Anyone know the name of the cartoon movie that inspired Zelda: The Wind Waker?

I remember it being mentioned somewhere once, but the reference has slipped my mind ages ago. I know that it was from the 60s, though

It's older than that. Even the character designs are identical to what can be found in the game. It's "[something] Prince" or something like that

Mr. Miyamoto: Actually, we do have some anime fans on the team, but we also have fans of particular movie directors too. We have a mixture of people that helped create this title. Even if they wanted to make a game based on someone's style, we probably wouldn't let them.

"My Neighbor Totoro" impressed me with what they did with the style. That's something I like to look at, to see something within an existing media that is creative and different. That's what we try to do with our products, to take something people have seen and try to do something new with it. It's when you're really able to do something revolutionary within a media that's existed for some time that I think you're able to shock and startle people. That's usually how it is for me. "Laputa" was another one that impressed me.

I know the one you're thinking of, though, but I cant find it.

It's LITTLE PRINCE & THE EIGHT-HEADED DRAGON (1963, WANPAKU OJI NO OROCHI TAIJI)

Wow. This IS interesting. I recall watching a cartoon with the same art when I was a kid way back when. In black and white. Some sort of space cartoon. Man I loved it. I'm thinking it must have been by the same people. The art is that close.

Yep, no doubt about it, that is the insperation for WInd waker right there.

Ah, this thread reminds me of the awesome art and style of WW. Nintendo should've screw the tasteless masses and went ahead with Wind Waker II.

It is going to be intresting to see which Zelda game's graphics are going to hold up in a few years.

The general look of WW's art is very well done IMO and the finished product is a joy to look at. If I must list any faults it would be that the proportions of the 'standard' NPCs didn't seem right, to me

If anyone can share more images from this film (or a clip) I will pleasure myself while watching them

i guessing the chances of finding a torrent to this obscure movie are very low. i've searched for the english and japanese title on the major torrent sites without success :/

I think it's a given that Wind Waker is going to hold up much better, because of how artistically distinct it is to pretty much every other game(cel-shaded or not) out there. New Zelda just looks like an upgraded OoT.
