I got a question for you guys,

Do you ever take your iPad outside and with you?

Because recently, I have had an urge to just take it with me, maybe play a game or read some news while I'm waiting for the bus and is in the bus on my ride to work. But at the same time, I have this fear, of someone stealing it from me or keeping an eye on me if I use it.

How do you feel about taking out your iPad?
I've been taking it too class with me.

goes everywhere with me on a day to day basis.

went to USA for holidays. brought it. got ATnT wireless. went everywhere and used ipad/yelp/maps/tripadvisor/freewifi

I got my Jot stylus yesterday. Quick impressions are that it's pretty nice. If you have one of the Boxwave clones, it's a bit longer and heavier than that so it feels more like an actual pen. The cap is a screw on type on both ends, so when you put it on the back it gives a solid bit of extra length to it.

As they mentioned on their Kickstarter page before, some apps appear to have a built in offset, but in the ones I've tried it's not a huge amount and workable enough at least. I think the biggest difference between it and the Boxwave types is simply the noise of the stylus on the screen, since you now have a hard tip vs squishy one. Tap on the screen with some hard object and you can sort of get an idea of the sound.

One other thing is that it makes you more aware of lag. When drawing/writing with a finger you obscure the point and therefore some lag a bit, but under the clear disc it's a bit more noticeable.

edit: Speaking of writing, has anyone tried 7notes before? Apparently it's another one with handwriting recognition.

Maybe they will change it because the Vita will make quad core versions cheaper.
Sony probably makes* their own SoC, just as Apple makes their own. If the Vita brings Sony's prices down it doesn't necessarily mean anything for Apple.

*By "make" I mean design the chip using licensed ARM and PowerVR core designs, and farming it out to whatever CPU foundry like Samsung or TSMC or whoever.

You seem adamant about how much you like goodreader! What makes it so much better than just the base pdf or a free pdf reader? Also Flipboard is sweet looks cool! How could I have forgotten about Carcassone! So many board games to buy!
Think of GoodReader as a sort of traditional filesystem for iOS, cause iOS doesn't have one itself. It's not exactly the same as that but it's close enough, and can connect to nearly anything like Dropbox, FTP, websites, SSH/SFTP, etc.

I don't even like it that much as a reader honestly, but I keep it around as a semi central file storage area and network file access app.

If that's what you mainly use GoodReader for, might I suggest FilesConnect? It's probably the most complete "file system" for iPad.

It does everything GoodReader does and more filewise (including AFP transfer protocol, SMB, NAS access, Facebook, etc.).

well i do live in a country with zero risk of that happening, but i take mine to work every day and read the times on the train. i don't really use it at home much.

Most places in the US I wouldn't dream of it (save in a library or something), but here in Korea I have no qualms about it.

I take it to work with me everyday, and if I'm eating lunch alone or need to get out of the house and go to a cafe, I take it with me.

I would hate not having it at work, at the very least.

I take mine out with me. I definitely keep my eye on it, but I have no fear of someone robbing me for it. That would be ludicrous (I wanna lick lick lic . . . nevermind).
I think that's part of the pleasure of it. It's ultra mobile, and good no matter where you are. Watch a video, read a book, play a game, or most likely, browse GAF. Mind you, I use my iPhone for a good bit of that as well, but to be honest, since getting my iPad 2, I don't use my phone nearly as much. With almost everything, if the iPhone does it, the iPad does it better.

I would love to take mine to work, but then everyone would come and watch in our breaks, which would be annoying. Can't use it while working either, as I work in a retail shop.

Yo guys, any good Photo Gallery app for the ipad ?

I hated how iTunes work on uploading photos.

Is there an app that lets you upload photos but still use the iOS "Photos" app ?

People walk around with their iPads out all over NYC. Don't whip it out in a bad neighborhood, or at night in a place you might be targeted.

I saw that a while back and the look of the UI in the screenshots actually put me off...that and mainly that the other protocols don't mean much to me since I'd just go through SSH anyway to access my stuff, both on the LAN and remotely.

Do you mean upload through another app, but still view through the built in Photos app? If so I'm not sure that's possible. That said there are a bunch of other gallery type apps that work fine for viewing within their apps themselves. I got Minimal Folio a while back cause I liked how it appeared to work (simple clean setup and presentation), but there's fancier and more thorough options out there too.

Why wouldnt you take it out here in the states?

Apparently you don't know what "most places in the US" are like. :P

There are places you wouldn't wan't to have your iPad out, sure. But there are places like that everywhere.

Do people really think America is that ghetto?

I didn't think I lived in a particularly ghetto place in America (where I grew up, by the way), but I still constantly felt like a target any time I held something worth more than $100. Maybe it's a personal problem.

Exactly. Most of America isn't like that though.

Going to go buy this morning.

Smart case the best, or should I go with something else?
I think the smart cover + something like this is the best you can buy. It's still super thin, you get all the functionality of the smart cover, and the back is protected.

Agreed. I use the Nuu BaseCase, which is similar. It's twice the price of the Acase though. It's nice because you can still see the Apple logo through the back (it's looks more transparent than in that photo), but it's nicely rubberised. I think it also has a more elegant design for the cutaways than the Acase.

Yeah, whichever one. The main point is that the Smart Cover + a compatible back cover is the way to go. Unless you don't care about the back, in which case the Smart Cover by itself is fine.

I'd also recommend a sleeve if you're going to throw it in a larger bag. The nice thing about the sleeves is that they will continue to work as long as future models maintain the screen size. I've been using the same one I bought for the iPad 1 with the 2.

Wow just got an ipad 2, i got the launch day ipod touch and that was my only past with ios device. The browser was terrible, got my ipad 2 today and wow we have come along way since then, browsing the internet is nearly as fast as my laptop.

Can you access a NAS via SSH without having a computer on? One main benefit of FileBrowser and FilesConnect is that you don't have to leave a computer running 24-7 to access your network files.

On the note of sleeves, any good ones with an extra pocket for the wireless keyboard?

Finally got myself one of these. I need a good IRC client. Any suggestions? Linkinus looks decent but I wanted some input first.

Ipad cant be charged over usb.
But iPad 2 can!

Ah, ok. Judging from their website it looks to be iPhone only too.

I thought that it can be charged through powered USB 2.0 ports or any USB 3.0 ports. Someone in the Touchpad megathread mentioned this, but may have been mistaken.

DrForester said:
How? because I have it plugged in now, and it says "not Charging"

I think you have to not be using it when plugged into a computer or something to charge. You can't be using it and charging it at the same time unless it's plugged into the wall with its charger.

Usb 3.0 yes but i dont think 2.0 has the wattage to do it.

Could the dock have something to do with it? There were two type of docks at Best Buy, one in a small box, and one with a smaller box.

Yeah. My iPad 2 charges fine over my USB cable via my MacBook Pro. Even when booted into Windows. (Though it needs to be actually logged in to start charging.)

Not sure...my computer basically acts as my NAS really (Mac mini with some drives attached). I think on Linux based NAS units you're usually able to install/enable SSH anyway, and for remote connections I'd be using SSH to begin with.

I might pick it up if it goes on sale for cheap again, but it's not a huge deal for my setup.

If you're on Windows, it'll most likely show "not charging" and won't supply extra charging power through USB. If you turn the display off, it should still slowly charge.
USB does 500mA normally, and has a 1A charging spec or something. I believe the iPad shows the "not charging" on 500mA, but will charge if the screen is off (although I'm not sure if it also needs to be idle too, like not playing music), while with 1A you'll charge with it on.

I remember some PCs/mobos got updates to enable the 1A charging so look into that, otherwise just leave the screen off if you need it to charge while connected.

This, screen off, left it in for a half hour, battery percentage has gone up. Using USB 3.0

Now that I'm getting set up, what are some must have apps?

For my foreflight already for class, and kindle for my books.

I've never had an iphone.

Things I would like:

best video player (I.E. plays most formats. divx, .mkv, h264, etc.)
Best word processor (take notes in class)
Best tower defense game (loved Robot Defense on droid)

Other things you think I should have.
