I'm ignoring the rest of your comment, because you should know better, but this last part...what? Hours to charge 20%? If that's true, you're doing something very wrong.
Actually, it does take hours (2) to charge 20%--the last 20%. General rule of thumb is that an iPad will charge from any power level to 80% in two hours, but the final 20% always takes at least two hours.

So you could go from 0% to 80% in two hours, and then 80% to 100% in two more.

Mine just went form 80 to 100 while I've been browsing, it's been maybe twenty minutes.

EDIT: sounds like you're right going by the data, but I swear this took 20 minutes. Weird. I must not be right about when I plugged it in.

Are you using the iPad's power brick?
No, actually. I can't find it, and until they implemented wifi syncing I didn't think to use it much. Now that I can sync without plugging it into the laptop, I bet it'll be better to plug it into the wall. I assume it charges faster that way? I have literally never charged any of my iDevices via anything but my computer if you can believe it.

Takes a long ass time for me too, But I got the iPad in a trade and didn't get the original 10w adapter that come with iPads.

Anyone here use TeamViewer HD? Is it any good? Does it use ridiculous amounts of data?

I was looking for something to control my PC from a distance within my home. Mostly as a lazy way to open/close/pause/start Flash-based streaming video in Firefox on my PC.

My iPad 2 never charges plugged into my PC, I assume it can't draw enough power through a PC USB.

It's okay but I prefer Splashtop greatly.

Splashtop isn't free for more than 5 minute connections at a time.

Do you know if you can immediately connect again as soon as it disconnects, or do you have to wait for some period of time? 5 minutes might be adequate for my needs.

Actually Splashtop is on sale for $1.99 right now so I'll consider it. However, it apparently shrinks your desktop to 1024x768? Does that mean your actual PC's resolution gets dropped and I have to fix it on my PC afterwards? Or is it just for the duration of the connection to the iPad?

Honestly I don't know. I threw down the money for it and didn't regret it for a second. TeamViewer leaves a window up on your PC after you're done using it which I found pretty annoying. Also you have to drag your finger around to move your mouse, compared to Splashtop you can just point to where you want to click and the mouse will move there, more in line with how you naturally use the iPad.

Edit: Once you exit your Splashtop session your PC will automatically bounce back to it's default resolution.

I'm like $0.80 short of iTunes credit. Having to redeem another iTunes card for the purchase will be annoying lol. I might try the free app and see how I like the interface, then buy it.

Question: If you're on the same network, will it just go direct over wifi or will it route through the Internet and use up tons of data?

Speaking of remote controlling a PC, what about LogMeIn Ignition? It's expensive as hell, but if reviews/impressions say it's clearly superior to the alternatives, it might be worth biting.

I don't know if they ship to UK, but Amazon has a rooCase stylus for $9. It's great and definitely good quality for the money. I'm pretty sure it's exactly the same as Boxwave's
I found one on the UK store by BoxWave that looks the exact same, so I presumed it's the same one re branded. Just ordered now, thanks for the recommendation!

Any of you guys try Roadshow yet? It allows you to save videos from the web to watch offline. It's free for up to 15 videos, with a $5 IAP to make it unlimited. Pretty sweet, I saved the Captain America trailer and it worked perfectly.

Went for Splashtop. I guess $1.99 is cheap. I've certainly wasted more on Steam sales for games I never even ended up installing.

I do it too, but it always amazes me how much thought it takes for someone to spend $2. :p

I love splash top. Works flawlessly in the same network. Havent tried remote usage though. Forwarding ports always makes me afraid some Lulzsec type kiddie will hack their way in

You don't need to forward anything with the new Internet discovery feature.

I was a big fan of LogMeIn until I started using Splashtop. Splashtop is such a better experience it makes the price difference seem ridiculous.

My only complaint is an OCD one; I wish Splashtop had a better icon.

You can set it to display the monitor's current resolution. If you leave it at 1024, it switches automatically when it takes control, and changes back when you close the app. It's pretty seamless. It also has the highest FPS of any of the remote control apps.

So I got splash top for the Iphone, when it was free. I now have an Ipad. Is there any benifit to getting the Ipad version if I can just full size the Iphone one?

I nicked a chunk out of the corner of my iPad accidentally hitting it on a wall =( oh well now it has character:

The iPad's uneasy relationship with marginally powered USB ports is something that confuses a lot of users. Of all the computers I use, only about half the USB ports on half the computers can actually properly charge an iPad. The remainder fall into the slow-charge gap where they will technically charge it, but it takes forever and often says "Not charging".

Did either of you use the smart cover and/or a case? If you didn't use a case, was it worth the trade off?

2xing the iPhone one will turn your the screen into a pixelated mess, and cut off some of the image. Also, the iPhone keyboard upscaled is less than helpful

I guess that's where my confusion is coming from. I never use anything but the wall charger.

Anyone here have an iPad and Verizon FiOS? If so, have you had any issues with WiFi?

I have a friend who has an iPad 2 on order -- should be here in a few days. He had never set up WiFi since his house is wired for Cat5, so I set up a network for him this weekend. I tested it out with my iPad 2, but the WiFi connection was not stable. It would drop periodically, and the failure mode varied. In most cases, it would force me to reenter the network password. Sometimes doing that would work, but other times it would give an error message. (Weirdly, sometimes despite the error message, the connection would be reestablished...other times, the error was really an error.) In other cases, the network would not be visible even though the SSID was set to broadcast.

My understanding is that for FiOS, Verizon gives you a combination modem and router. His model is probably one of the first-gen units since it only supports WEP and WPA (original). We were trying to use WPA since WEP is insecure, but some Google research indicates that other FiOS people have the same issues using WEP.

Anyone have a similar problem? If so, what did you do to resolve it? If you have FiOS and the WiFi works fine...what model of modem/router did you get from Verizon?

I'm using a smart cover with no case. I actually was walking through the house while carrying it and it nicked the wall. I wish I could say it was some kind of epic fall but it wasn't.

regardless I am loving going the smart cover + no case route. it's usually in my laptop bag or I'm using it. it's held up perfectly fine otherwise

My parents have fios and while I visited last weekend, I had no problems.
I'm not sure what model the router is, but they live in the 2nd place in the country to get fios and have had it for a few years now, so I'm pretty sure its first gen hardware (unless they had an issue and Verizon replaced it at some point)

I had issues with WEP on my FIOS router and had no issues afterwards when switching to WPA.

I have a smart cover, but not a case. I don't really care about it. It's hardly noticeable to me. I doubt it'd affect the resell value THAT much.

What do GIF's run like on iPad2? I know it doesn't do flash. I currently use my HTC Mozart as a web browser. It's OK, but I was thinking of getting an iPad. So, GIF's; yay on nay?

They used to run at like half-speed but I think there was an update along the way that fixed that. Now they all play at normal speed for me. The only problem is running out of RAM if it's a huge .gif or on a page with a lot of other pictures. (Edit: I'm on an iPad1 lolol)

I bought my mom and iPad for her birthday like 3 weeks ago and she dropped it today and cracked the screen pretty bad. Anyone know what the going rate at the apple store right now to fix the screen?

OK dude, thanks. iPad 2 soon methinks.

If they are really nice, they will make an exception and do it for free, and say "just this one time." If they are mean, you can try buying accident protection insurance on http://www.squaretrade.com.

Ipad2 finally came in after ordering it 3 weeks ago and as my first, iOS device, it's been nothing short of excellent. Unluckily for me, the day after I got it, I ended up hospitalized for a couple days. Luckily, I was able to bring it along and that coupled with the hospital wifi made the time recovering a lot easier. It pretty much lasted the whole two days without a charge. I tried all the different browsers and finally settled upon iLunascape as my browser of choice. I've yet to try one of the paid browsers.

Yeah the iPad brick outputs 2 amps, while most computer ports do 500mA (or 1A if they support the extra juice USB charging mode).

I never got it cause it needs to go through the internet to connect, although I'm not sure if it can use the LAN exclusively from that point. It's useful if you have some networking issue and can't host a server properly...but my network works fine (I use VNC tunneled over SSH just cause the servers are built into OS X). A lot of people like TeamViewer since I think it can do the same thing as LogMeIn (i.e. get around funky networks) but it's free.

If you have iCab you can download videos too. It doesn't have the fancy organization UI of Roadshow though.

Wild guess is crappy router. I guess try resetting whatever settings on it, and resetting network settings on the iPad, sometimes that clears up mystery problems.

Trying to find a 64gb wifi only version in Edinburgh or Glasgow ... all out of stock still.
I really want one! :lol

I'll be in London next week, hopefully I'll have a bit more luck down there =] Otherwise I'll just have to order online and wait a couple of weeks for delivery.

UK GAF, any suggestions on where else I could try?

2 Questions:

1. Can I access my desktop using Splashtop when using a 3g-only connection on the iphone/ipad?

2. How is the iPad 2 for professional use? Anyone use it for meetings/notes/to-dos?

Splashtop has a function to let you connect to your home PC from somewhere else over Internet if you set up a gmail account for Internet Discovery. It's supposed to work over 3G/4G/Wifi but I've only tried wifi over home network, which works great. I'll try wifi over internet and tethered to 3G in a few days when I find the time to configure it and go somewhere to test it.

Man, this machine is magical.

It blows me away when I stop and really think what my iPad is doing for me at times. Watching videos, streaming iTunes music off my laptop via shared library, playing (nearly) console quality games, wireless syncing, etc. Kind of neat how far technology has come since I was a kid (only 22 now).

Sorry for the mini apple fanboy rant. However this is more of a general stop and think how far all tech has come, not jus apple stuff.

I deposited my check with the Chase App and scanning the check with the iPad camera, then while at my girlfriends house I used Air Video to stream my Divx to her HDTV in her room from my 4TB server at my house.

Saying that I love this thing is an understatement.

Finally ordered an iPad 2 together with a SwitchEasy CoverBuddy (Navy Blue). :D Thanks to everyone who answered my (grating) questions!

Now the follow-up question is; what iPad-specific apps (that is, no games) do you guys recommend? Stuff that you didn't know you could live without and so on. Music production apps are of general interest to me.

Right now I have stocked up on:

- Bamboo Paper
- Flipboard
- Zite Personalized Magazine
- Jot!
- procreate
- Roadshow
- Splashtop Remote Desktop
- TeamViewer HD
- AppShopper
- BBC News
- Dropbox
- Evernote / Springpad
- Google Earth
- FileApp Pro / Song Exporter Pro
- Filtatron
- IMDb
- TuneIn Radio Pro
- WolframAlpha
- Twitter
- Zinio Magazine

Looking to purchase (when cheaper):

- NanoStudio
- Korg iMS-20 / iELECTRiBE
- FL Studio HD
- Air Video

Anything else I'm really forgetting?

Hey guys, anyone here have a recommendation for an illustration app?

I am talking a vector-based drawing app like Adobe Illustrator. If Adobe puts out a Illustrator for iPad app I am gonna jizz in my pants.

What the heck, I might as well ask for pixel-based Photoshop-like app recommendations while I am at it. Is there a must-have paint program?

By the way BeeDog, nice list gonna check out the apps.

Air Video is only like $3. If you have a large media collection, you'd be a fool not to get it. I would have paid $30 for this app easy.

I know, the "(when cheaper)" part was mostly referring to the other very costly apps on that list.

Also, thanks DennisK4! Anyway, here's more "planning on buying" apps that might help some of you as well:

- Instapaper (though I don't know if this will be needed seeing as iOS 5.0 seems to have something similar built-in)
- GoodReader for iPad
- AirMusic
- Zen Brush
- Articles for iPad
- Delivery Status touch
- Reeder for iPad
- Pocket Informant HD (expensive, and I hope there's some cheaper and/or better alternative)
- 1Password Pro
- Brushes - iPad Edition
- SketchBook Pro for iPad
- Adobe Ideas

I personally feel this is a pretty comprehensive list of apps, but as before, if I have missed some obvious must-have, please help me out.

I haven't seen anything for vector. but for raster stuff, I've been using Autodesk Sketchbook Pro and ProCreate. Then I got a 21" cintiq, and now I don't use my iPad 2 as much.

Wacom and Adobe should make a dedicated mobile tablet.

I feel so bad now, because I'm clearly one of those idiots that is never happy with gadgets, even though everything is really amazing right now.

Yesterday, for example, I was lying in bed, watching an episode of a TV show on my iPad. That episode was streamed via WiFi over the air and encoded on my home server, so my iPad could read the format. I didn't have to sync it, I didn't have to encode it beforehand. I didn't have to do shit and it still worked. And I still got annoyed, when I had to wait 15 seconds in the middle of the episode, because it had to buffer some bit.

If you're like me, watch this and feel bad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r1CZTLk-Gk
