Apple iPad 2 |OT|

iPhone explorer is a program that might allow you to put photos on there. You can also try emailing them all, putting them on photobucket or some other site that there's an iPad app, and downloading them through that way.

You're going to want to update your firmware one day and it'll take forever to sync all your stuff then. If you sync regularly its really short each time.

Media Explorer -> Settings (wrench icon, top right) -> check off the file you want to delete -> Trashcan (bottom right)

Yeah, you're doing something strange. I plug mine in and it does a backup and then syncs. It's not a hardship or an inconvenience.

I'm not sure what you're talking about when you say it deleted your apps. Did you sync to another computer originally? Is the computer you're using now signed to in to the right account?

Anyway, you'll need to sync once to update when iOS 5 comes out, then you won't have to do it again. Although you should, because it's easy and there's no reason not to do it unless you don't have a computer.

If he's never synced it, it will take a while, as it collects the info from apps and other data. My backups are in total, about a 1 GB per device. I sync regularly, so backups are incremental and very short.

And of course, if it's first time syncing, then apps MAY get removed, as it detects a deletion of the app on the computer. However, if it HAS been synced before and you've acquired apps on the iPad, it should actually ask to deliver the apps back to the computer.

Something I've always wondered about app installation is that the app packages you download are not necessarily the same as that which gets installed. There's some compression etc.

So what happens when you install an app via your iDevice? We know it will sync the package back to your computer when you next sync - so does it keep the installer around until you do this?

Or does it just copy relevant folders and that's the installer anyway?

Both at the same time. Like how I can still use the trackpad and keyboard on my Macbook even thouh I have a magicpad and external keyboard attached.

Hmmmm, damn you GAF! I've been super happy with my iPad, but after reading 2 pages ago, I checked for light bleeding, and sure enough, I've got some. Well, i guess I should say thanks, as I'll be returning this to Best Buy this coming week...

If you have an Apple Store nearby, go there for better service--doesn't matter that you bought it at Best Buy.

You don't need to sync to transfer media to your iPad; in fact, I recommend against it.

Get FileBrowser or FilesConnect and simply browse your computer and/or network drives wirelessly. You'll be able to transfer files without iTunes and without physically connecting the iPad via USB to your computer.

FilesConnect is particularly good as it uses AFP protocol (only app to do so) and will allow transferring entire folders in one operation.

FileBrowser is cheaper and has a faster, easier to use UI, but it has less options.

Don't bother, especially if you've been happy with your iPad. If you're not seeing it during normal use, forget it.

You're just as likely to get a replacement unit with more light bleeding.

There's a button that looks like a spanner on the top right of the screen, tap that, then you can tap a video to select it, then use the bin icon on the bottom right

My bluetooth ipad keyboard has a button to bring up the onscreen keyboard, so you can work it that way. I guess your kb needs to have the button though.
 
Fucking Google calendars, how do they work?

I have a Google calendar shared with my girlfriend, it shows up fine on the browser, but I can't for the life of me get it to show up on my iPad or iPhone in any way.

I've done the https://www.google.com/calendar/iphoneselect thing, and the calendar/email account is currently set up as an Exchange solution.

Is there any way possible to get the damn calendar show up on my iOS devices?

Have you followed the instructions from http://www.google.com/mobile/sync/ It's been a while since I set up my account, but I think you have to go to that site on your iOS device and select which calendars you want to show up.

I assume it's brand new. I may take a small while to reach optimum, and may need to be calibrated within the first week as wel (empty it until it spturns itself off, and recharge fully or somethinglp like that - I assume this for most apple products).

What is 'not great' battery life? Remember, doing certain things like using increased brightness will shorten battery life, as will keepi on radios when they're not connected.
 
I really wish certain apps had a trial version that lasted a few days or so. There's a lot I'm interested in, but don't feel comfortable spending $7 or $8 on. And when there's no free version it becomes a matter of chance on whether or not I'll get my money's worth from the app.
 
24 hour (or more) trial versions would get so damn abused it’s not even funny.

maybe a couple hours? I think android has a trial version for a few hours. didn’t it used to be a day but they reduced the time?

anyway, for 10 bucks or less, I’m not gonna feel any sympathy if a purchase isn’t the best thing ever.

According to my Calendar, I have 64 million appointments due. When are they going to fix this? It's not like Outlook is some weird edge case.

There's the E*TRADE app that streams quotes and live CNBC video, if you have an account with them.

If not, there's also one by Yahoo that gives you real-time quotes.

There may be others, but those are the only ones I've used, personally.
 
So my father and I got Pages for our devices and it's a pretty great document editor. We need it for professional uses. Mostly doing budgets, menus and stuff.

However, some things really bother me. You see, my father isn't a computer person, so the iPad has been awesome for him. But it's hard for me to explain to him that he can't be writing an e-mail to a client and then attach a document with a budget to go along with it. No. He has to attach it first and only then write the e-mail. To have a specific order for doing such actions is weird and puzzling even for me, but so much more for him.

Then he asks me how can he send multiple documents and I have to tell him that he can't. It's one at a time. "But it would possible on a computer, right?" and I'm all like "yeah :/".

It's also a pity that Apple blocked third apps like Dropbox which we could use to share documents in a much more efficient manner than emailing to each other (and again, one at a time).

I guess iDisk would come handy for that, but yeah :P on that thought, do you think that with iCloud will be possible to have (some) stuff shared/synced with other users or will it be one-user only?

So yeah, I don't know if iOS5 will fix all this but it can't come soon enough. There are a lot of cords to be cut on this post-PC device.

Yeah, there's work that needs to be done with the iPad and its apps overall. Then again, the idea of emailing a document should be going the way of the do-do in my opinion.

Obviously, I still do it, but dealing with files is something I want to be rid of.

As for the rest of your post, I don't think that iOS needs the old file dealing system, but it needs something. I mean, to be writing an email and have an option to attach stuff to it seems to be a pretty trivial feature. And for example, all this "open this document with..." stuff is pretty great but it needs to work across the board in a more consistent manner. But I have no doubt that things will get there. The iOS evolution story has been tremendous so far, and even if they don't completely nail the "no need for a computer" thing in iOS 5, it won't take too long after that I'm sure. I just wish we were already there :P

I think they're heading to iDisk for iWork, and I think they'll likely stick with email for sharing. Dammit.

I'm not sure how that works, but I don't think they need to create links for specific third party apps, just have an API that third parties can use or something. Which they don't for iWork. Still, all the wording aside, I can't upload Pages documents to Dropbox and that's the matter :P

Well, if iDisk keeps existing and even goes free when iCloud launches, it becomes a very valid manner of sharing stuff, at least among Apple devices, which fortunately is the case.

You can request refunds and they are usually honored if it's within a short time. It's kind of hidden within iTunes account settings though. You can Google how to do it.

I have a feeling they'll be accessible by yourself on any devices, but sharing to other users? Not sure. I have no info, just speculating.

Android has refunds for 15 mins, it used to be for 24 hours and was indeed abused. Trials work well and are different from giving refunds
 
So I just received a Ipad 2. 16g.

I am on campus and everything is cool but I have no clue how to connect to the internet. My school has free wifi as a guest or secure. One with password one without. I can sorta connect to the guest version but I cannot for the life of me seem to access anything that requires internet. Do I need to talk to the campus tech dude?

You don't get a popup that you have to click "accept" for? Should pop up in browser when you try to go to a website (if that's what your unsecured network does).
 
Anyone know of a way to sync iCal, iPhone calendar, and iPad calendar without having to sync to computer every time?
 
When I set up my Ipad I didn't associate it with my itunes account could that be the problem? Do I need to register my device with the university?

google sync services. move all your data to google calendar. enable it in all 3 devices.

note that in the fall with iOS 5, the same feature will be enabled in iCLoud and will require fewer steps to setup

It's less than a month away at this point. Better to just wait for iOS 5 since it won't require any additional setup.

Check the Campus IT website. Some campuses use a secure VPN to connect to their Wifi. I always had to connect via Cisco IPSEC to get on to UCLA after logging on to the WiFi when I went there.

Will iCloud calendar stuff allow me to share stuff like with Google's services, so my girlfriend and co-workers can have shared calendars they can implement into their programs?

When they announced it, Apple said it would have shared calendars.

I have not used the feature but maybe someone else using the beta has.
