AP: Clinton clinches Democratic Nomination

that's how to demonstrate how much your vote counts - get a bunch of superdelegates to jump to your side and announce you suddenly have enough for the nomination the day before any of the dirty public gets to vote.

why do superdelegates exist?
What the hell? She is far ahead in pledged delegates and popular vote. If we didn't have supers she would have already won.

I honestly love the system we have right now.

It gave us the first black president.

It will give us the first female president.

The democratic party deserves a lot more credit than people give it online.

Yup agree . Sometimes online it becomes a fight between the far left and mid left or centre left and ppl forget the far right exists ...

So what sort of numbers does Hillary need to post to get the pledged delegate overall majority? Is it possible to reach it at all? Just wondering.

She'd need like 70% of the remaining votes. It's not impossible but it's stretching reality in ways that are only possible with Bernie math.

why do superdelegates exist?

Superdelegates were the only shot Bernie had at winning this, but the revolution didn't happen. They sided with the candidate that won the most delegates and the popular vote. And now we will see Bernie at Comic Cons every year talking about what could have been.

Bernie is hopelessly behind in pledged delegates. If superdelegates didn't exist, she would be clinching the nomination today. It's only because of superdelegates that he can pretend there's still a chance.

I get the impression a lot of Bernie supporters are misinformed and don't realize she has a popular vote and pledged delegate lead. That it isn't the supers that caused her to win.

My sister and her boyfriend got Bernie Sanders tattoos.

Good luck to them, and all those who sail in them.

Anecdotal especially because I'm in Canada, but I have friends that refuse to believe she has a vote lead. S4p is a crazy echo chamber where even math stops having any real meaning.

Almost every primary in history was decided before the last state voted, this is nothing new and it doesn't have much to do with delegates and it would've happened even without them by the end of the day today.

And the goal of the superdelegates is to prevent someone like Trump from winning the nominee, we can argue about whether or not it's a good mechanism, but in practice, they have never went against the will of the voters and they're not going to do it this cycle either, so that discussion is mostly philosophical.

Any of the dirty public? I'm quite sure I, as a card carrying member of the dirty public, voted months ago.

Listening to NPR this morning and heard a Bernie supporter say "The math is irrelevant."

Um, ok! Get ready for a series of electoral disappointments for the rest of your life if that's what you're sticking to.

It's bizarre. I have a two-year-old, so at least I'm used to dealing with this sort of mentality.

Edit: to be clear, because I don't want to shit on anybody, I'm just talking about the "math is irrelevant, just give me what I want" crowd.

Oh my, well we don't need any black holes forming on GAF, so I'll just be happy with what we've got :P
Edit: Spelling. Damn, where's my coffee?!?

What are you talking about? Hilary has been campaigning for a while in California. She did not want this announced yesterday. She's been waiting for today for a while now and has a big speech lined up for tonight because she was going to reach the number as soon as the polls close when she crushes him in New Jersey.

You seem confused about what actually happened here.

Clinton didn't tell them to do anything. The AP kept contacting superdelegates until they had confirmed such a number alongside Clinton's recent wins in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico that they could scoop everybody before the NJ and California primaries. In all honestly the Clinton campaign would have wanted to wait for the "dirty public" to vote.

The other person seems confused.

There are a total of 4,051 pledged delegates. Meaning a majority of pledged delegates is 2,026. Clinton has 1,812 pledged delegates.
She will easily reach a majority of pledged delegates after the remaining races are done. She only needs to get 31% of today's delegates to reach a majority of pledged.

There are another 715 unpledged superdelegate (votes).
That sums to a total of 4,766.
Making the magic number 2,383, which she reached today.

What she won't be able to do is reach a majority of all delegates with only pledged delegates, as it would require 80% of remaining delegates. But she doesn't have to.

Math is for the establishment.

Right, I seemed to have read that wrong and looked up the wrong numbers.

Ah! I see. So pledged delegate majority is not only in reach but almost certain. Overall majority has already been reached with supers. Overall without any supers cannot be reached realistically. Think I got it now. I was on top all of this back in like March and April but I stopped following cause it was effectively over.

Fucking awesome. Gonna be rad to see her win in November.

I can't wait to see Obama waging all out warfare on Trump. I hope Hillary and her advisers simply refuse to meet Trump on his disgusting terrain, but hammers him on every last bigoted, xenophobic, anti-American thing he has said. He's also an aspiring war criminal. Hillary needs to continue doing what she did in that brutal speech of hers, and continue to demonstrate the sheer immeasurable gulf between herself and that piece of shit with the fake hair. Anyone who supports Trump is by association racist as well, and there is no way one can say "Well I really just like his policies", since 99% of the time he has no truly detailed policies, and the ones he has detailed have been bizarre and nonsensical at best. So I hope any supporters of Trump internalize that, because they deserve to be insulted by association.

And good fucking riddance to that pest Bernie Sanders. What a pathetic candidate he turned into, and I hope as everyone confirms the AP story tonight and the entire Democratic establishments moves over to her column, that the media proceeds to suffocate him of all attention so that he's left alone with his petty, small-minded ego gazing into a mirror. Maybe he'll reflect, or maybe he'll try to blame everyone else but him for the reason his campaign was shitty, the reason he was comically unprepared for a zillion different interview questions of huge import that he essentially refused to ever learn from, the reason that the candidate himself was garbage. I'm sure it was DWS.

Obama called Bernie Sunday. I think he will drop out tonight

Congratulations to Clinton. I was never in doubt (I would've put down a sizeable bet 6 months ago on her if only intrade was still up...) - only ever critical of those that wanted to shut down the Sander's campaign out of misbegotten fear - for all his missteps in the last few months, he still represents a lot of the values that most of us would like to see championed - thankfully Clinton has a lot of overlap in many areas.

I reckon the fight for presidency is over. While Trump is in the headlines, it's only for show. Sanders was the real fight for Hilary... and even that in truth was less of a real fight (hers to lose), and more of a show of support for liberal values and a signal of the shift to come. People are ready for new faces... Clinton will ride out with the old guard over the next 4 to 8 years as we transition into an age of ever accelerating change.

The spirit of reconciliation!

I don't give a shit about reconciling with Bernie Sanders. He's a terrible candidate who ruined his entire message - one which I supported in spirit more than Hillary's, even - for pursuit of his personal egotistical ambitions the likes of which grew so out of control he started believing his own rhetoric. He started fabricating stories, stoked conspiracy theories and straight up bilked his supporters of money when he knew it was over (and he did it based on these same fabrications). Bernie is a shitty candidate, and I don't care if some of his supporters have trouble hearing that and are therefore more reticent to vote Hillary.

Because I actually am a student of history, and I know that these voters always come back to the fray anyway - the vast majority of them. Less Hillary 2008 voters said they would vote for Obama, and we know how that turned out. I am just a Democrat who is fed up with Bernie's bullshit, and who knows I (and Hillary) don't even need to work to get those votes back. They'll come on their own. I hope Hillary still tries to work for them, because that's what a good politician does ... but I'm not a politician. I'm just a voter.

I knew how bad Bernie had got when he stopped thanking voters in states that didn't go for him. That's just simple etiquette, and symbolically it meant a lot.

We'll see if his ego can handle that much. As long as he stops giving speeches pretending it's a contested convention now, like the weasley bullshit artist he is.

Here, we have an example of why there's a Bernie or Bust movement. If Trump were to win, it would be your fault. Specifically.

Obama called Bernie Sunday. I think he will drop out tonight

No way and I wouldn't expect him to. He's one week away from having the primaries actually over. He will get absolutely demolished in DC but I don't see a need for him to pull out before then. It gives him a good break point from his rhetoric as well.

I expect Obama to jump in tomorrow, but Bernie leaves next week

Here, we have an example of why there's a Bernie or Bust movement. If Trump were to win, it would be your fault. Specifically.

Why? Because those people are children who need their special feelings coddled with a gentle "there there, it'll be all right?"

We should be talking about this as a historical moment where there is now the first female presidential candidate for the major political parties, not delegate math :\

Here, we have an example of why there's a Bernie or Bust movement. If Trump were to win, it would be your fault. Specifically.

There will be a Trump presidency because the mean man called Bernie out for being a bullshit artist.

That right there should go to show how serious these people are. Am I supposed to be taking them seriously, is that what this comment was meant to inspire?

Fortunately, most Bernie supporters are not nutjobs and believe in issues that are actually important and can impact millions of people were Trump to be president, and so I live not in fear of this hilarious "Bernie or Bust" movement. They will fade into dust and nobody will remember them or their candidate in a few months. Thank Christ for that.

When will the #bernieorbusters realize that no one gives a shit if their stupid feelings get hurt? There's not enough of you to be relevant, no on cares about you.

For the Sanders campaign the goalpost constantly moving with respect to timing.

"Super's shouldn't give away their position at the beginning of the race so they don't influence the outcome"

now

"Super's shouldn't announce their position at the end of the race since they can always technically switch their vote by the convention"

Also, Super delegates are undemocratic...until Bernie needs them to win undemocratically.

I'm still confused on how the fuck you go to trump from sanders. Literal opposite on the political spectrum this race. It's like none of their platforms even come into the equation.

Based on what they've stated, they have a few points that are similar.

Trade imbalance, issues with Wall Street, issues with the "Establishment", opposition to the Iraq war, dislike of Karl Rove.

The Bernie or Bust movement will just be the PUMAs of this election. They'll be totally irrelevant and will end up supporting the republican candidate come next election.

I for one am totally shocked the party establishment early on went with the person with a life-long devotion to the party goals and agenda over someone who has intentionally distanced themselves, used the party resources only for self-interest, and has primarily been nothing more than a critic for several decades. It's absolutely mind-blowing how that happened.

It's almost as if politics are sometimes more about teamwork and coalition rather than hero worship - but all my TV shows tell me otherwise, so something must be wrong.

Is he? Can Drumpf possibly say anything worse than he already has?

We'll see what happens when he's constantly on the defensive from having his nonsense called out instead of vaguely poked at as it was during the primaries. In the last week alone he's shown he does not respond well on the defensive and instead dug himself deeper.

That's right Hilary voters, no need to come out and vote on the 7th, simply stay home and chill we got this wrapped up.

She didn't announce this, she downplayed it after the AP proactively sought the info from officially uncommitted super delegates.

She won in the popular vote btw, just like Obama did before her super delegates switched to him in 2008.

She also has a 3 million vote lead and a majority of pledged delegates. Her support is not exclusive to "the backing of the party establishment."

Had Bernie won more pledged delegates, the supers and the party establishment would've shifted their support to him, as they moved from Hillary to Obama in 2008. He didn't, so they didn't.

haha oh man it's literally the reddit BernieForPresident line in all their topics. That's what you were referencing, right? As if Hillary voters staying home on the 7th would even change this at this point lol

god the sheer delusion of these folk
