In portrait, sure. In landscape not so much, if you hold in your hands. But who uses the iPad in landscape anyways? Except for watching videos.
If I'm typing something long, I set it down on the table and type in landscape. Holding it in my hands, I type portrait, usually.

I hope they release something like this

A smaller iPad wouldn't hurt right ?

So it won't replace the iPad, that sucks. I want that screen for $499.
You will. When the iPad 3 comes out in 2012. And that will have a better processer to go with it as well.

The iPad 2 HD sounds like a pretty silly idea to me. If you are going to give pros a high res screen for editing you need to give them/me a lot more power as well....

I agree that it sounds pretty silly mostly because it would fragment iOS.

Count me in. 6 inches and I'm there.

That's what she said.

If the iPad HD is real, then I doubt that the iPad 3 will come with the same display.

I only ever use my iPad in portrait when using Pages. That's it.

Anyway, I'm probably very late but I'm so happy that Flipboard has FINALLY realised it's potential and is now a brilliant and essential app, the latest update is great stuff :)

oh you guys. so silly

Steve has said a lot of stuff. Still though, even if the iPod touch goes for a 4-5 inch screen, that's fine too. I just want something bigger than a Touch but smaller than an iPad. I can't be the only one, too.

Heh...

On a serious note, I can't see Apple making a smaller iPad, although if the rumor of an iPad HD is true who knows?

You might not be the only one, but you're definitely in a minority. Apple isn't going to make one unless they think there's a huge demand, and so far, the market has proven Jobs right.

The market has proven Jobs right about half baked 7" Android tablets. Other similar sized devices (kindles, nook colors etc) sell in large numbers. There could be a market for a 6" iPad, nothing so far can be used as proof that there isn't one. Also Apple doesn't make products because they "think there's a huge demand for it". They know that there can't be a huge demand for something that doesn't exist.

Right, but they obviously have an excellent grasp of what will sell in their own product lines. If they see a hole, they'll fill it. I'm just not convinced there's a hole, and there certainly isn't a price gap they're missing out on.

Kindles and Nooks prove nothing either way. Those are uni-tasking devices in a totally different price range.

On top of that, none of the rumors that are worth a lick have mentioned a smaller size. I don't see it happening.

Yeah the Kindles and Nook sales don't directly apply as those users are looking for a book reader that i the size of a book IMO.

Tablets are a different animal.

just kidding ;)

In my ongoing journey of realising the bleeding obvious, I downloaded tChess app today.

Another use for the trusty iPad!

I feel pretty stupid, but it was exciting at the time.

On the other hand spent 2 hrs looking for a decent digital picture frame app to stream photos from my home server to the iPad. Still no app that fits the bill. FileBrowser is okay, but no shuffle, no fancy transitions, no playlists. There are a couple of dlna apps but none that is very impressive. Very frustrating that iTunes will push photos to AppleTV, but not the iPad.

Hopefully the iCloud photo streaming will address this.

What do you mean by push photos? The iPad can AirPlay photos.

I have a quick question about Ios in general.
Let's say I have Angry Birds installed on my Ipad 2. I have everything unlocked. I then delete the game.
I want to play all the levels I unlocked so I go to Itunes and install it again from the APP menu.
Now the game is reloaded but I have no data.

How can I keep the data on games if I delete them and want to play it later on?

Right now there is no way to do that unless you jailbreak your device, but with iCloud I believe developers will be able to implement cloud saves.

This was #1 on my iOS wishlist. So frustrating, especially moving between the same universal app on iPad>iPhone

Does anyone here have Skyfire? How well does it work on sites with ad based Flash videos? Like Cinemassacre and thatguywiththeglasses. Or Hulu?

And please no "why not jailbreak?" or "download this or that app". I'm asking about Skyfire as an option for my dad (who asked when the iPad is getting Flash after seeing a commercial for a competitor) and myself occasionally and want to make sure they work before spending $5 each.

What's the best case, not cover, for the iPad 2? I need a solution that doesn't make me want to baby my.. baby, yet doesn't make it bulky.

part of me thinks an iPad HD makes little sense in 2011 as Apple is still so far ahead of the competition and is still selling every ipad it can make.

But Josh and those guys do have some decent sources so… you never know.

day one on a retina class iPad, of course. whether it’s this year or next.
Are they the same sources that said iPad 2 would be higher resolution than the original iPad? I'm sure there's some truth to it, but I'm guessing it's probably more like early production tests or something to get ready for an iPad 3 launch in the usual timeframe.

I remeber using Atomic and hating it. Is iChromy better than iCab when it comes to performance ?
None of them feel too different, but iChromy is...Chrome like UI wise if that matters to you. And it's free so you might as well try it out.

You don't need to jailbreak to extract/restore save data (it makes it easier of course), there's a few ways to do it like iPhone Extractor or Explorer or whatever and some backup extraction stuff.

I've always been of the mind that iPad HD would not happen without some reason. Apple don't just release products without a use-case scenario, typically some software or content that utilises the hardware upgrade.

Rumours of iTunes 1080P would be such a case:

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/08/apple-to-debut-hd-1080p-itunes-movie-services-later-this-year/
The reason would be the same one the iPhone 4 got a better screen, so everything gets sharper and clearer. Hell basic text is probably the best example for it. Movies look pretty good right now, meanwhile text looks kinda crappy.

Ya I want an iPad Retina for reading. I find the current iPad is just adequate, but not good.

However, I'll be pretty annoyed if my iPad 2 looks like garbage next to an iPad HD only 5 months later. I bought the iPad 2 with the understanding that Apple wasn't releasing another iPad for at least a year, otherwise I would've waited.

Maybe they're just floating this rumor to mess up competitors' plans (they'll want to wait until the September event to finalize their hardware and send it off for production, but then that will prevent them from having enough supply during the Holiday season).

It seems like a 2048x1536 screen would eat an insane amount of battery and require a quadcore just to maintain iPad 2 level performance. I have no idea how they plan to make that the same thickness as the iPad 2 this year. Maybe in a year or two it could be possible, but this year it doesn't seem possible unless it costs $999 but that's way too expensive to sell.

I have the iPhone Skyfire, I can install it and try those sites when I wake up.

I doubt it'll come alongside the iPhone 5.. Honestly just wait till the time iPad 3 was expected (i.e. year give or take turn around), and release a retina version.

Can we even think of what they will do to the hardware for an iPad 3? It's already damn thin, and I don't see them making any major build changes other than retina.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out, people will go insane if it comes with i5 and rightfully so.

i have a pretty informal-sounding job interview this week, and i also have an ipad, but i don't have a printer. do you think if someone says "please bring your resume to the interview" it's a douche move to just show them a PDF, or will it display my class and willingness to adapt to a modern lifestyle?

You always bring printed copies of your documents. Always.

but what's the precedent for that based on - there weren't any other options until like 18 months ago!

Unless you are looking to get a job at Apple, it still comes across as a bit of a douche move

They may want to file it away or have multiple people view it. Print a few copies at Kinkos
or buy a few iPads to give away at interviews as resumé readers.

iPad 1 owners: Do you find that apple logo on the backside gets scratched? I just bought a zaggmate keyboard case, which leaves the back exposed (and since it'll be bouncing around in my backpack, this may be a problem). Should I get one of those plastic films for the back? I don't personally care about it, but it's possible that I'll sell this thing in the future so I want to keep it nice.

i assume you will leave the ipad there with them so they can review your resume later?

that will probably get you the job

I subscribe to The Economist and Bloomberg Businessweek. Both of these apps allow you to download issues and save them to the iPad for offline viewing. Is there anyway to pull the issues from the iPad and save them on a PC?

Gaffers, what's the best app to take notes on ?

I'm tired of brainstorming on paper, gotta be ecological! It's the 21st century damnit.
