Which back cover did you get?
Though I could have sworn you were against that sort of thing.
I didn't think I needed it, but I figured for $11 I would give it a try, and I ended up liking it.

It's just a plastic shell that clips on, has a nice feel on the back, and has cutouts for the smart cover and all the ports. It's so thin it doesn't interfere with the smart cover stand.

This one:

It's up to $15 now, sorry.

If there is an iPad "HD" I don't think they'll just simply up the resolution on it and call it a day. There has to be some other component revisions to handle a higher res while not sacrificing speed and battery life. Would a smaller screen be able to handle that type of resolution instead? Would you just keep the same casing and screen size but put faster components inside? But if so...why not just name it the iPad 3? Faster, HD, etc. whatever.

Something is up...there will definitely be some sort of iPad release but who knows what it will actually look like.

I don't think I've been more pumped for an Apple conference than I am for the traditional September event this year. So many hardware rumors, iOS5 release (finally!), and whatever else they throw out.

Do we know there will be a traditional September event this time? Apple has proven this year that they no longer go by the predictable book anymore.

But I hope there is.

the events have been on schedule this year, all that's been unpredictable so far has been the content of the events.

Whether it's in September or not..who knows. There WILL be some event though to announce hardware and public release of iOS5. Could be August...we'll see.

I really hope they treat this iPad (if released) as if it was the iPad 3, have been waiting so long for the iPad but really wanted a higher resolution. Random Aside: Whitta if your looking at this thread it'd be really cool if you guys discussed this on the podcast.

part of me thinks an iPad HD makes little sense in 2011 as Apple is still so far ahead of the competition and is still selling every ipad it can make.

But Josh and those guys do have some decent sources so… you never know.

day one on a retina class iPad, of course. whether it’s this year or next.

Totally agree. Why bother when they are still unable to meet demand? On the other hand, it would step on the competitions throat and guarantee total dominance. I'm not sure what to believe.

I support an iPad HD sooner rather than later.

I skipped the iPad 2 because of the lack of inevitable resolution increase and lack of jailbreak.

Though tbh, I'd probably skip the iPad HD if it came out in the fall, as I'd expect the next iPad HD to have a more powerful GPU that can better handle the drastically increased resolution.

Really, my iPad 1 is perfect, save for the lack of memory...which has been a complaint since day 1.

I have that one and it works just as well.

And the price doesn't matter?
I'll eat ramen for a year if it means I can get a
6"
retina display ipad for $999 this fall.

I don't think Apple is even concerned at all the Android and webOS threat anymore. They are much more interested in the iPad taking on the laptop computer market, especially before the Windows 8 tablets come out.

Haha, WebOS threat. Good one.

I think this is a key point to understanding Apple's philosophy in many of the markets they compete in.

While the competition are trying to compete with Apple by making a super tablet, Apple are thinking much more forwardly and gearing to take over the actual portable computer market. One aspect is blurring the line in their Mac OS X.

It's funny, because it's so blatantly obvious, but other companies never take it to heart. Steve Jobs even said plain and simple why the iPad is ahead is not because of specs, but user experience, yet companies STILL focus on the former!

iPad 3 news shouldn't make you rage. That's one of the positives about buying Apple products, they have great resell value. Shouldn't be too hard to sell off an iPad 2 and make most of your money back.

Unless they drop the price of the iPad by a $100 like last time

Ipad HD specs
Pressure sensitive stylus that works with touch display
2x resolution
4x gpu cores
12 inch display
OLED
$ 999 price

that wouldn’t be an iPad HD. that would be a modbook type thingamajig. every ipad app that works with fingers would work with a more powerful, hi res ipad (whether it comes this year or next). adding a stylus breaks that

there is no “Pro" model. you know that :)

if it exists, it would just be a preview of next year’s mainstream, lower priced model. it’s not changing input styles for anyone

Why would a stylus break functionality?

Am I the only one that thinks everyone is crazy? 2/3 of the Current iPad size is because of the batteries. To make what you people want, means a huge hit to battery life, or add another battery in and increasing the weight.

People will complain if it gets bigger
People will complain if battery life takes a hit
People still want a magical device that cannot exist without taking at least one of those two hits

Watch people freak out when news of the PS Vita battery life gets out - which is bound to be much smaller than people want. Sony (like Nintendo) can kinda deal with that, it is is still predominately a gaming devise. Apple cannot.

You're right about people always complaining. Because of this, Apple will have a clear road map of what they will include at the rate of technological advances and cost drops, so they can always keep moving forward.

I hope the dock connector is on the side for the iPad 3/HD. Typing on a keyboard using portrait is just ridiculous

Typing at all on the ipad is ridiculous. The thing needs SWYPE; I don't know why Apple is so stubborn. Hopefully it comes with the ios5 update.

You can jailbreak and install Swype if you need it. I don't think Swype is going to come to 5.0 (though there's going to be a split keyboard added, which might indicate willingness to adopt other keyboard types).

Split keyboard is just the normal keyboard in two different modes. Not an alternate keyboard in the same sense Emoji is an alternate "keyboard".

Is there a native Facebook iPad app available? My wife's laptop kicked the bucket, and I'm thinking of getting a tablet instead, since she's no longer in school and wouldn't need Windows. If a native app isn't available, what do you guys use, the regular app or the website?

No thanks. I can fly on the keyboard as is. Swype is overrated, you only need it on the other platforms because the multitouch implementation isn't as good as Apple's.

have you ever used swype?

A native app is in development. Right now I'm using MyPad, but it's kinda shit.

Thanks brotkasten. How does the website work on Safari? Any weirdness?

Wait, actually? I thought that MZ went on about how it was unnecessary?

Facebook had its application for the iPhone ready right when the Apple App Store opened in July 2008. But more than a year after the iPad went on sale, there is still no official Facebook app for it.

That is about to change. People briefed on Facebook’s plans say that in coming weeks the company plans to introduce a free iPad application that has been carefully designed and optimized for the tablet.

The app has been in production at Facebook for almost a year, going through several design iterations, and is now in the final stages of testing, according to these people, who declined to be named because they were discussing confidential product plans.

Nah swype doesn't work too well on a big screen, too much distance between the keys (although using a stylus helps a little).

Tobor said:
Yep, on a friends Android phone.
try typing on the iPhone keyboard with one hand and then swyping on the android phone with one hand. swyping is a lot easier (and faster—but speed is not the be-all, else we'd still be using physical keyboards). it's a nice option to have.

I think that the split keyboard should've been there from the start. The current iPad keyboard is one of the times that I think Apple was a bit lazy as there were plenty of implementations of it on other platforms. The cases in which the current iPad keyboard implementation makes sense are very limited: Holding iPad in with one hand, pecking with the other, and iPad sitting flat on a surface.

The split keyboard has mitigated this for me, for the most part. Now, holding with both hands and typing with two thumbs works in in both portrait and landscape, just like with the iPhone/iPod. To me, this feels like the ideal model.

I don't like Swype as it is necessary to look at the keyboard while you're Swyping.

In portrait, sure. In landscape not so much, if you hold in your hands. But who uses the iPad in landscape anyways? Except for watching videos.
