I officially changed jobs from keyholder at GameStop to Assistant Store Manager and Communications Director at a local video game shop in Ohio! I got an hour boost and pay boost too! Keep your heads up everyone!

I just lost my part-time job, as a shirt and lettering graphic designer! I've got no money, and no prospects either! (Felt the need to balance out the optimism, sorry. I'll be back on the up by tomorrow probably, the job was minimum wage garbage after all.)

Some great news, after 2 years of sitting around watching movies, smoking weed and playing video games all day, i have been told a company will interview me next time they are taking people on.

This company is one of they packing food into premade meal packs(i'm a working class fella so this job is up my street)

this is the type of job were people leave and join everyday, thank god i think i'm going to get this.

Just in time for me and my girlfriend moving into our own place.

In the software section they have to pay to post jobs, so spam isn't too much of a concern there. That's how I found the job I'm starting on Monday.

Congrats! :)

How are you liking the new job?

Mikasangelos said:
well yeah. Actually they told him exactly what it was, Hell they told everyone that got layed off what it was specifically.

For my father inlaw it was a unpaid balance of $100 for home owner association fees that apparently werent paid for so the Attorney who handles the funds put a lien on his home. But my father inlaw has a carbon copy of the check he wrote for that $100, Attorney said this past week thats hes sorry he lost the job and that he prolly lost the check.

WTF?!?!?!?!

Another guy got layed off because he had a $90 unpaid library fee.

>:(
Fuck that. It seems almost criminal to fire someone over a $100 check. That would make me rage.

Forgot about this thread, Wanted to say that I have a job now! (since 3 weeks ago). Funny thing is I didn't find it, my friend phoned me and said "hey my boss said we can take on a few guys and I can recommend you if you want."

I know reading that can piss some people off but that can teach you to keep contact with friends and family who have jobs. Talk to them, you never know.

Thats how i got my one day summer job only on fridays. My mom worked for that company as a cleaner and they needed some guys for making up beds.
Man i could have worked fulltime 10 weeks if i just put down no night shifts.
But fucked that summer job up.

Actually most of my jobs i landed was because of my parents last summer fulltime job was via my dad who knew someone at work who worked did it 2 years before i came there
and recommended me. Now im first on the list but economy is bad and they dont have summer jobs this year.

All i need to do is get a driver licenses and a complete new world opens up for you of jobs offer. Hope i can leave those physical labor jobs behind after getting bachelor computer science degree.

Hope to start my own company would love to have my own gamestudio.

Whelp, apparently my EI ran out as of a week ago. I wondered why my payment was only half. I thought I had another month left atleast.

Thankfully though, I did well enough in my interview on Tuesday that I will be brought back in for a final interview on Monday. I also have to do an online assessment tomorrow.

Thank. Fucking. God.

Damn, and I thought asking for minimum wage + a dollar was a bit much. :/

Congrats! You're finally getting off the dole!

I must have been crazy to quit my job and I was going to take some time off but an opportunity came by that I could not pass up. I would not have seen it if I did not make an extra effort to look every day.

Then again I'm a cook so there are restaurants opening up all the time especially in Los Angeles.

After 1 year in UnemployedGAF, I finally landed a job with an IT consulting company last week and am currently working on ETL Support for Tractor Supply Co. Mission accomplished.

Just get out there and keep looking. I met these guys at a university career fair, did well at the interviews, was invited to an on-site interview, did okay there but was passed over initially... And then they called me back 2 months later regarding an opening that they felt was more in line with my qualifications. Two phone/skype interviews later and I've got my own place and a start on a real career.

EDIT: Felt like reading over everything in this thread that was posted since the last time I checked it out.

That is pretty awesome.

I started working for Dell here in Lincoln, NE. They apparently can't hire people quick enough to fill the client support service desks they're starting up. I know people in this thread have mentioned a willingness to move, so you might want to look into this if you have ANY tech support or customer service experience. I was interviewed within days of applying, and had the job offer within a week of that.

http://jobs.dell.com/lincoln/customer-support/jobid1590927-client-technical-support-associate-jobs

For the record, this is not a call center for the people buying a dell at the store. You'd be a remote tier 1 help desk for an actual company. My account covers a large hospital in Los Angeles, for example.

If anyone is actually interested and wants more info, post or send me a PM. I feel your pain, unemployed-GAF.

I just came out of unemployment this week. In the negative $600 bucks until that my first paycheck. Hahaha fun stuff. Even more so I'm trying to raise funds for Japan and fullfilling my wifes dream before I deploy... and it doesn't go so well when you have no funds yourself to dedicate to the cause. My page for fund raising is here

if any of you care. However since it feels like most of you are in the same boat I doubt you guys need another sob story.

i took the drug screening last Friday. i havent heard anything back from the employer. i havent smoked in months and i passed the home drug kit so i dont know. im going to call tomorrow and see if there is anything. So depressed right now. i dont think ill ever get a job ever again. Its just about time to eat a bullet.

To recap, I got hired at bestbuy but they took over a month to actually start me. During that time gap I've been applying all over the place. As luck would have it I get offered a job with my university tutoring which starts at 9 a hour, and at the same time Best Buy calls me back and gives me my first day of work at 9.50 a hour.

Suggestions extremely welcome.

Do both?

Don't bite off more than you can chew with your course load vs. how much you have to work to make ends meet, and make school your highest priority.

Do whichever has more hours. But put school first.

This sucks. This are not good times to get a job, specially in Spain. I have an Industrial Engineering degree, probably one of the best to get a job, but still, almost no company is willing to hire a guy with no experience in this times. Shit, most companies can't even hire people :( .

I've done only two interviews from May, my father has contacted a friend in a big company, but I think it's a dead end. If nothing comes up September-October, I will seriously consider getting a job in UK.

Wait, you're 20, and you've NEVER had a job?

Jesus Christ, is this normal these days? I've had a job since I was 15.

I don't know, but I just turned 25 and have never had a full-time paying job, at least not the conventional kind where you drive somewhere and punch a clock every morning at 9. In the three years I've been out of collage I've done contractor work, but since all my contractors went out of business I've had nothing. Even just finding a day job until I get settled on my actual career path is bringing up nothing.

I look at lists of jobs every day through local feeds in multiple categories and those big aggregate websites but never find anything that I'm qualified for. I mean I have skills and some experience in certain areas, but not the "minimum five years of experience" that every job seems to ask for. Finding entry level positions for some reason is the hardest part.

I think I also suck at interviews. Almost every one I've been to has asked what kinds of work-related situations I've experience previously, and my answer is almost always "none" or at least none that applies to that specific job.

By contrast my brother is 32, two kids, and hasn't had a full-time job since college. I'm not sure he even knows what he wants to do in the future anymore. It's actually like that for a lot of my friends. Some are in temporary positions, but I don't think any of my close friends knows where they want to be in five years.

Tutoring job. No question. Retail work is the worst. Plus, you'll get to meet more of your fellow students.

Christ, that insane! what's the minimum wage in the US? I'm pretty sure its $16 for anyone over 18 in Australia.

Handed in an application at this awesome looking tourism place. They were pretty excited at my being able to speak Japanese, but kinda looked at me funny when they noticed I only had one job in the work experience section, and I stopped working there in 2010. I'd like to be hopeful, but it probably better for my esteem if I'm not.

Agreed. There really should be a website for just entry-level than "keyword, entry-level" and having to go through thousands of "two years+ experience with..." that's not entry-level, dudes. :/

Going on 4-5 years unemployed, and frankly I'm getting to the point of just giving up.

Living in my city is more expensive than living in New York, London, Hong Kong or Tokyo. And you've probably never heard of it :'( I didn't actually consider that though, good point.

Not to be a dick, but you said previously you'd been looking for a job for over a year now. If you've been seriously throwing yourself out there and interviewing, why would you even put yourself into a situation that would jeopardize your chances of landing a position? Though if this was just a urine test, and you haven't smoked in months, you have nothing to worry about.

Probably was. When I went into get tested I offered some of my hair because I didn't like the idea of going in a cup, but I was told that hair testing is super expensive and it's almost never done.

Edit: Yes, I know hair is a much longer measurement for drugs. I am outing myself out as one of those square non drug using guys.

117,000 jobs were apparently created in July, but when I look in the classifieds, when I go to store to store asking for a job, when I go to the staffing agencies I use, and when I check online daily I'm not seeing an uptick in anything.
well i mean consider how big america is and how many people are looking for jobs. this is more like "hey we didn't lose another katrillion jobs, yay!"

good luck to all looking

Not only that, but 11,000 jobs were lost by Borders closing alone. That doesn't even count other companies massively cutting workers.

Ignore the experience qualifications and apply anyway. Make them say no. Who knows, maybe they'll pick you because none of the other people applying have better qualifications than you do anyway.

If you have any kind of portfolio or personal projects that can demonstrate your relative skills for the position, make it a point to talk about them. I was able to use a scholarship database project I created for my university during my senior level software engineering classes as a selling point for myself when applying for my current job. It wasn't "work experience" but it was certainly relevant.

2.5 hour interview tomorrow morning, since its so long i'm thinking its just a big introduction sorta thing. (and hopefully not 2.5 hours getting grilled in a room)

Not sure how "giving up" could be perceived as a good idea...
Also, don't worry about those experience pre-reqs... apply to the jobs asking for 2 years of experience anyway if they really strike a cord with you.

Had been underemployed since September 2009 when my freelance work got cut back, and basically unemployed since about July 2010. Decided when my freelance work was trimmed that I'd go back to accounting, which I have a degree in and 2 years experience. Meanwhile the missus decided we'd move to Melbourne so she could be with her family.

Went through the whole rigmarole of applying for every job that came up, wrote canvassing letters to more than 30 firms, and always seemed to get into the last 3-4 people they were choosing from, and not getting chosen.

Most of the time I figured we just moved at the wrong time, since accountants generally hire in August-September in Australia, but I'm told that there is basically an oversupply of accountants in Melbourne - most jobs I applied for had 300+ applicants. It was a total contrast compared to a few years ago when I worked in regional Queensland, where there was a dire shortage of accountants and the firm I worked for was offering us money to find people.

Anyway, I was offered (and accepted) a job doing self-managed superannuation funds (basically like 401ks in principle), which was one area of accounting which I genuinely enjoyed.

I hope I don't have to go through the job hunting experience again. Good luck to everyone in here.
