Apple iPad 2 |OT|

On commuter buses, tons of people have Kindles. They're way more common than iPads, and I've only once seen a non-iPad tablet in the wild.

You're completely missing the point. The Kindle DX is extremely rare odd product that nobody actually buys and doesn't have a market. It's going to disappear once the Amazon Tablet comes out, assuming they haven't already stopped making it.

The Kindle 3 sells millions of units because it's $129 and super ideal for reading books. It's by far a better book reading experience than an iPad if you're talking about just text. The screen is like paper, it's perfectly readable in sunlight, it's very light to hold and can be held for hours with 1 hand without making your arm sore, and it's roughly the size of a paperback book so it's big enough. It's battery life lasts 30 hours of reading, so you can easily take it on vacation and not worry about bringing a charger.
Sounds great I suppose for the market it hits, but I personally don't see the incentive. However for people who want something like that (small book reading device) it sounds excellent.

I just personally wouldn't buy one due to the fact that my iPad does the same task well, or at least to my expectations, along with being so much more. But of course this is just me.

Note I do read, have a hundred+ books on my iPad. Though tbh since my iPhone 4 it's hard to go back and read on my iPad first gen, which is why I can't wait for the next gen iPads.

Reading for hours on an iPad isn't a good experience. It's too heavy to hold for hours, you have to put it down and bend your neck, or otherwise rest it on something to prop it up. The Kindle 3 you can just hold.

Also, the E-Ink screen on the Kindle is way less stressful on your eyes. After reading text on an LCD for hours, my eyes are killing me. Reading on E-Ink is equivalent to reading on paper since there isn't a back-light shining into your eyes the whole time like there is with an LCD, so E=Ink is way more comfortable for sustained text reading.

My Kobo Touch fits in my pocket and goes everywhere with me. I read it all the time while waiting for the bus. It's great. The retina display on the iPod Touch/iPhone doesn't make up for the fact that it's a 3.5" screen, and an iPad HD would still be too big to carry around anyway.

Sentry said:
I don't know, seems so limited to the point where you might as well use a real book.. and from the e-readers i've seen they're not a mighty difference in price from a 16GB iPad.

Unless you're comparing the small screen versions, but the DX is the only thing comparable to an iPad imo due to the similar screen size. Can't really compare a 4-6" screen to a 9-10", can you?

And I think we all know where that market is heading. :p
Paperbacks versus Hardcovers.

That's your opinion, and you're welcome to it, but don't act like it's a universal truth. I have no problem reading my iPad for hours on end, not from weight or the screen.

That doesn't mean it's good for your eyes.

It's more than a personal "preference". I'd say its more accurate that some people's eyes are just more sensitive to reading on LCD screens vs paper or e ink.

I know that my eyes don't feel so strained when reading my kindle as I do reading on the iPad.

And since the kindle is so light and small, it's a no brainer to bring it along on trips in the same bag as the iPad.

I don't mean to discount your experience, but I get tired of people telling me I'm objectively wrong when it's not the case.

The problem is that people love to speak in absolutes.

Objectively, it is true that e ink renders text better than an iPad but subjectively this may only matter to some people who are more sensitive to text reproduction.

Same deal with the backlighting. Hurts my eyes to read the iPad in bed unless I have an external light turned on. Others are fine with it.

That's your opinion, I have had no problems (in terms of my eyes) reading for extensive periods. On my phone however, I have had a bit after some hours.

On the weight, I don't think it's so much the weight more as it is how you hold it/center of gravity. The iPad 2 from what I tried was much easier to hold due to it's curvature.

Either way, it's your opinion, but from where I stand the Kindle and e-readers will be a (even more) niche market in a few years down, if not non-existant (in terms of new products).

BTW I have a question about the kindle, does it support Arabic e-books, if so I may get one for my mom who reads in arabic and english. Doubt it, but just wondering.

This has probably been asked and answered a hundred times on here but I just got my ipad so humor me- best browser? Anything better than Safari? It's driving me crazy that I can't figure out how to highlight spoiler text on neogaf.

I am going to buy the next Kindle, because reading books on my iPad has been less than optimal for me, personally. It can get the job done, but e-ink is just so sexy and so cheap.

However, ereaders could never compare to the iPad for magazines and comic books.

This, I use my iPad for comics like crazy, magazines not so much but my family does. Though a colored e-reader may be interesting, newspapers/mags in color on a cheap portable device could be compelling.

There's a reason press releases can't be used for reference purposes.

Best APP to learn Japanese?

are you a total-to-pretty-much beginner?
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/human-japanese-hd/id419031017?mt=8

if so, you need this. awesomely-written introduction to the way japanese grammar works, and will set you up for further learning really well. it was seriously invaluable to me when i first came to japan and the language still sounded like moonspeak to me - it breaks everything down in a way that's logical and easy to understand for anyone who can speak english. i'd say this should be everyone's first step on the road to learning japanese, honestly. oh and there's a free version to check out!

for phrases and vocabulary, this is a good place to start:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/japanese-phrases-lessons/id303488128?mt=8

there's a free version, but it's just a well-presented universal flashcard app that i bought like over two years ago for my ipod touch and has since been updated incredibly frequently with new topics, etc - well worth the initial investment. i bought the advanced phrases version too.

as a basic study tool, i also recommend midori:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/midori-japanese-dictionary/id385231773?mt=8

it's a JDICT dictionary, of which there are many on the store, but this is really good for two reasons: 1) it has an excellent flash card/list interface, which is great for personalising study (for example, i'd make a list of kanji i didn't know yet had to know for a certain JLPT level), and 2) the kanji lookup feature is second-to-none, whether you're using handwriting recognition or doing it by components. plus it's really cheap and universal!

when you're more advanced, try this:
http://itunes.apple.com/jp/app/id284350526?mt=8

wisdom. another dictionary, but one aimed at japanese people studying english, which has the side benefit of making it infinitely more accurate and natural for english-japanese lookup - the sample sentences are fantastic. you can type pretty much anything in idiomatic english and it'll likely give you a real example or three of how to say it in japanese - you do need to have pretty functional kanji reading ability for this, though. it's not really a tool for learning the language, but it's now my most-used app by far.

hope this helps!

My girlfriends company has a bunch of ipad 2 just sitting in their boxes in a cupboard not being used...it pains me as she won't even try and blag one of them, despite being the fecking marketing manager.

Looks like I will have to actually buy one. :(

Got a question I'm hoping someone can answer.

I got my iPad 2 on launch day, and it suffers from light leak and it has a stuck pixel. I don't have an Apple store where I live but I'm going back through to the city that does have one in the next few days, so my question is:
A) I presume the light leak issue has been fixed. Just an issue with launch units, right?
B) Will they swap it over without any issues?

I'm from the UK if that makes any difference.
A) From my experience, it hasn't been fixed. I swapped my iPad 2 at the Birmingham Apple Store twice. All three had backlight bleed. The first one was the best actually.

B) Yes they will, although both times they didn't have any replacements in stock so I had to come in a second time... each time.

With the third example I asked for a refund. This is still being processed, as I had originally bought it from a Premium Apple Reseller and not an Apple Store. Unbelieveably, they deal with all of these refund cases in Texas. Even the woman from Applecare was surprised she was talking to someone from the UK. Seriously. It has been a ridiculous faff, but I won't bore you with the details.

In the meantime I bought another iPad 2, just to see whether I'd get lucky with the backlight on my fourth attempt. This one is much better. Still a slight uneven patch in one corner but not obscenely offensive like the other three, and indeed most other iPad 2s I've seen.

Nice, somebody hijacked my iTunes account to buy Texas Poker Pro chips - over 200€.
Thank God Apple works fast and everything is back to normal and I won't get billed.

Anyway, thanks for the Human Japanase-recommendation above. I'm about to start learning Japanese, too.

Argh, dropped my iPad in a sleeve yesterday and the top left corner of the bezel glass is shattered. Has anyone had experience with apple replacing iPads with broken glass for free? They replaced my iPhone earlier in the year, but it's a 2 hour drive to the Apple store and I don't know if they'll be so nice again.

They'll do the first one for free. You may be out of luck (it's on account-by-account basis)

Hi guys anyone encountered this ?

http://i51.tinypic.com/2u44t51.jpg
(photo not mine, but I have the same problem)

At first I didn't noticed it but when I compared it to my friend's, the colors are different. :/

Yep. I have one that was bought on iPad 2's launch and a new one I bought this weekend. Did some side-by-side comparisons and I concluded that the newer one was more blue, the older one felt more red. The newer one was brighter at the same brightness setting than the old one, but at the top end of the slider they were both equally bright. It could also be the beta software on the old iPad vs stock iOS 4 on the newer one too - basically the brightness curve on both felt different for one reason or another.

edit: I'd bet big money that the top one in that pic is an "old" iPad 2 and the bottom one is a new one. One final comment - the newer iPad 2 had far less bleeding than the old one. Maybe I just got lucky on that point.

I know this is the iPad 2 thread, but I pretty much treat it as the default iPad thread.

re : iPad 1

it's neary a year and a half old now.

I think I'm feeling the crunch of the battery life decreasing, which I suppose is normal. No hard tests, I just feel that it's less than 10 hours. Maybe even the region of 7-8. Maybe it's all the new software being demanding, or my increased use?

Also, I feel the oleo phobic coating is wearing off. It gets much treasure, much faster. does that happen? Is the coating meant to be permanent or does it eventually wear?

Man, love the iPad. It has changed the way I compute.

Well to follow up, I was at the store today.

They swapped the iPad without really any questions. When he was checking the condition of the screen, it turned out there was also some water under it.

The replacement iPad doesn't appear to have any light leakage, or if it does it's certainly not bad enough for me to notice unlike the lauch one I had.

I was under the impression that the iPads they give as replacements are usually refurbished. If so, I'm impressed because there doesn't seems to be a scratch, mark or blemish on the whole thing. Looks brand new.

The whole process was really quick and hassle free. Certainly one of the best customer services I've experienced.

I have a question. Someone I know is selling an ipad 2 used cheap, but they lost the reciept for it. If it ever messed up after I bought it, will I still be able to take it into the Apple store for repair or does the warranty become invalid? I thought the warranty depended on the serial number and started once the thing had been registered. Help anyone?

receipts don’t mean shit after a couple weeks (big box store return window). warranty is based on serial number on the unit.

you can enter that into an apple support site to see what warranty is available on it.

If you're sure it's not stolen, sure buy it.

Stolen devices will have voided warranties.

So I went on a huge fuck itunes rant some pages out.

iTunes is still a big piece of shit but I've found a suitable yet annoying work around.

With that out the way, I think my only issue with iPad is file storage, I hate how every app has it's own file storage and they can't read anything from each other. Then I also hate how I gotta connect to shittunes to add files to my pad.

Anyways

Quote me

If you read comics on your iPad and you're using Comiczeal over Comicglass you are bad! This is singlehandedly my favorite app and well worth the 99 cents. Like its a near day and night difference in terms of speed and responsiveness between the two apps.

You don't. Get FileBrowser or FileConnect and transfer your media files wirelessly. I only use iTunes for firmware updates and backing up apps, maybe connect once a month at most.

Absolutely, ComicGlass is tops for comics, with Bookman Pro a close second. CloudReaders is the best free alternative.

Zeal is overpriced and outdated, not having had an update for a full year. I think people still recommend it because it was the original iPad comic reader, but it hasn't been the best for a good while.

Can the iPad 2 get screen burn-in? I like using it as an alarm clock, but I've been putting it into sleep mode because I didn't want to chance burn-in as a result of the same image being on the screen for hours at a time.

I'd like to be able to plug in my iPad overnight and leave the digital alarm clock app on so that I can see what the time is at night.

On a related note, is it harmful to the battery to leave the iPad 2 on charge every night?

Just bought an IPAD2 as a gift to brother, now I finalized installing apps and when I click on it on Ipad it pops and closes immediately? Whats happening, its my first apple product and don't know what to do. Itunes said syncing was done but don't know how to procede.

Realistically? No. If you plug it in, leave the screen on 24/7 for a month? Maybe. Since it sounds like you use it for other things it should be fine.

Not really; the battery and charger are built to stop at a certain point.

Absolutely yes. I asked about it in this thread a long time ago and people said it wasn't happening to theirs and that it was a manufacturing defect on mine. Four iPads later.... they all have screen burn.... I'm confident that they all have this issue. But it seems nobody notices it apart from me, so you're probably alright.

I see image retention on the iPad 2 after less than 5 minutes of a static screen.

Thanks. Google searches have yielded some other people saying they've experienced image retention too, so I'd rather not chance it. I'll just buy a decent digital alarm clock.

Crazymoogle said:
IR != burn in
True, but they are equally as irritating. Image retention fades, but not quickly enough on these panels. No other LCD I've owned has the problem. Only iPads. And on the first iPad 2 I had, the IR was effectively a burn in, as it never completely faded. I've now learnt to never leave the keyboard on the screen for longer than it takes to type this.

If it's that bad, take it to an Apple store. Different LCDs can certainly have different levels of IR but if you're suffering lasting ghosting, that's definitely a manufacturing defect.

I leave mine on for hours (that is, re-opening whenever it goes to sleep) and no problems or noticeable IR while working.

No one replied? Try a hard reboot. Hold the top button n the round button in the middle of the bottom screen area n hold both for a while til the iPad reboots...
