since September, I feel like a bum, just been going gym, watching downloaded TV series, watching movies and playing videogames to pass the time.

Know the feeling. Not something i enjoy. Especially don't appreciate the way they treat you as if you're aren't trying *sigh*. I fill my days with pretty much the same things, heh. Except without going to the gym...

Exactly. I even told my brother-in-law, who is actually has a degree, but is stuck in retail management, to try and get in with a temp firm - if he can get a 6 month gig, kiss retail goodbye.

Never get in with a Temp firm, they are criminals who practice a form of slavery.

That is what you'd be saying if you were a Temp for 2 years and then laid off... like me. Soon after I was laid off I got a job in QC management but couldn't accept the job without going though the same staffing agency that I had before. Now the company I work for is trying to buy out my contract from the staffing agency and are getting the run around because they (The Agency) want an extra 2 months for the 3 months that I have left.

Slavery I tells ya.

Been unemployed since December. To fill the time, it's been gaming, tv, friends, job searching, posting on GAF.

Things have been turning around though. Have an interview nextweek, had 3 interviews in the past month. *Crosses fingers*

Been unemployed since December 09 (was going to school). Should have gotten a job sooner, BUT I got offered a job today. HOORAY!! I will be working at Big Lots. Not very extravagant, but its a job and it's hard to find a job here in San Jose after being unemployed for a year.

SOOOOOOOOO YATTA!!

I'm working as a Bouncer for the moment. Not many hours but I really enjoy the job. Besides that I'm waiting back on a call from Futureshop for a merchandiser position and am taking a correspondence course to prepare me for taking the A+ exams.

After getting a little experience under my belt, I'll hopefully go for a few more certs but what I would like to do eventually is open up a hobby shop.

Some companies now won't even look at a resume if the person doesn't currently have a job already.

Can anyone tell me the rational behind this?? This makes absolutely no sense.

It's like purposefully going out with girls that currently have a boyfriend.

And it's the same concept of loyalty on why it's so stupid - if this new job can pull you away from a job you're currently in, what makes them think you will stay when a better opportunity comes along?

edit- to everyone - don't give up searching!!

I would love to work security but you need to get that SIA license which I cannot afford at the moment. I have 2 friends who do security, 1 who just chills in an office playing games, watching films and etc. Another who works as a door man who enjoys taking down drunks.

Your only technically unemployed if your actively looking for a job.

(I'm making no statement here about whether you are actively looking or not, just trying to clear up that all students without jobs don't qualify as unemployed)

Oh yeah, you're right, I forgot! (Macroeconomics class last Spring). I'm not in the work force :P

So during my interview for my new job they told me I'd be paid $9.00 an hour plus commission. I got my first paycheck and they are paying me $10 an hour plus commission, should I report it?

this was the worst for me. It wasn't a 24-7 thing, but it took a lot of planning and revising and trial and error to figure out how to best pitch myself. I applied for a lot of positions I didn't really want in the first place...it was good practice for when I interviewed for the jobs I did want.

Just because your experience with one temp agency hasn't been the best, don't think that is how it is with all of them If it wasn't for that temp agency you wouldn't have the company you are working for interested in you at all. They put your foot in the door, that is what they are good for.

Them jerking you around right now sucks, but I would advise anyone to try a temp agency to get your foot in the door at a company.

Was unemployed for about 8 months, felt like shit....

Finally landed a job, work security at a hospital. Pays decent enough, still getting an engineering degree though, but damn I do know how it feels =/

Been unemployed for a year now. I just applied for a job with MTV and I'm honestly trying to keep my head above water.

Honestly, it's one thing to hate being unemployed, but when I think about how much my friend (also unemployed) and I are desperate to move in together it just makes me feel a whole lot worse that it feels out of reach.

Engineering is the shit.

Lol, it's pretty good. I enjoy technology, my major is in Electronics Engineering, but with a focus on Lasers and Photonics.

So it's a B.S. in Electronics Engineering with specialization in Lasers and Photonics.

My girlfriend just got hired on full time at UT after working as a temp on campus in the same position. 128 people applied in like 3-4 days that it was posted.

I've been in the same position for about 5 weeks now.. lasted longer than expected but has to be over soon. At least we have a steady income for sure now though, woohoo! Hoping to find a position in the same school as I've been temping as I've managed to create some good will due to my current placement.

Can't recommend it enough!

Could be joining soon. I did something I'm sure I'm not supposed to do with a customer(Even though Managers have directly okay this stuff many times) that I was dealing with for over half an hour(Last one when my shift ended, it was crowded then, not when my shift ended).

My wife graduated in August of last year and has been aggressively hunting for work since. She volunteers at a pro bono legal services place so she's at least getting exposure and hands on experience, but work is just non existent. Maybe 4 or 5 interviews since August, two of them went well enough but she didn't get them. Glowing recommendations from the city's main organizer of pro bono work for lawyers and university professors and still not enough.
Advice to any students, stay out of the legal field, at least around Tennessee.

After being laid off at the end of October I spent months trying to get something, no luck at all. There was no chance of me getting into my old line of work and nobody else is hiring.

My sister in law has been looking too and we decided to start up an ebusiness. It's not exactly earth shattering but as long as it's paying the bills I'm happy. Being on the dole and treading water was doing me no good at all.

The way I see it even if it completely crashes it's still better than constant applying for jobs and constant knockbacks. I think people who haven't been unemployed don't understand how much hard work it is and how mentally and physically draining it can be. When I was working I certainly didn't. I do now!

All I can say is the best of luck to you all and I hope you all get something soon.

I recently saw a story on the news that said the new trend for job hiring is to get people who already have jobs. The idea behind this is that if a company is doing bad, but was able to keep this person on, then they are worth hiring at their company. It's kind of disturbing, but my wife was able to easily get a job for 10k more at a different company, and I think part of it was because she was still employed at the time.

Well, the other part of it is it can be used by HR people as a filtering tool. They get so many resumes and they don't know how to weed through them, so they start there. It's sort of bullshit.

Over the past several months I've gone from aiming high(er) by applying for professional-level office jobs to going for more realistic options like administration or HR, then to "good" service jobs (FedEx/UPS, banks, city jobs), and now I'm back to desperately applying for practically anything in retail, grocery, call centers, etc... No one wants me. I've managed to get two interviews in six months (passed over both times) and tons of rejected or ignored phone calls and emails. Even temp agencies don't want me. I don't know what else to do.

This morning I finally get an invitation from Macy's to schedule an interview, but their hiring website is messed up and there's no way to select a day or time. The HR phone system won't let me talk to anyone who can actually help, all they're offering is to re-send the email which just leads back to the same broken scheduling site... I'm about to put my head through the wall.

Looks like I'll be joining the unemployed masses again. :(

I've been working for 3 years, before that I was out for 4 months. All signs point to being out of work in about 3-4 weeks.

I'm trying to work the contacts to see if I can get into another place...

Anyone need a consumer research analyst in NYC? :)

i'm on two and a half months now. starting to finally look, but i have no pressure to find work as i am financially secure for about two years if i really wanted to take that much time off. but i don't. so hopefully i can find something at a place i really want to be.

After a month of searching and roughly 25 different apps across my two closest cities, I get a call in the middle of Quadfest from Bellacino's. I'm so happy and very thankful about it. I'll be going home soon (two more weeks of classes) so I'm going to try and work at a carwash that's near my house in addition to Bellacino's. I'm trying to make bank this summer!

Keep trying guys, keep your minds occupied and don't give up.

Hell, I may be joining your ranks soon. My company ain't doing well...

It took 3 and a half months, but I found something. No unemployment during this time either (yep - didn't qualify,) so I'm glad my sister took me in temporarily or I would've been down at the Salvation Army. She's been an immense help and I'm not going to wear out my welcome.

I'm also going back for a degree in Accounting. Mixing is great and all, but it's not paying anyone's rent... Or their school loans... Or even their car note. It's one of the least-respected professions in existence; it's always been tough to get in but now it's as close to nigh-fucking-impossible as you can imagine.

Oh well. Either it's a gift or a curse to hear the certain way that it requires. I'll take the former and move on.

Why are you being laid off?

looks like i may also be joining... serious shakedowns at the company make it seem like i might get the boot july 1.

nose + grindstone = ???

I just had an interview for an entry level iPhone development job. They didn't ask me to write a single line of code, or to work through any type of programming problem. Not even a fizzbuzz or something simple like that. They then told me I didn't get the job because I didn't have enough technical expertise.

*facepalm

Well, i've been looking for a new job for the past few months with no luck. If anyone knows of anyone looking for a good programmer in the Toronto area, shoot me in a line.

You tried ubisoft? ;)

Toronto is still reeling from the recession. Our main jobs were production and financial. Production is taking a beating cause of the high dollar, jobs outsourced, and the crappy US economy. Financial...hell every financial sector took a hit though the fucking banks here still make billions; it's just they didn't make enough billions.

An experienced programmer shouldn't have too much trouble though imo. Lots of game companies and start ups and database developer positions.

Nope, haven't tried Ubi. I did apply at Koei years ago but didn't get very far in the process.

Only been unemployed for a little more than a month, but it freaks me out. I really don't like asking my family for helping me pay rent. Still glad I quit my crappy barista job though.
It's kind of weird, I need a job to be productive with my school work but at the same time, having a job interferes with the amount of effort i can put into my homework.

Graphic Designer/Illustrator/Animator. I've done everything from Flash games for Disney Channel to Icon work for Windows 7. About 8 years experience using Photoshop/Flash/Illustrator.

Was unemployed for a year (feb 2009-April 2010) then got pickedup for a job at a small game dev studio. Was going well till HQ called in and decided to change management. Management decides to axe the current creative crew. I was there for about 3-4 weeks.

Now its been 1 year since then. Still unemployed. Benefits ran out in January, living off of my savings. Can't get a in at anything I applied for. *frustrated sigh*

For anyone that's been in the job market for some time, how do things look in better economic times, so to speak? Do jobs come easier, more openings, etc. It's hard to imagine something different than this, as it's been the norm since I entered the full-time job market just recently. It's rather bleak.

Wishing everyone the best of luck.

No but I'm severely underemployed. Honestly fuck this job, I want a career, but there's just nothing out there right now

RETIRE ALREADY YOU GODDAMN BABY BOOMERS

Before 2008, it wouldn't take too long to get a new job for me. Maybe a month or two between freelance gigs/contracts. Now a days.... ugh... And like a poster above mentioned, no one even wants to give you a skills test. Its mostly hard to get pass HR unless you know someone on the inside.

Nope. I was unemployed for 2 years. 2 fucking years. But finally landed a decent job last December. It was rough going for a while, so I feel ya.

JCX said:
About to graduate, and also be unemployed. Not excited.

Keep your head up I graduated in December with no job, landed one last week and start in June. Unemployment sucks, but enjoy your free time, and work hard once you find a job.

As an addendum to this, I talked to HR twice more -- "we'll look into it and call you back!" Never received any calls. -- and went to the store in person to see if I could schedule the interview and they can't/won't. Was told it's all handled by a company in Florida who takes the interviews scheduled online and forwards it along with your application and resume to the store managers, and there's no way around this which is completely insane to me. So Macy's actually thought my resume was good enough to warrant further discussion, but will not speak to me unless I can find some way to go through their messed-up site first.

The person who gets this job better fucking appreciate it since I'm never going to get my shot, apparently. Assholes.

Have you tried different browsers when accessing their HR website? Some career sites I've visited will work fine in something like IE but won't work at all in other browsers.

Employed currently but only part-time as my hours were cut when my previous store closed and I was forced to take severance pay or transfer.

I have two interviews this week. Both are for leadership training programs with two different companies. Tomorrow is a phone interview with one and Wednesday is a face-to-face with the other. The kicker is that the second company has interviewed me TWICE before for two different positions!

The position on Wednesday is by far a fantastic job but I need to somehow ace this interview. Something isn't going right previously that needs fixed. Any advice?
