Does anyone think the Android phone strategy of "put Android in everything" is sorta backfiring with tabs? With phones it seemed like people didn't care if they got an inferior version of Android, or hardware that ran it like shit, but could it be that people wise up and expect more out of a tablet?

The main reason Android managed to get so far on phones is because the iPhone was exclusive to AT&T for almost 4 years.

People who bought Android phones were mostly people who wanted an iPhone but couldn't/wouldn't switch to AT&T. Sure some geeks actually wanted Android, but most people wanted an iPhone and Android was the closest thing they could get.

Since the iPad was never restricted to just 1 carrier, especially due to the wifi model, everyone has just been buying that instead of Android tablets.

Over the next 2 years, it'll be interesting to see how many of the initial Android adopters switch to iPhone now that they can. The question is whether or not they bought enough stuff through Android to feel locked into the ecoystem. Considering the rather pathetic software sales of Android given their marketshare (the horrible Blackberry App World sells more software), I'm guessing that they are going to have a very significant loss in market share over the next 2 years.
 
Android manufacturers make the mistake of thinking their product can only be for tech enthusiasts and therefore make their commercials an announcement of tech specs. It's a dumb strategy.

I don't get this on a couple levels. Firstly Android tabs run Honeycomb which is made specifically for tablets.

Even before Honeycomb came out, with the release of the Galaxy Tabs running Froyo, there was all this hoopla about it being Android for phones. iPad's iOS is the iPhone's iOS exactly with some dual pane thrown in - that's exactly what Samsung did with the Galaxy Tab. Seemed really hypocritical.

In any case I think Android tablets can be pretty cool the issue is they are all so similar, you don't know which manufacturer is trustworthy when it comes to upgrading software and there is a limitation in apps compared to the iPad.
 
Apple will never lose the app lead.

All the main apps will eventually be ported to all the platforms, so that shouldn't matter as much, but gaming will always be Apple's dominion.

But isn't there a lot of cheap, bargain bin tablets on the market that run Android? The stuff you find at Toys R Us or Walmart? I would imagine most of that hardware is trash.

Indeed, my mom doesn't know jack shit about tablets so why would she care if it has a dual core tegra processor. Android needs some people who can market to your average joe. Apple knows whats up.

Android tablet marketing is also THE WORST.

Specs and UI aside, the order of sales is matched with the order of effective commercials. Android commercials stink and are targetting only tech geeks, and that's the impression people get when they hear specs being listed and such ridiculous statements as "Your wife will love the dual core Tegra 2 chipset". Apple commercials target everyone, Blackberry commercials target people who spend a lot of time away from home and office.

Why didn't you post the newer Galaxy Tab 10.1 ads? It's not an amazing ad or anything, but at least it targets more people than geeks.

Screw that. They didn't do that with the iPhone and I hope they don't with the iPad next year. The entire range should have the high res display.

So the guy who made Instapaper made this sweet graphic comparing the sales of tablets to failed consoles.

I don't know how accurate the "all the Android tablets combined" number is, but if it's anything close to that, then it's hilarious. As the article says, these consoles had a longer lifespan than any of these tablets, but it still interesting to compare videogame industry flops to the newer tablets.

Aside from the size of memory storage, Apple isnt likely to offer 5 different models with 20 different specifications. Their offerings are simple and streamlined. I dont see them offering and "HD model" and alienating the rest of their fans. Ipad 3 will launch next year as theyve always done.
 
the ipad line is already crowded with the 3 capacities and the 3 antenna variations (GSM, CDMA and wifi only). plus the two colours!

there’s 18 skus out there. Apple wouldn’t add another 9 or 18 or whatever and run them alongside the existing range. it’ll be a straight swap in the spring.

Precisely. Apple isn't stupid enough (at the moment) to fragment their product line like that.

Which is why theyre at work at releasing the "World Phone". I expect to see future iterations of Ipad to be free from the shackles of Verizon and the likes.
 
I wonder if iPad3/iPadHD will have the ARM6 processors? Considering how they are supposed to be out early next summer, I wonder if they can squeeze it into the March timeframe. Would be a true iPad 2 successor with a Retina display, ARM6 and probably better graphics.

yup. totally agreed.

Apple will do what it can to streamline operations to maximize its margins. it can’t be happy about the situation it is in with the ipad 2 and would love to be able to reduce the options out there.

That isn't a TV commercial, it doesn't have anywhere near the reach of the 30 second TV spots I posted. Maybe 52,000 people have seen that Galaxy Tab 10.1 ad, hundreds of millions of people have seen the TV spots.
 
Year of the iPad2 confirmed.

The iPad3 rumours were really exagerated and ridiculous. But I guess it drove traffic for the websites, I guess...

Retina A6 iPad 3 for March/April seems right.

Yeah the model numbers found in the iOS5 betas seem to indicate the next iPad will also have a "world" version and then a your typical wifi model.
 
Man, that's a bummer. I really, really wanted this iPad this Fall. I'm not really happy with my first gen iPad and there's no way I'd trade it for a faster model with the same low-res screen.
 
Is the ffffound app universal? Or is it still just an iPhone version?
 
Gaf, I am coming home with a tablet today. By this evening I'll have purchased either an iPad 2 or a Galaxy Tab. Is there anything I should know, being a first-time tablet owner or just anything in general?

1. Find a suitable cover as fast as possible. Since you'll be a new tablet owner, it helps to have it protected so you can use it without fearing scratches and stuff all the damn time. It definitely increases the enjoyment of using it.
2. I'd suggest you start writing down a list of apps/stuff you want to do with your tablet promptly. It helped me to plan out what apps I need to download/purchase in order to get the most use out of it quickly. Read up on this topic/other iPhone/iPad topics to find great suggestions on terrific apps.
 
Bought the iPad one week ago in Seattle, loving it so far. So smooth, awesome battery and a very solid design. I am currently looking for just some nice "allround" apps like Skype, Shazam, iCab. Anyone have some must-have apps?. I jailbreaked mine, so I would love to hear all recommendations.

One jailbreak app that I love is FakeLocation, it lets me watch sports that should be blacked out based on my location. FakeLocation makes the MLB app so much better.
 
Got a question I'm hoping someone can answer.

I got my iPad 2 on launch day, and it suffers from light leak and it has a stuck pixel. I don't have an Apple store where I live but I'm going back through to the city that does have one in the next few days, so my question is:
A) I presume the light leak issue has been fixed. Just an issue with launch units, right?
B) Will they swap it over without any issues?

I'm from the UK if that makes any difference.
