So I just received a Ipad 2. 16g.

I am on campus and everything is cool but I have no clue how to connect to the internet. My school has free wifi as a guest or secure. One with password one without. I can sorta connect to the guest version but I cannot for the life of me seem to access anything that requires internet. Do I need to talk to the campus tech dude?

Check your university website. Mine has specific instructions for how to connect iOS devices to their wifi.

google sync services. move all your data to google calendar. enable it in all 3 devices.

note that in the fall with iOS 5, the same feature will be enabled in iCLoud and will require fewer steps to setup

I don't know if alone on this, but when I try to use Google Syns at m.google.com/sync, it just says that your device is not supported, whether it's my iPhone or iPad. Is there a specific reason as to it says this, when their setup page specifically says they support iOS.

Thinking of jumping in. I have learned that the foreflgiht app is a huge help for flight training.

Good time to do so, or should I wait for iPad3?

I got my iPad about 2 months ago and it is one of my favorite gadgets ever. The threat of a new version will be there every year, I say jump in. Even more so if you have a good reason for getting one, like flight training.

Depends on you. iPad 3 won't be out until Spring. If you want it now, you could always sell the 2 and pay the difference when it comes out.

If you have the money, go ahead and jump. I got $400 for my iPad, which made the iPad2 cost $100. You'll get at least $100 worth of enjoyment between now and the refresh.

you need to setup Google sync as an exchange account on the iPhone and ipad. there will be instructions if you Google Google sync iPhone calendar exchange. it’s somewhere on google’s sync site.

This was Easy.

Haven't updated to Beta 6 yet but has anyone experienced problems on YouTube.com or other inline video players?

They either won't load the picture at all or it will be half-split offscreen.

I don't know where to post this since it pertains to both iPhone and iPad...

Are there benefits to a Twitter client besides the official one if I mostly just follow people?

I had brought up twitteriffic recently as they just enabled tweet marker for keeping position synced between devices. that, by itself, was enough for me to dump tweetbot on the iPhone and twitter on the Mac.

you can try the latest free versions for iPhone, ipad and Mac.

you can pay 5 bucks to drop the ads (plus another 10? for Mac) and use multiple accounts.

iPad 3 question: Assuming the iPad 3 has a Retina display will it also require a new SoC (4 times the resolution will be much more taxing than the current display)?

I am thinking about buying an iPad 2 for school but I'm not sure how useful it will actually be. For starving-student gaf how has it been for you so far? Also will 16 gigs be enough? How many apps/pdfs/textbooks is that, roughly?

I actually bought one for this semester. A good friend of my suggested it because you can take notes on Google docs and the other apps made for word processing.

16 gigs can hold a shit load of text. Probably more than a kindle can.

Well, there is always a new SoC (system-on-a-chip) with each new generation of iOS devices anyway, but they usually don't update the GPU.

I don't know my GPUs, so I don't know if the present dual-core SGX543 can handle it. I do know that it seems like only about 2 games have really targeted the new GPU (Infinity Blade and Real Racing 2 HD), with most apps still targeting the old GPUs, so there still might be a lot of room for the GPU to do its work.

current GPU is '9x' faster than ipad1. So they could stick with that, but then developers would only be able to target approximately iPad 1 GPU performance due to the extra pixels etc. If they want to push that, and/or keep pace with iphone 5 performance, they'll need to increase the GPU. but timing wise I'm not sure whats available then - is the GPU Sony are using in the vita fully available?

The iPad 2 and Sony's Vita are using the same GPU core. Apple has the dual-core version, while Sony is using the quad-core version.

That's just the PowerVR GPU design in the A5 with four 'cores' instead of two. Given it seems next year will see a move to 28nm I imagine we'll see new silicon, which I hope is PowerVR Series 6.

Is SoC the same thing as the GPU? I would imagine the A6 would make its debut on iPad 3 as Apple wouldn't want to sacrifice speed for higher resolution. They'd want to trumpet the display along side a speed boost and the same battery life. But if the GPU is different then...I don't know. Educate me.

A SoC is a system on a chip. A CPU and a GPU embedded in the same silicon. Even if they change only one part if it, it's still a new SoC.

And yes, each new iOS device will ship with a new iteration of the Apple SoC used on iOS devices. It's a yearly product too (currently numbered to match the iPhone generation it will power).

The iPhone 4 has the same GPU as the 3GS. Based on precedent, the A6 will almost certainly have a faster CPU but the GPU could be the same.

Alright, I hope some kind soul can help me out.

I noticed LogMeIn Ignition is having its biggest price drop so far (still pretty damn expensive, though). I was wondering, what does this app do better/worse than Splashtop? Is it worth splurging the money for it?

As far as I have understood, a major difference between Splashtop and LogMeIn is that Splashtop is limited to your own LAN, while LogMeIn works online. Am I wrong? Any other stuff to consider?

The 1st generation 32gb Ipad is on the Apple refurb site for $399. Is the performance different enough to make it still worth getting a Ipad 2? I don't see any use in the camera.

I wouldn't get a first gen iPad. Be patient, Apple will sell the second gen for 399 when the iPad 3 comes out.

Don't get the first gen. Lots of apps that have issues on first gen run just fine on iPad 2.

So where would you guys recommend buying an iPad?

Also, I am buying a 3G model for the GPS unit in it since I'm using it for flight training, and it will work without any ATT or Verizon contract. Is there any difference at all in the ATT vs. Verizon versions?

ATT is GSM and Verizon is CDMA, so the ATT version comes with a microsim slot which means you can use a sim card from any gsm carrier in the world. Beyond that they function the same though.

I broke down and bought one for school. Would people mind telling me some good school apps, some good general apps, and some good for fun apps? I plan on downloading Ascension and maybe ticket to ride.

Flipboard (free) is a great way to read news and Groove Coaster (.99) is an awesome rhythm game if you're into that.

Carcassonne is the best game i own on ios. It is a near perfect implementation (only major flaw is the current lack of expansions, but they have at least announced they are working on some.)

You seem adamant about how much you like goodreader! What makes it so much better than just the base pdf or a free pdf reader? Also Flipboard is sweet looks cool! How could I have forgotten about Carcassone! So many board games to buy!

Splashtop can work over the internet.

either a) Use the Google discovery feature, where you just put in your google account into the iPad and streamer clients. or b) Port forward the port Splashtop uses from your router and then connecting to your IP and the appropriate port will work outside the LAN.

Let me also throw some love to "Zite" as a general new reader. Great customization and a breeze to use.

I got a question for you guys,

Do you ever take your iPad outside and with you?

Because recently, I have had an urge to just take it with me, maybe play a game or read some news while I'm waiting for the bus and is in the bus on my ride to work. But at the same time, I have this fear, of someone stealing it from me or keeping an eye on me if I use it.

How do you feel about taking out your iPad?

Zite is pretty solid but the lack of updates really hurt it. Since it came out, Flipboard has updated big time and it's way better than Zite now, in my opinion.

Nope, unless I'm traveling it mostly stays at home. I have an iPhone for when I'm out of the house.

I've seen people with iPads on the train/bus and I put them in the same category as people who use laptops on the train/bus. If it's necessary for you okay, but personally I'm never in a position where I'm on a bus and absolutely need to use an iPad or laptop.
