So I've been at Best Buy for a little over a month, and I'm already getting antsy about working there.

I'm 23, and I am definitely one of the "older guys" in the store. The people in my department with full-time hours (which are given to those with seniority) are 20-21. And an alarming amount of the other employees are 18-19.

It's a decent job, and probably one of the better retail jobs out there. And I sort of feel lucky to even have it, as my store literally gets dozens of applications every single day. But I feel like it would have been a much better fit for me at 20 or 21. At 23 (24 in Nov), I just feel like I'm spinning my wheels.

I know I'm not going to turn it into a career, but at the same time, I have no other options. My degree is in journalism, which is somewhere between Art History and Business Administration in terms of job placement. I have no other skills. I'm not even a good salesperson, which is literally what every other person in my immediate family does.

I basically have six months until the real world comes crashing down on me.

Seriously? You are 23! Get over it. You got to buy beer for the first time two years ago. Geez!

It wouldn't be so bad if I weren't one of the only guys above college age working there. Even the GM is only 27 FFS.

Aesius: Hahaha, please, do not be intimidated by BB's fixation with young people. BB managers are the most cocky overzealous fuckers in all of retail, and their 18-19 year old minions are a sad sight to see. The ones who act that way well into their 20's are just really, really pathetic human beings. Seriously, BB retail stores are like a retail spin on a high school clique. See that cute girl that has been around for a while who can get away with being a bitch and always moving up? Chances are she's probably blowing one of the managers. This happened in my store and others. It's a big fucking popularity contest. One of the managers slept with at least six girls in our store within a year (and that's what we knew of). It's a small store, too.

If they hate you, that means you have some individuality. Also, the smarter you are, the harder your job will be. They want to bash you over the head with pretentious selling practices and it's really hard to go along with it if you know the product well enough on your own. Bail the fuck out.
Make sure you sign up for Microsoft's Retail ExpertZone and Sony's RLS and milk the shit out of them though, free/cheap games and hardware galore, definitely take advantage before leaving so it was at least somewhat worth it. Thank me later.

I can totally relate to your concerns because I started working there at the same age you did. But, really, do not let it get to you. It's a great feeling once you quit, though.

Just wanted to drop in say that I hope all you fellas find work soon. You're probably all hard working, qualified people. Just keep pushing and you will eventually find something.

Me? Currently on the fence on whether I want to quit college, transfer to art school, go into game development, be a freelance artist/ graphic designer, move to LA and work for my uncle's company or start a small business with my brother. I got a lot of ideas and options on my mind. I just got promoted to key holder (SGA) at GameStop. Starting Sunday, I will be working 40 hours a week. My friends make fun of me for working a "dead end job". But hey, they're either bullshitting their way through college, don't know what they want to do, or they have degrees, but have been unemployed for months. It's a huge improvement over my shitty 10 hour weeks as a GA.

Anyway, you guys will be alright. Just don't give up.

I am, but instead of making a post about my dire situation, I just wanna ask something:

Is there a way to get a free phone with free minutes that gives more than just 67 minutes a month? The one that I have now is bullshit, if you waste 20 seconds they charge you for a minute.

Imma try experimental drug testing. How can I get into that?

I'm so unemployed. :(

I had a job.. mowing lawns.. I'm 21.. But I was fired for not feeling well one day. I didn't know I would be fired for being sick and unable to work. My boss didn't even tell me I was fired. I had to learn from another employee. :(

Anyway, job searching is horrible. I can't seem to land a single interview. Between now and the beginning of June, I have probably applied at 30 different places.. all have either rejected my application, or they just haven't responded. I even call each place about 3 or 4 days after I turn in my application, and most of the answers I get are: "We haven't reviewed our applications yet. Call back in a week."

It sucks not working. I have been unemployed for 2 months due to illness and I'm already going out of my fucking mind. I had a good job before all this then I hit 30 and the shit hit the fan.

Now I'm racking up massive amounts of debt thanks to hospital visits and medication which all go onto credit cards (just on 7k since I left work). I'm still trying to get some kind of benefit from the government but they are more than happy to take their sweet time processing my application.

The doctors say I should be back working by the start of next year which will be good. Then I'll be paying off this debt and saving as much as I can.

Anybody thought about teaching? I know my district is hiring, its all about having a degree in a content area where a district has a need, and doing some tests. Doesn't pay a whole lot, but the benefits are good.

I'd love to teach, but from what I understand, you need to go on a teaching course first, and in order to be eligible for that, you need to have a degree, which I don't have.

That said, I was recently looking at jobs at my local college (one I attended, and completed a course at), and strangely enough, it says that you don't need to have taught before or have any formal teaching qualifications in order to apply for entry level teaching positions. Odd, but I'm not complaining.

I thoroughly enjoyed maths at school and in college, and I did really well in it. I viewed it as a series of puzzles and liked coming up with my own methods for breaking things down and solving them. Most people hate maths, and I think there's a shortage of maths teachers here in the UK, so I'm wondering if I could maybe go that route. I might drop into the colege and ask to speak to somebody for more information.

Anyone ever considered employment in the sex industry? I've been seriously thinking about it.

I could do the porn, but I'd request they don't show my face, or seriously considering male escort work( but only female clients).

I could even work on the set of a porn flick as a lightining assistant or something.

Just wondering if you got a confirmation of that from your employer. >.>

Substitute teaching is where its at! It is your foot in the door and you get paid about 84 a day of about 7 or 6 hours of work.

You don't get to make requests like that. You'd be lucky if you were able to make a living without doing gay porn.

Phone interview went well, but it sucks because they can't tell me if I will make it through to the next round until late next week. Ugh. Off to check on today's new jobs....

The interview yesterday went pretty well. The person interviewing me said I was very thorough, and that I should hear back in about a week whether I make it into the next round of interviews.

This was more of an HR screening, and then my answers/experience are filtered up to the hiring manager.

C# technical test for a different job in about an hour. Been studying pretty hard for this one.

They are walking around and giving people the boot today at my company. I didn't even make it through the main hallway today before someone stopped me and told me the news. Five people so far off my team of fifteen. Now I think they've moved on to another team so the rest of us on mine should be safe.

They let go of someone on another team that does the same job as me.

This is the third round of layoffs. It's maddening. Sometimes it feels like I'm just waiting for the axe to fall.

Good luck to all of you looking for work. I still may or may not join you today.

Passed my technical test...but he said I got like a 6 or a 7 out of 10 on it and that there were stronger candidates technical wise, but that they would still like me to come in for an interview anyway tomorrow and try to impress them.

Some kid in my new job commented today on how there are jobs out there for everyone, you just have to be willing to lower your standards a little. Felt like slapping him.

The thought of spending too much of my life in retail puts me into a serious depression. I'm praying for a lucky break, because right now I'm just depressed pretty much all the time, and sometimes find myself wondering if everything is even worth it.

It's worth it. I had clinical depression over my unemployment (months before it began), but I have a job now and while everything's not perfect, it's definitely getting better. Don't give up hope and keep active either looking for stuff or gaining some extra qualifications. Good luck.

Hang in there folks, another 2 months should see some job openings with people going back to school, retail sales picking up, and manufacturing/services starting to increase a bit. I saw a story where companies were getting a lot of cash on hand but are holding off on hiring due to "uncertainty".

Year-Over-Year Increase: We continue to see positive momentum in U.S. hiring activity. 18% of employers anticipate an increase, 8% expect a decrease, 70% expect no change and 4% are undecided about their hiring intentions. With a seasonally adjusted Net Employment Outlook of +6%, employers indicate a moderate increase in hiring expectations compared to one year ago, when the seasonally adjusted Net Employment Outlook was -2%. The 6% U.S. Outlook is up a bit over last quarter’s 5%.

Stability Continues: The fact that 70% of employers expect to keep staff levels stable is good news for the currently employed.

Most Industries Positive: 11 of 13 industry sectors plan to add staff during the third quarter. Increased hiring is expected in Leisure & Hospitality (+20%), Mining (+17%), Professional & Business Services (+15%), Wholesale & Retail Trade (+15%), Manufacturing — Nondurable Goods (+12%), Financial Activities (+11%), Information (+10%), Manufacturing – Durable Goods (+9%), Transportation & Utilities (+9%), Construction (+8%) and Other Services (8%). The Outlook is negative only in Government (-2%) and Education & Health Services (-2%).

Local Picture Improving: Among the 100 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) surveyed, 95% indicate a positive Net Employment Outlook, indicating that cautious optimism is becoming more widespread.

Regional Picture Improving: Compared to a year ago, employers in all four U.S. geographic regions anticipate hiring increases. The Northeast continues to have the strongest Outlook (+9%), followed by the Midwest (+7%) and the South (+6%). The West has the weakest Outlook (+3%).

Global Picture Improving: Employers in 31 of 36 countries and territories expect to add to their workforces during the third quarter. Employment forecasts are strongest in India, Brazil, Taiwan, China, Peru and Australia. Hiring expectations are weakest in Italy, Ireland, Spain and Greece.

When employment agencies say they've kept your documents on file and will be in touch if suitable vacancies arise, do they actually keep your documents on file or have any intention of being in touch?

I'm not exactly unemployed, but I am definitely suffering with my current job. Wanted to come in here and support everyone else in the job hunting process cause it is a test of will for sure.

I'm in the same boat and could use the support as well. Good luck to everyone.

Just after my benefits expired a week ago, I got hired at the Aladdin Theatre in Portland, OR. I'm going to be working the door, starting tonight. I'm really, really excited to be working there; it's a really respectable music venue (Joanna Newsom and the Dirty Projectors are both playing there!) and hopefully this'll be a great opportunity to learn more about live sound, and about the live music business. It definitely won't pay all the bills, but I should also hopefully find out today or tomorrow if I got into grad school for my MBA, hence student loan time. I don't see why I WOULDN'T get in, but yeah. I've been unemployed for 8 months, after getting laid off from EA in November. Things are finally starting to turn around!

I highly doubt it, anytime I've been told that or have heard that I usually just rolled my eyes, but who knows.

I hope things work out for you, I'd love to work anywhere close to the music industry despite the position, but being in Pittsburgh, there's no chance of that. I've been out for about 9 months also, other than a few temp jobs that ended in a month or so, hopefully I can get into school around January.

Depends totally on the company. I got called for a job a year after I applied there. I had already found something else, so I didn't even talk to them long about it, but they kept it. Seeing that alot of the stuff is totally electronic these days, I could see companies hold on to infor/resumes for even longer now. I have been "that guy" and calling companies back asking if they were hiring and if they still had my info. I have even sent my resume to the same places several times, lol. I feel like I had nothing to lose, right?

I thought my contracting job would be over by now, but it got extended for 2 more months. In reality with their plans I will be here until October atleast. It is security, but man this money sucks compared to what I was making before. I am paying all my bills, getting to save a little bit, but not much money for any fun.

I need to count my blessings though. I know people who still haven't found anything, in part due to them not wanting to take a pay cut. A pay cut is alot better than nothing.

Hang in there dudes. Something will come for you. Alot of people can identify with your plight. Sucks because people who are working and are supposedly "safe" seem to be the most cold and non-caring people I have met. Acting like everyone who isn't working is just lazy. Bullshit.

Still no luck finding a job, boyfriend isn't having any luck either. I'm also pretty much out of pricey things to sell which is how I had been making my minimum bill payments till now which is $400/month. Just got told I need to move out of my moms house because she wants to rent my room out. This is stressful. I really don't know what to do now. :( currently BF and I are staying with a friend though we're sharing his room and his cat has a spraying/pissing problem so it's not the best situation to be in.. I'm kinda just wanting to go ahead and try moving up to Kentucky with him to stay with his dad and brother because I feel like we would at least have better job luck there but would still need the money to cover bills in the meantime and the gas money to drive up there. :[

the union at my company is going on strike on wednesday, i might be out of a job because i don't think i can handle working 72 hours a week. I'm just a nerd working in R&D =(.

I dream about working that much in my sleep.

I always try to remember how lucky I've been regarding housing and money. Threads like these are always a real wake up call for me to get my shit together. After reading some of the stuff here I think it would be best to stay at my job on part time for a few extra months instead of quitting completely for school.

I never understand why some parents do this. Do you really want to see your son or daughter out on the streets?

I guess it makes me feel glad and happy for my parents cos I know they will only kick me out when I do something really really fucked up.

maybe shes a crappy daughter? Maybe her mom relies on, and needs the income of the rented room? There are variables here.

I'm 20 and have never had a job in my life. I mow lawns (it's horrible) but only as a chore. I have enough freetime to have a part-time job but I don't know if my parents think I'm ready yet or will be able to find one that will fit in my school schedule. I'm about to finish summer school and I have never been this bored without videogames. Living at college without a job is ruining my hygiene and social life. I feel like it's time to start working.

I lost my job almost 2 months ago (customer support and sales for a small food and beverage company that manufactured and sold agave nectar based products). Loved my job, and my boss loved having me there, but they could no longer pay my salary, and the company had major downsizing.

Still staying positive and looking for a job, but it's rough. :(

The sad part is, I was on the hook for a client support position at a risk mitigation firm in downtown Denver, and after 3 fantastic interviews and positive feedback, they decided not to hire anyone at all because their revenue for the quarter was far lower than they expected. :(
