologizes and says he is really busy, but he will call me on Monday. He never called.

It's been over a week now and I called him (he wasn't there) and sent him an e-mail. He hasn't responded.

Clearly I've been screwed, has anything like this happened to anybody else? Can I get some sort of retribution (I already tried to call HR, but they don't have an HR department)

Right, I think I have a job. I was unemployed for 6 months last year with no more than a handful of interviews, been about a month this year and I had a very positive interview a couple of weeks ago for an okay job that means I get to leave home. I've since contacted them and apparently they've not yet made a decision, but I'm still hopeful.

Not that I'd accept an offer anyway because I'm preetttyyy sure I've been offered a job with a global company to train in engineering and some computery type things. It's been totally informal so far, so I'm slightly cautious about it, but I'm eagerly anticipating getting an offer letter in the post soon! If I get this then pretty much every problem I have with my life at the moment and I get to live on my own, finally...

I have two interviews this week and I had another one last week. I thought I did well on last week's interview but I can't get my hopes too high. It's getting harder and harder finding jobs to apply to lately.

been unemployed for long enough, and just now have two offers to choose from. They're only retail positions ranging from $8-9.25 an hour, but better than nothing.

I was pretty sure I was going to get this job, the only obstacle was that I didnt have a drivers license, but I got that just over a week ago. I told my the company straight away and they seemed really happy and they were going to let me know soon whether I had the job.

Still waiting.

I finally got a job. I don't really like the job but I just took it. I didn't really have a choice. I'm still going to keep looking. :/

I graduated a week ago. Made a Bachelor of Science. However, so far I'm unemployed. It is really frustrating to see how long some companies need to process an application. And when you receive a refusal for a job you were really passionate about... I mean, in my situation, I should write daily tons of applications. But most of the time, I just do more or less senseless things just to make sure that there is no time to think about my current situation.

However, if I can't find a job within the next three or four months, I'll go back to University and do a Master.

It happens all the time. Sometimes things change and maybe they can't afford that position anymore. Sometimes the hiring manager isn't man enough to admit he was wrong and just dodges you after the fact. He doesn't want to look stupid. If you have called and e-mailed, then there isn't much you can do about it. Just keep looking.

That is the hardest part of the job search. All of these false hope moments. So many jobs that seem perfect, but then someone else gets it.

I'm not a huge poster on Gaf (long-time lurker) but this thread is heart breaking to read as my period of unemployment post-graduation was horrible.

However, I now work in recruitment (the irony!) so I'm keen to find out if any of you guys posting here are from the UK and what your experience with agencies has been like?

I really really hate you guys.

I joined the unemployed camp a few weeks ago when the owner of our operation decided it wasn't worth paying us anymore. Hoping this gets fixed real soon.

I just joined the club last Monday. My position had been outsourced to the Philippines.

I'm currently just laying low. I've essentially been working/in school since I was 16 so after 8 years I deserve a bit of a break. I've put in the request for EI, so that'll help keep me afloat for now. I've been doing some job searching but what I want really isn't available to me in the area... unless I start doing some stupid Customer/Tech. Support job...

Man, been about 10 months for me now. Less than 2 more and it'll be a year. I don't know what I'll do then. That's going to be a really horrible day. At this point I'm just trying to send stuff through Craigslist and hope that something will click somehow. I'm not even bothering looking in the industry much anymore. There's nothing there as long as this economy sucks and there are far far more experienced people out there competing with me for the menial jobs that I could do.

Damn I wish I lived where you lived. There are many entry level opportunities at game and TV/film companies in the SF/LA area, just because that's where they are all concentrated in. NY is ok for TV/film, but almost non-existant for game companies.

There are jobs for these companies, but certainly not "entry level" at all. Most jobs listed are for Senior level people, and those that aren't are no doubt pursued by the most experienced people anyways even if they have to take a pay cut just so they have a job. Because of all the layoffs and studio closures there are a ton of experienced people out of work, and they'll get all the jobs first before any actual "entry" level seeker.

The videogame industry is still in shambles and won't be recovering anytime soon I don't believe. What a horrible choice I made to try and get into it. :(

Looks like this may end up working out in the end, but it could mean a move to LA. Not so sure I like it, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Even though I'm only making 8 an hour its in a field I like and the experience will be good later on when I move up in restaurants.

I was lucky though since I just randomly emailed food trucks since it was a booming market and now I'm moving up through my company.

So keep your heads up folks, after I had graduated I spent almost 9 months unemployed with a stupid and useless internship in the middle for a few weeks. It's tough but you gotta stay active and keep trying.

I'd offer a job at my foodtruck here in Los Angeles but I don't think anybody would be interested in working $8/hr under uncomfortable conditions.

Due to downsizing, my tech spot got cut. I am on the lookout but sadly, I don't have a degree. Hard to get a degree and work full time in the military. If anyone needs 10yrs human resources and 4 years it experience with a security clearance, pm me.

Wow. Hard to believe you are having trouble. I would think that 10 years HR experience would trump a degree. Keep your head up and keep looking.

I'm surprised because usually it's HR preparing the severance packages for people. =(

Well, I had two interviews in the past month or so. The first one I completely bombed, but the second one was successful. They sent me an offer and after some back-and-forth I decided to reject them. It was a combination of incredibly low pay, long hours, and no benefits.

So i'm back on the lookout again, hopeful to get something before December.

Keep your heads up, guys. I was unemployed (and underemployed) for about two years. Then I landed a gig at $16 an hour and within 8 weeks took a job elsewhere at $25. In my area, that's plenty good. Still looking for something permanent (I'm on long term contract) but hey, it's something.

I am not a fan. I have 12 agencies with my records, they sort me out with one interview then never bother to keep in contact. The only contact I get is when I call them to ask about jobs. It is ridiculously one sided.

I have applied to 180 jobs so far, and have had 5 job interviews from that. So I'm not taking it easy.

I've had a better response applying directly to the employer, but as of yet no luck. I have one lead regarding work, this could potentially be the end of the job hunt for me. But I'm not getting my hopes up, as i have done that before.

Recruiters? They're more or less in the same tier as lawyers, used car salesmen, and finance types. At least those people can read.

Just stay productive, keep interviewing, try and stay positive, and meet new people. Relax a little too. I know it is frustrating, but there are a ton of people unemployed, not just you. You will get a job eventually.

I haven't interviewed in a while, which is a very frustrating thing. I can't even get to that point. The kicker was, in regards to the last interview I did, which I of course didn't get the job, apparently, according to someone I talked to after the fact, I actually didn't do "anything wrong" in the interview, which made me go "wtf?". I mean, if I really did nothing wrong, then I'd have the job right? But no, they said something like "well, we had to choose best for the company".

It just makes you just want to kill yourself. :(

And now, I've got nothing. No prospects at all. Just sending out resumes on Craigslist, but that ain't doing anything. The industry I got educated for is in the shitter and I'm not sure if there's a career in it for me anymore.

I agree on this, got work at a food store 2 months ago, while it is majorly shitty I kept on seeking jobs that I wanted to get. I was living on like Brassmonkey1010 was advising and voila! I got 2 great job offers and took a great job at an electronic store in sweden
(mediamarkt). I was really positive at the interview and really had thought through beforehand what I would say to them. I charmed their pants off:D

See every interview as training for the next one you get to and look at the things you could have said better. practice with friends or family etc.

arghh i completely bombed a phone interview just now - it was a technical question about installing outlook express, and I did not look into researching it.

Although I was a fool going into it - I submitted so many resumes this week that it was a blur when they called me up saying that I'll get a phone interview for the tech support job (I rescheduled it for a few hours later) but I completely missed the name of the job! I knew the company but not the exact title, and I applied multiple times to different jobs in this company so...

Yeah, the outlook express question was so unexpected - so I answered it with "well I am not sure with installing outlook express, but I can tell you that probably smilar to installing lotus notes" :lol

I'd just say, "uh, yeah I click on the .msi or .exe install icon and let it rip!"

Leave it, suck it up and move on. A more suitable candidate may have turned up and you signed no contracts, so nothing for granted just keep on looking.

You don't wanna know how long I've been jobless. Good thing is I just landed a job starting january. The pay is alright (1600€/month) and I'll have a hard time to adjust after so much unemployment.

Hmm, this may finally be it (just almost exactly a year unemployed), but I think I may have a situation where I'll have dual job offers at once. This is new territory for me, and each has their pluses and minuses. I'll probably end up taking whichever one offers first though since I have been unemployed for so long and am not in a position to turn anything down.

Got a job after a long ass search.

Data Entry for 15/hr with benefits.

It's not BAD...but I guess it's something I can do while looking for something better. Good luck to you guys still looking!

No job as of 5th the of November. Not so bothered because I want to do not very much for a few months but after that it will be hard. No qualifications, as if lack of jobs out there wasn't a pain in the ass as it is.

I have a job but have been looking another. A while back, I went for an interview, and I got rejected. That's got to be the most insulting, infuriating, embarrassing, down-trodden feeling to ever blanket a person.

Ever gotten rejected by a girl? Yeah, it sucks. It sucks for a while, but you get over it.

Getting rejected for a job really seems like the end of the line, and the hurt takes longer to go away. With a girl, there's always the "plenty of fish in the sea" spin. There just isn't that safety net with jobs. Every time you don't get hired, you feel like that's your last opportunity burned -- and looking at unemployment numbers, it's not too far from the truth.

Every time you try to make yourself feel better, all you have to do is take a few looks at "help wanted" areas online or in-person to get right back depressed.

I`d KILL to do Data entry, do you need any specific skills (on paper) to do the job. 15 seems pretty good pay for it as well.

Loosus, I know how you feel...I was ECSTATIC to get an interview with the Canadian Cancer Society. I thought I would've been perfect. Phone interview went excellent and she seemed happy to get me. Get there, she didn't interview me, but two other people did. Thought I did a good job. Apparently not... :'(

It was closer than my job now AND it paid more AND it would've been nice to make a difference AND it was non-profit, etc etc etc

:'(

VERY nice, congrats man!

Not exactly a job, but I just scored a 6 month co-op with a big time company just a few days ago. I still have to accept it and start filling out the acceptance forms after I stop screwing around on GAF.

Keep your heads up guys.

You gotta get over that shit man. It's all about quantity. You apply to everything you can find and then when you get a few good interviews going you'll forget all about the shitty interviews and rejection letters

This blows. Pretty sure I'm going to have to sell my Samsung Vibrant so I can pay off a bill I can't pay off otherwise.

I've never been in a financial hole before. This seriously blows. -_-

Do your best, and try to stand out in a good way, this is what managers look for with seasonal help and for you to continue working there after.
