So I am on the fence about the iPad 2. I have been researching it vs. the Asus Transformer and know the pluses and minuses, but still can't make up my mind.

Does anyone here have experience using both? I haven't had a chance to play around with the Transformer, but know most of the iPad's capabilities and limitations.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks!

I only have iPad experience, but I'd assume the answer you're looking for depends heavily on what you're planning on using the device for. Can you give us a quick run down of why you're looking to buy a tablet?

It will be used heavily for multimedia (business trips, etc.), some word processing, internet connectivity. Reading with the kids will be a nightly use as well.

I am leaning iPad for this since the Transformer seems to be more suited for those who like the portability of a tablet, but need netbook functionality as well.

Another question for the masses, is the white bezel of the iPad2 distracting when watching movies, tv, etc.?

Just FYI, DennisK4, there are a few alternate browsers out there that have different features like dropbox support, adblocking or custom user interfaces.

however, they don't have access to the same private APIs that Safari does so they run a bit slower than Safari and are jittery on long, image heavy pages. (this speed issue is a new development as Apple started calling on the devs to take out the private API calls)

edit:

also, apple.com/ipad can answer a lot of the essential questions you may have (like what browser it uses and what other basic apps are out there)

FWIW - a friend of mine ordered the Transformer from Amazon and returned it two days later for the new Galaxy Tab. He reported that it just felt sluggish.

IMO, at least until Honeycomb gets a little more fleshed out with updates, I would stick with an iPad2 (and probably even after that).

If my company wanted to buy 6 Ipads right now, trying to spend money left over in our budget but we needed them right now, where would we be able to do this and get them in my office by June 30th??

If you get distracted by a white frame when watching a movie, quite frankly you should watch a better movie.

It's never distracting for me, but the black frames do look more seamless in general. It suits the design better, and I would have gone for black if they had any in stock at the time.

White looks cool though, and has one benefit of not showing greasy prints.

The black makes the blacks in video look grey in comparison. The white offers better contrast, making blacks in video look much richer. Not to mention white is more seamless when reading the internet, magazines ect.

You can argue either side of this optical illusion. If white offered better contrast, every tv would have a white bezel.

And I don't find the white more seamless when looking at predominantly white screens on the net, because the white of the display and the white of the frame are completely different.

The contrast is the same. You're kidding yourself.

iOS 5's addition of tabbed browsing does pretty much transform the iPad browsing experience into a much, much better one.
Oh I need tabbed browsing alright. Do you people know how many tabs I have open right now?

I assumed that was already possible.

When is iOS 5 out? Do we have a date?

While I am asking questions: how are people finding the NeoGAF browsing experience on the iPad?

For iPad 1 users, is memory management any better or are tabs still reloading just as often?

Will Safari (or does it) for iOS5 have the ability to go fullscreen and switch tabs by swiping?

That is why I love iCab so far.

Nope and nope.

@DennisK4

Gaf browsing on the ipad is great… if you go here: secondapps.com/neogaf

it’s decent on the normal site but the mobile optimized site from ckohler is made for fingers.

Even with the iPad 2 I don't think it loads the tab until you bring it to the foreground. Which is lame for people like me who usually open all the posts with new posts and so once I go to it it just takes me to the top of the thread.

All, what is the best way to use google chat on the ipad? I have used the actual site, but I don't suppose there is any chat app that actually updates when you aren't "in" it is there?

There are a bunch of ones, like Meebo or Beehive. I don't use them very much so I can't comment as to quality.

Hmm, actually I think I had beehive (or is it BeeJive?) on my old iPod Touch I think... As long as they update with new chats when you are in another app tat is great.

I use the shit out of GTalk, as all my friends have Android devices. Imo.im is the best one I've come across so far.

Apple seriously needs to release a better scaling algorithm for iphone apps to ipad, I mean shit there really is no reason NOT to. Ugh this is why iPad2 needs to be jailbroken asap so I can get that one scaler from Cydia.

Hmm...

So I'm trying to sync my iTunes library on my iMac to my iPad 2 with the Remote app. I enter the code, and the Remote app finds nothing. I deregistered my iPhone and iPad, restarted the iMac, deleted and redownloaded the app to both devices. iPhone finds the library just fine, iPad does not find anything. Can only one device be used as a Remote?

Can't think of a solution but I can tell you that you can have both registered with the Remote app at the same time.

I haven't had an iOS device for a couple months, isn't there a new homesharing setting or something that you have to have enabled? Not sure if that applies to the Remote app as well but I'd check the settings menu just for shits.

Rumor is fall, 2011

Browsing is pretty good- sometime my thick thumbs mess up zooming into a site (neogaf pages anyone?). Need tabbed browsing no doubt. I find alt. browers very laggy (skyfire for example).

Some sites are less "apple friendly" than others. I use Flipboard all the time. Its a cool app and is flawless on the ipad2 as far as a magazine style compliation of popular sites/

Can any UK gaffer recommend a cheap but decent stylus?
I don't know if they ship to UK, but Amazon has a rooCase stylus for $9. It's great and definitely good quality for the money. I'm pretty sure it's exactly the same as Boxwave's

It's not a rumor, Apple announced it on stage. iOS 5 is in beta right now.

Why does the iPad take so much longer to charge than the iPod touch? Like hours vs. minutes. I could plug my dead iPod in and have it almost charged in an hour. But my iPad from 50% takes hours just to get to 70%.

Because the battery is bigger?

Jasoco said:
Seems like it should be proportional though. My iPad doesn't seem to last proportionately as long as my iPod does.
Your iPod isn't powering a 10" IPS display. 25 vs 3 Wh. 8 times the battery capacity will take that much longer to recharge.

I'm ignoring the rest of your comment, because you should know better, but this last part...what? Hours to charge 20%? If that's true, you're doing something very wrong.

Speaking of battery issues, I'm yet to update to iOS5 beta 2, but my iPad has turned itself off about 10 times since I installed beta 1.

Hopefully this new beta will change that.

Man, this machine is magical.

It blows me away when I stop and really think what my iPad is doing for me at times. Watching videos, streaming iTunes music off my laptop via shared library, playing (nearly) console quality games, wireless syncing, etc. Kind of neat how far technology has come since I was a kid (only 22 now).

Sorry for the mini apple fanboy rant. However this is more of a general stop and think how far all tech has come, not jus apple stuff.

Mm, a device that, as far as size is concerned, looks like a digital frame that should have trouble rendering JPGs doing everything tablets can do nowadays really is mind boggling.

I'm 32. It's come a lot further than that.
