VLC for iPad is pretty awful.

This application is much better:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/avplayerhd/id407976815?mt=8

It also outputs over HDMI at up to 1080p.
I decided to get this on a whim and I absolutely cannot figure out how to find the folder to put movies in. This is the description on the iTunes page:

How to add video with USB
- Run iTunes 9.1 or above
- Device->My Device(My iPad)->Apps, drag and drop files to the AVplayerHD's documents
I don't really know what this means. I've opened iTune, clicked on the iPad, clicked on Apps, which leads me to a huge list of every app I have (the Sync Apps list). I find the AVPlayer icon on that list, but I can't drag any video files onto it or anything.

Where is the folder??

There should be another list of apps underneath that list of apps.

Hey iPadsters, I've been thinking about jumping in and using an iPad to DJ with now that this little item has been released but I feel really hampered by only 64 gigs of storage. Is there any chatter about a 128 gig model and/ or anyway to expand the memory?

No way to expand for app use, per se...128GB chips small enough for iPad use are starting to filter out to OEMs this year, but it remains to be seen if Apple will take the initiative. If they release next year as per usual, I think there's a good chance. But I doubt we see any tablet/phone release with 128GB this year from anyone.

So even if the source video is 480p, AVPlayerHD will upscale and output at 1080p? Or does it only output 1080p if the source video is 1080p?

This I'm not sure about. I've only used it to play 720p, and have it set to output at 720p.

If it upscales, that would be worth getting. Otherwise, I don't see the point in an app that outputs HD if my source video isn't HD.

It also outputs in the correct aspect ratio over HDMI. You're not stuck with 4:3.

If all of your videos are sub-HD AND 4:3 then VLC might be good enough. Even so I'd still recommend AVPlayerHD. There's really no other video playing app on iPad that compares, short of jailbreaking and installing XBMC.

AirPlay- how do I make it work. The apple instructions all indicate it should just magically work if my apple tv and ipad2 are on the same network, but none of my videos or music actually display the AirPlay button in the controls. Anything I am missing?

This is why I keep saying to ditch VLC, there's a bunch of other apps still in the store and being actively updated for new features and fixes if any issues pop up.

It's not global (yet), which apps are you testing it out with? Otherwise all I can think is maybe that there's something on the Apple TV you have to turn on, or your LAN is configured weird perhaps (like wifi on a different subnet or something).

I think there are settings you need to turn on in one or both.

finally took the plunge to customized the look of iPad 2

You don't have the icon showing up in the iPod or videos app? Make sure you've turned on home sharing on both. Reboot both. You should see it.

Needed to activate it in iPod settings screen. Weird. But thanks, your post led me there.

I messed around with the iPad before but a few days ago a friend let me test out his extensively and I was most impressed by what a great comic reader it is... Is it wrong if I just want to impulse buy this thing for that sole reason?

its really good comic reader. I don't even have to zoom in per panel.

read all Invincible comics on it. Sometimes 2 hrs non-stop

Quick question: I want a rubber backing (case) for my iPad 2 so I can pick up the damn thing without worrying about it slipping out of my hands.

However, I also think I might want Apple's official iPad 2 cover, or something like it.

So with that in mind, are there any rubber backing cases that are made with the iPad 2 cover in mind (ie won't cover up the part where the magnets clip)?

Have you felt the material that protectors like InvisibleShield and BestSkinsEver use? Those are pretty grippy and add almost nothing as far as thickness goes.

keep dreaming, it might happen if there really is a PRO model but then it will be to expensive. But you could start a petition about that!

What's there to dream about?

The software exists, Apple just needs to let the libraries be used.

We plan to release this capability as a free software library so it can be included in any application. However, this may not be possible for a while as the library now uses a private function call to access the required information.

We hope the UIKit framework can be updated to make the required information available, but there are no guarantees this will ever happen. In the meantime, we hope the video provides some insight into what is possible on this amazing piece of hardware.

Note: The small drawing lag in the video is an issue with our demo application code, and isn't a limitation of the iPad or the pressure-sensitive library.

Horse meet water.

that's not pressure sensitive, that's extrapolating the size of the object on the surface to a alpha value in the color. Pressure sensitive is an analog value being generated by the surface or pen itself. This is just a clever way of expressing "Hard" and "Soft" that has a limit of resolution to the touch size. I was talking about designing the tablet with this feature in mind with the Magical Pro model. clever hack at best.

Alright guys, I have a bit of a weird situation, hope you can help.

I have 2 laptops: old laptop and new laptop.

My iPhone is synced to iTunes on old laptop. All of my music files are also on old laptop.

My iPad is synced to iTunes on new laptop.

I want everythinng to be on my new laptop. Transferring the MP3's is no problem, but what's the best way to deal with my iPhone?

Is there an app out there that will forward text messages from my Android phone to my iPad while I'm on a common WiFi network?

Well, if you transfer all of your audio/video content to the new machine manually, you should be good to go. iTunes will warn you it wants to go wipe stuff from your phone when you plug it into the new machine, but it it sees the same (or more) content it should be business as usual there. Your apps will stay put but I think it should give you the option to copy them to the laptop so that you can sync properly. (And if you want I believe you can set apps to just not sync...but that's not recommended if you need to do a restore.)

Is that what you meant?

Ugh!!! I wish this thing did some real multitasking. I was downloading a file using one of those file manager apps and switched to safari to do some gaf browsing. I would switch back to the app to check on the progress once in a while. Well I guess a 10 min break and only using safari forced closed the app and now I have to restart my download. :/ is there anyway I can make a app stay open and force close other apps?

not really. either jailbreak to do this manually or (my suggestion) download icab and browse Gaf on there while downloading your file within icab. no risk of losing progress as you aren’t switching apps.

jailbreak is only way, since each app has a time to live of 5 minutes maybe max after exiting, or it's using an api that allows it to stay alive in the background.

Man the iPad will be so much better once it gets a Retina display. Reading just doesn't compare to a PC monitor yet.
I'm looking forward to the retina display and more RAM. As a first gen iPad user, the switch will feel even better. The ability to have more than 3 apps open at the same time or a browser with 4 tabs and no reloading must feel good

That would be backgrounder in cydia right? I have I iPad 2 and herd that it doesn't work to well with the iPad 2. Is there another solution in cydia?

Eh I think retina display will definitely be nice but reading is fine on iPad right now.

I find the edges of text to be too blurry for my liking. Maybe it's because I'm used to the sharpness of a PC LCD monitor and the iPhone 4.

Speaking of reading I downloaded Flipboard about a week ago and I'm absolutely in love, this is one of my favorite apps. I have no idea what it was like before the most recent update but as of right now it is one of the best aggregators I have ever seen.

Ya it's perfect for reading news/RSS on iPad.

Really? My sick 2560x1440 iMac screen doesn't have the PPI of my 1024x768 iPad. Its sharper plenty of monitors in the PPI dept. I'd say it's avg. I'd love higher res on iPad though, my iPhone 4 screen is so pretty.

Now I still can not wait for Retina pad. Though I REALLY doubt we will see it in the fall, or as a pro device. That extra PPI will run the batter and processors down in performance.

iPad 3 with A6 and new graphics will be able to have retina and hopefully keep its battery life while retaining a gain in overall performance. This makes the most sense overall. Especially since there wont be too much of an incentive to build games or apps at a higher PPI when its performance would be crap compared to the lower res regular iPad if they split this into a Pro line.

Plus with the two 3G providers and colors, they barely caught up with demand after 4 months. Thats 18 SKUs, why build a second line. A 3rd iteration just mask so much more sense when you think about everything, and I would be dumbfounded if it came before feb.

The iPad's screen is held much closer to the eyes than the typical viewing distance from a computer monitor. So while the computer monitors have lower PPI, they appear sharper to the eye.

It made sense for Apple to release a high priced iPad Pro now to fleece the early adopters and subsidize the tech for the iPad 3 coming next year. Apple is leaving money on the table with the current model. I'm honestly not sure they can release a 10" retina display for $500...
