I'm about to join the ranks of the unemployed.

Tough times in the whisky trade and I'm being laid off at the end of October after 10 years with the same company. Balls.

So, if anybody knows of a job in the making booze business, let me know.

I would happily move abroad and get a fresh start and all that but don't know where to look. I'm just a bit fed up about the whole thing, I don't think it's hit me properly yet.

I'm sure the OHH FUUUUUCK NOOOOOOO moment won't be too long in coming though.

Do you have a family?

Nope, single and living on my own. There's no jobs in the scotch business just now so I will probably be changing my field anyway. But I would look at anything, anywhere in the world. I would be up for an adventure, starting again somewhere new.

I'm super-lucky, 2 months unemployed(with salary:D) and before my first unpaid day I get a job! And it's much closer than my last job. Just keep it up guys you'll get a job sooner or later. Just look for jobs like crazy and practise on the interview alot.

Just got laid off. First time I've been jobless since I was 14. I'm optimistic however. There's no way things can't get better now

DOUBLE-DIP RECESSION ALL THE WAY!

Well not seriously but so far things are pretty stagnant, so finding a job will be tough for everybody. Flex those contacts and references man!

Update: So, no luck on an actual teaching job. Most schools have already started. I did interview for a teaching aide position that I was asked on the spot if I wanted it. So, I took it. Something's better than nothing, but damn - teacher's aides get paid shit. Oh well, at least I hopefully have an "in" at this district next year or if a teacher gets pregnant...

Aside from a gap of a few months before jobs 4 years ago, I haven't been unemployed since I was 15. I need a break, you guys have it easy.

I know I'm late to this party, but is it wrong that I want to reach through the internet and punch this fucker int he face? Like really really hard.

Anyways, I was unemployed for 6 months and just recently got a job (been about a month so far). It's a sales and marketing coordinator position, exactly what I wanted. Good pay, great people to work with, great work and learning lots. I'm on cloud nine, so f'n happy. Sometimes you've gotta suffer a bit, but then the successes you have will be just that much sweeter.

Hang in there unemployed GAF, you guys will be ok if you keep trying and never give up.

My last recent rejection was tough. It was a company where I actually had a great referral and was told I'd be a shoe-in when I first made the application. Unfortunately, instead of the typical handful of candidates that usually apply, for once there turned out to be nearly a dozen for one simple entry-level position (doing pretty "menial" work). And yeah, I just couldn't compete against all that. The company of course, went for the most experienced person (ie. overqualified) for an entry-level position (ie. no training needed). :(

It's been now nearly 8 months since I was let go from my last job. The stress, and depression that comes with it is nearly unbearable.

I couldn't imagine not working - I've had a job since I was 16. I'd be so depressed and/or bored. Good luck you guys!

EDIT: My buddy went from being unemployed for nearly a year, to randomly meeting someone who had a friend who owned a company that takes care of IT for law firms. The guy offered him a job a few weeks ago and now they're paying him 60 grand a year. It's crazy how lucky that is but you never know, it could happen to you!

I made a website for a son of a friend of my parents and did some work for his mortgage office. Made $8 an hour...not much, but hey, it's a job. I'm starting a full time six month co-op soon where I'll be making $12 an hour. Yeaaaah.

Just landed a full time job as a Production Editor in New York City! It pays 40k/year which is good enough for me. I'm working it more because it's what I actually want to be doing.

In a few years, after I have enough experience under my belt I can hopefully move on to another city. Gotta stay in the Big Apple temporarily to build my resume.

I feel you. I've been unemployed for almost 13 months already and in the meantime I've tried to keep my mind busy making a couple of short films, building my advertising portfolio and whatnot.
Luckily and just before going over the one year unemployed milestone I got a position as a jr. account exec at Grey advertising. Which is a pretty cool gig, even if the first six months the pay is, well, Jr. level. But it's Grey, so it's not like I'm in a position to complain. I was seriously considering robbing banks at this point! And I got the position on 9/9/10, so the Dreamcast 11th aniversary has been happier than ever!

I am unemployed and this shit has been going on for so long that i fear i am going to struggle getting back to the world of work.

I have been unemployed since 9/26/2009. I did Accounts Receivable at that job for 3 years until I got laid off. It's been hard to find another job in the same field as the job market in the SF Bay Area sucks ass right now. I recently starting going back to school (starting last month) to work towards attaining my A.S. in Accounting. I was collecting UI benefits until August 16th and then stopped when I started school. However, I just talked with EDD yesterday and since I am going to school and continuing to look for work, they will continue to extend my benefits until this school semester is over.

What kind of financial assistance did you get for school?

The longest I've been unemployed and not studying was about 4-5 months. Never again. You turn into a computer slug. Leeching entertainment from movies and games... and in the end even normal tasks like cleaning and shopping start to feel like they take huge effort.

I am receiving an $1,100 grant from the State of California for this semester's tuition and books. Haven't got that yet as I an going through "verification" with my FAFSA. The school has to verify my income from last years tax return to make sure I am qualified for that money.

I will also continue to receive my normal UI benefits ($300 week). I am on my 2nd fed-extension for UI benefits, which should run out within the month. I should then qualify for my 3rd fed extension, I think anyways.

Sorta self-employed right now. Working on my own landscaping business has been tough, but so far it's been alright. My other self-employed business is lacking right now though, kids just don't want to learn how to play soccer anymore. It's pretty sad.

Still looking for a real job though, fucking journalism is such a shitty field right now.

Going on two years now. Been living on student loans and my liquidated retirement account.
It hurts to admit this but I'm going on the same. :( Luckily I don't have a wife or kids to support but I am losing hope fast. Sending out resumes but no luck.

At my age (late 30's) I have a huge sense of guilt being jobless. I mean, I've never had a professional career job. I've always worked jobs related to warehouse work. And that type of work seems hard to come by in the part of Florida I moved to.

Credit card debt rising though due to having to pay my car note, paying for insulin/doctor appointments out of pocket. I owe the world to my mother and brother for helping me out. I have a roof over my head and help paying bills.

Graduated in May with an Engineering degree but without full-time job then in June the restaurant that I worked part time for 4 years closed. After that I decided to use the severance pay from that job to take a 6 week vacation to Mexico. Just got back a couple of weeks and started applying all over the place but no luck so far. It's not too bad right now but hopefully things will pick up and I will find a job.

3 months unemployed here, How do you guys deal with the constant boredom?

I've been out of job for year now.

First 6 months were/are bad. I tried to cope with the boredom/depression playing the backlog I've been building, doing some renovation on the flat, going on 2 hour biketrips around the town (new places!).

Most days I waste reading GAF

Opposite for me. Im so sick of applying to jobs and not getting any response that vacuuming sounds fun.

And your surprised you're unemployed?

For those of you who have been unemployed for a while now 6 months+, are you living on your own? If so, how are you paying your rent/mortgage? I ask because I could genuinely use some advice at the moment. I'm faced with the possibility of moving back with my mother and it's tearing me apart.

Really? I am not sure I would have had the guts to take a 6 week vacation in Mexico right after I got laid off with no job prospects lined up. But cool you had the chance to do it.

Sometimes you have to suck up your pride and do what you have to. I mean, if the choice is to stay in your own place, spend every penny you have, then moving in with your mom anyway, then just bite the bullet now. No need to get completely broke and then be forced to do it. Better to determine you next move than have it determined for you.

Okay, I have a question. I got laid off in November from a job I worked at for 5 years, found a temp/contract job in March that I have been at ever since. The job is more work than I did at my old job but I am getting paid nothing. I feel like the contract agency is taking advantage of the situation I was in. The current job has no defined end date though everyone is happy with my job. They have not made any indication that they want to hire me and when I have hinted at it, it has been shut down.

Today I get a call from another contracting company with a project that pays more than I was making at my old job. The work is what I actually enjoy and upfront they are saying this is a position that will be permanent. The catch is that I would have to start soon (like next week) and give my current company little/zero notice. I would hate to burn bridges like that, but not sure I can pass this this up. Then again I would be giving up security of this crappy job (they said they are keeping me on for atleast 9 more months) for something that may be over in 6 months or less if they don't hire me or a bomb out.

WHAT TO DO?

You've got to take that job. It's permanent as well too? Yeahhhhhh. I understand the burn bridges thing but just look at this thread...you gotta do what you gotta do.

I would tell them that someone offered a permanent job with better pay, ask them to they can match that, if not say that today is your last day.

I would go for it, it doesn't sound like you have much to lose leaving where you are and you could be on to something really good at the new place. Best of luck!

Ive got an interview for a Trainee Quantity Surveyor this Wednesday.

Even though i studied this for 4 years and passed my course, im worried that the guys interviewing are going to realize i know nothing about construction.
