Anyone here played Commandos videogame series? One of Eidos' best.

I played the first one Behind Enemy Lines and the second one Destination Berlin. It was the biggest timesink ever. The production values of the games was pretty good. The games dripped with WW2 atmosphere, and had a very Hollywood feel to it which I loved. The payoff satisfaction you get after completing a mission is only rivaled by Demon's/Dark Souls series. You control a group of Commandos: a Green Beret with stealth killing skills, a Sapper (demolition expert), a Marine (expert with water movement), Spy with sneaking skills and Driver for driving missions. You control your team in real time, hide in bushes waiting for the right time to attack. A single level can take hours to finish and requires perfect execution. Here's a gameplay bit from the first game (my favorite).

Like I said, the game oozes atmosphere. It felt you were smack dab in the middle of the war. I miss these games. Is there anything comparable out there on the market? Can we see a triumphant return of the series in the near future?

goddamn classics

There's been a few games like it since then, most notably the western-themed Desperados games, Helldorado being the newest one (from 2007 compared to these late 90s/early 2000s titles).

A quick google search shows that Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood also gets mentioned, but I've never played that one.

I loved this game, I really need to get around playing it again and actually finishing it. I've heard Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood is a similar game that's actually very good.

Eidos was the publisher. The games were developed by the Spanish studio Pyro Studios. They're timeless classics imo, some of the greatest software to come out from Spain.

Sad to see this "Commandos genre" dying out. I wish we could see more games with the technology we have now.

Man these games were hard. I usually gave up on them but still would spend many hours trying to pass a single lvl. i still believe enemy cheated a lot.

I have heard a TPS or FPS commando also came out

making this sort of isometric drawn art style was smart. the graphics are timeless.

I mean, this looks like something i'd still be amazed by if it came out today.

Loved the first and second one with passion. I still remember me and my friend beating Commandos 2 demo time and time again. When we got the game we couldn't believe it, it was damn good. I miss this franchise.

Ironically the last entry in the series looks older than the early games

but hey, gotta chase those COD2 sales.

one of my forgotten all time favorites. spent hours and hours playing each level. i cant offhand think of any other game that ive played or seen that was quite like commando.

I used to love the first couple of levels of Commandos 2 for PS2 (I think it's a PS2 game). It got hard on the third or so area so I never actually got very far but I really liked what I played of it.

of course I did, the first one is very much one of my favourite RTS

Sir Woolridge (the Sniper) was THE badass

Which should be great because it's a point and click, and therefore quite doable on tablets.

But they won't. =(

I remember playing the first game until it got a part way into the middle of the game where it got ultra hard, like punching your balls difficulty. I thought the game was retarded then and never touched the franchise again which is too bad because i heard cool things about the later games but man fuck that mission. I dunno the whole thing seemed way too trial and error for my tastes

I love Commandos. Men of Courage was my first ever PC game and the game that got me into Command and Conquer. Man, some good shit right here.

Kinda want the series back? even tho they'll probably fuck it up and make it F2P with Micro transactions so nevermind.

My father, who was in his 50s at the time this game released, absolutely loved this series. He's spent dozens of hours on individual levels trying to find as many possible methods of completion as he could. Between this and the original C&C, I think my dad would be set for life without boredom.

I really have the urge to replay 1&2, and try 3 for the first time, now.

I've never played the first one. Loved the second one though! But man, that game was challenging. I never even got past the first level in the 3rd one. I beat the second one, but i probably cheated.

God Commandos 2 had some absolutely amazing levels. The first one was monstrous in size.

I thought 3 was the weakest of the series. Too many levels were a little too "actiony". But it was still a fantastic game. The FPS though, ugh. Why?

Do it!

Have fond memories of the first game. I not so recently bought whatever was available on GOG for a trip down memory lane. Either I was much better at the game as a kid or my cousins turned on cheats when it was my turn to play because the game is hard as heck.

I loved these games, though I don't remember much of them since I played them as a kid, IIRC.

Also, though probably more similar to Jagged Alliance in mechanics, Silent Storm was a game that I latched onto after playing Commandos.

Spanish economy is in the shits, games like Commandos have become niche fare. Not rocket science. At least they still exist

Classic fucking games that not enough people played. I remember being awestruck by the quality of Commandos 2 since I had barely heard anything about it from gaming magazines and friends. Such great, great games. I'd back the shit out of a Wasteland 2-style Commandos reboot on Kickstarter.

Great games, you can get the first 4 games for $4 here, all Steamkeys (along with 4 other games)

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. THANKS!

I still remember the time when I had all of my men set up perfectly, and then, with pinpoint precision, I took out 5 guys within 2 seconds on a level I was having a lot of trouble with. Still one of my fondest gaming memories. Was just so awesome.

DANGER! DANGER! DONT BUY COMMANDOS ON STEAM. The original game is fucked and runs at double speed on modern hardware. Buy it from gog.com instead.

The lines are still engrained on my brain. Yes Sir. Right away. Sir. ALARM ALARM

Great games and I'll replay them now just because of this thread.

Fantastic series. Now if only some indie developers tried to tackle this kind of game instead another puzzle-platformer.

amazing games, but they were much too hard for kiddie me.
I'd love to replay them, but the steam versions are probably cut here :/

looks still gorgeus on these screenshots, I didnt know there was a 3d sequel
