Way too expensive and the design is kind of awful. I was hoping this thing would correct a lot of the issues I have with the Android Wear line... but nope!

Price doesn't bother me so much as the iPhone 5 req. I only have a 4S and don't have a contract, so this would be fucking expensive. V2 will probably be a much better device anyways.

some people prefer rectangular some people prefer round. They went with rectangular. V2 might bring a round version too

People's own preferences was my point as to why this will not be successful. Individualized look is important to people who are buying what amounts to a fashion statement, and is why a single style is a detriment.

Aiii

So not worth it
It's weird how people are shocked at the price. It's Apple for starters and I don't think the $350 tag is anything that will stop people from buying it.

Having to also buy the 800 dollar companion device will deter a lot of people though.

They never mentioned battery life at all? They could have scored a really big point there since all android watches have horrendous battery life.

I like this better (and only $200 for the base model).

Watch brands can charge hundreds to thousands on branded armbands, even those not made from precious metals or endangered species. I'm sure Apple has done their homework.

Somehow I doubt people that paid hundred to thousands of branded watches are interested in a smartwatch.

So no built in GPS.

Does it track activity like those fitness bands?

I guess it tracks heartrate. When it's released I'd like to see some reviews and comparisons of the heart rate monitor feature. I didn't think wrist heart rate monitors were very accurate compared to chest strap heart rate monitors.

If it can be nearly as accurate as a chest strap heart rate monitor, I'd probably want it despite it's price.

My opinion from the Event thread:
I actually really like the design. The NFC and fitness stuff looks fantastic. Not sure why people expected this device to be completely independent of the iPhone. It's not feasible to pack in all the internals and a sufficient battery into a "watch friendly" form factor. At least... not yet. I really like the inclusion of NFC for payments.

My only complaint is the limited biometrics. I was hoping for more. The price sounds about right relative to history and market standards.

Apple isn't a watch brand though.

And I find it hard to see this gliding into the aspirations of people who buy more expensive watches. IMO it's too much of a 'tech toy'. You would not whip this out in a meeting when the rest of the room is filled with Omegas/Pateks/Rolexs. Or would you?

I can see it as maybe being an aspirational thing for younger people though. Maybe. But they're exactly the ones who don't spend a lot of money on watches, indeed, they're the ones for whom smart phones more or less rendered watches obsolete.

I was trying to say that Apple is going to charge large sums for various Apple branded armbands for their smartwatch.

edit: for example, the basic version probably comes with a plastic armband. Add leather, $50. Want steel mesh? $100. And so on and so forth.

Yea there's probably a reason for that.

My guess is that it's not finalized and they're still trying to make it work with more than a day's worth of battery life. Why announce when they could potentially get more? Rumors have it that they were disappointed in not being able to get more than 3 days of battery life and only have 1+ which is on par with Samsung if not, slightly better but nothing earth shattering.

So much for fans saying a half assed Apple Watch would look better than the 360.

It's so far behind it hurts.

It's just a bad design... I know, aesthetic is subjective but I'd have a hard time believing the majority of people in the market for such a piece of technology would find that attractive.

I stopped wearing a watch about 2 years ago. I wore one for so long mainly because I just got used to it being part of my attire.

Now I almost always have a cell phone on me (which I use primarily just to check the time, lol), and otherwise my car and computers all have the time displayed convenietly.

The watch just chafed, caught on things, and was just one more thing to remember. It finally broke and I just never bothered to get it fixed.

Those aren't comparable because those are hand assembled from hundreds of tiny components.

This price is comparable to a high-end GPS watch and Samsung's smartwatches, however.

I thought this design was supposed to frighten the Swiss watch makers?

It looks like an iPod mini with a strap on it :/

Not exactly groundbreaking stuff there.

I think the design was quite fashionable in the videos they had prepared but I'm still to be sold on the actual use of the Apple Watch.

In many cases, such as twitter, I can just pull out my phone for a better experience and some features came across as quite gimicky.

Smart watches will never fly. Its like making one or two type of shirts, doesnt work. You need hundreds of different styles.

Who are these clowns?

Put an apple symbol next to the word Watch, and they've got their dicks in one hand, their wallets in the other.

They hadn't even seen the damn thing before they were out of their seats applauding.

Naw, most high end shit is machine assembled. Rolex makes 2000 watches a day with 2800 employees.

Is anyone genuinely shocked that such a device would not need an iPhone. People aren't going to look at this as I want the Apple Watch so I need to buy an iPhone too. They're going to be iPhone owners who get an Apple Watch to compliment it. It's no different than needing a $600 Android phone for an Android Wear device.

Reiterating some of my thoughts from the other thread:

Aesthetically, I think a few of the variations look fine, but I did expect better from Apple. Some of the variations look really bad imo.

I really like the idea of taptic feedback and I think the dial is a good differentiating factor from other smart watches. I also really like the live sketching.

Pressure sensitivity is cool.

Not sure how I feel about the UI. Not blowing me out of the water and some of it looks questionable in usage but maybe it works better that it looks.

Starting at $350 for what I assume will be the cheapo-ist of the smaller watches is way too much. I think ALL the smart watches need to stay in the $200-$300 zone for the mid-range version. Anything above should be some premium luxury jewelry type watch, not your baseline pricing. It will sell anyway though because it's Apple lol.

All in all, I think it looks like a perfectly good 1st gen smart watch but nothing I'd be missing by getting one of the AndroidWear watches. Especially for that price.

Three things ...

1) Can it be flipped? If not, no can use as a lefty. I'd assume they're not this dumb.

2) Does their literature show off all the available watch faces? Because the traditional ones shown thus far are pretty ugs. Switzerland should worry my ass.

3) What is the display tech?

The feature-set seems decent enough. But I'm pretty disappointed in the look. Some of the band and materal combos are alright, but none of them are really particularly great. And that seems to be a problem given they are going all in on this being a watch and not a more general smart device or whatever.

Yup. I made a topic with those pics several months back. A lot of people liked the concept, and others hated it. I would have def. picked one up had it looked remotely close to this.

I remember that thread! Count me as a supporter. Shame variety is only really found in the bands with these watches.
