Apple iPad 2 |OT|

I've now had a iphone4s since launch and the talk about ipad2 being too low res (well in comparison to iphone4's ret display) I find to be just silly. It looks fine. I switch between them both all the time as I have both handy and there really isn't like much a difference. Not saying that a ret display ipad3 isn't desirable but its not "too low reso" and reads like uninformed dribble

It's not dribble. A 4x increase in rez is going to be huge and impossible to go back from.

no, it's definitely low res when reading text. we hold ipads closer to our eyes than most desktop computer screens so we see pixels easier. well... a least I do. And I know I'm not totally alone in this opinion.

I don't have to squint and look for pixels when reading text on the ipad. it's just there. it's still fine for most things (the pixel edges are much less noticeable to my eyes with color pictures, for example) but I welcome the resolution bump and expect for it to make a real obvious improvement.

also, they better implement that laminated screen tech they got on the iphone 4/4S. makes everything look even better.

Hey GAF so I'm planning to get an iPad but I'm just worrying about the next refresh. If they announce a new one and the old one gets bumped down in price will I receive the difference? Or should I just wait for the next reiteration?
New ones is weeks away, just wait.

I don't think the current screen looks bad, I read plenty of books on it now. That said, the new screen will blow the old screen away, no question.

So because it doesn't bother you that you can count the pixels of your battery status, it's uninformed dribble? Okay.

Right over your heads.

He's pretty much in agreement with all of you about the benefits of a resolution bump with Retina. Just that statements of the iPad 2 being "too low res" are ridiculous hyperbole, at least for the mass market. I happen to agree with that. I'm reading an iBook (Halo: Fall of Reach) and have no problems with the resolution.

I don't think it's hyperbole at all. Text looks like shit. It's jaggy, not sharp at all and I find it pretty distracting. I'd never read a book on the current screen.

Yeah it's very hard to read a book on iPad currently due to the low rez screen. Yet reading on iPhone is a good experience due to retina. I'll likely rarely touch my kindle again once iPad 3 hits, the retina display should make it a fantastic reading experience. Currently? Not so much.

It is NOT hard to read a book on the iPad, currently. Might not be super pretty, and might be annoying to stare at for too long, but it's not hard.

I also own a Kindle, and prefer to read on it. But I've read plenty of books on the iPad over the last year or so. That said, bring on the retina.

iPad 2 res is in a far better situation than the res of the iPhone 3GS before it moved to retina. With such a small screen, that thing was horrendous for any sort of reading.

That said, there's certainly room for improvement. I'm sure once I see the iPad 3 in the stores, all the sudden my iPad 2 will look like a bloody mess. Gotta start that iPad 4 fund pronto!

Yeah, anyone who says it's "hard" is just being difficult. It's just like reading web pages on a regular monitor. Although, anyone who says reading on an iPad is better than on a Kindle is just absurd.

The iPad 3 improvements will likely make it much better, though, but it's still very unlikely that I'll switch back from reading on my Kindle.

Hey Gaf... I need help.

I'm planning on buying an ipad today (I know, I know, ipad 3 will come out soon, but whatever, I want one now), and I'm researching cases. I don't want anything that adds too much bulk, so a slim case and screen cover seems to be the ticket. However, what I don't like is the idea with the smart cover, that the cover will just flap around (when open) if you hold the device with one hand for example. Are there any covers that stay in place on the back (via magnets, strap, or whatever) to keep the cover out of the way until I need it again?

I had a slipcase for my old HP Touchpad, and that worked fine, but I don't really want to go that route again.

The official one actually latches on if you have it flipped open. It's not quite as strong as when attached to the front, but it'll definitely stay put. I never take mine off, and that's exactly how I hold it when open.

Right. No hyperbole, at all. :lol

Targus 360 case. Not bulky, and very easy to use. I highly recommend it.

The smart cover is still the best. Just fold it in half against itself or flip it over so your holding the open side with your hand.

I use a slim rear cover that has a gap for the Smart Cover hinge. I used to use the Smart Cover regularly, but these days it stays off around the house, and I only use it as a screen protector when I want to take it somewhere in a bag.

You can hold the Smart Cover open without it flapping around if you hold the edge opposite the hinge, or fold it in half as has been mentioned. Alternatively if you use a very thin rear cover or go without, the weaker magnet on the Smart Cover that activates the screen lock is just strong enough to hold itself to the back of the iPad when flipped open.

But for me, the Smart Cover adds a fair amount of weight to a device that is already too heavy for one-handed e-reader style use, so I tend to remove it altogether.

Right. No hyperbole, at all. :lol
I'd say it's a slight exaggeration, but certainly reading comics is not enjoyable and would benefit massively from doubling the resolution.

So if fold the smart cover in half (while it's open, it will stay in place without having me to hold it against the ipad?

I'm having a hard time explaining, I guess... the closest analog to this is my old Kindle 3 case, where it has a strap that both keeps it closed, and at the same time keeps the cover in place when it's open and you're using the device.

Oh, ok. That sounds ideal for my situation then.

eh, I've no problems reading Marvel comics on my iPad 2. I bought the Civil War, and enjoyed reading it.

Give the Targus 360 case a look. It has a strap like you're looking for.

It's workable, but I find myself zooming in too regularly to enjoy the full fidelity of a scene. With double the res, I'd be able to leave it on my preferred 'fit to width' zoom setting most of the time.

Same goes for digital versions of print magazines.

I pick these two out, because I really can't see why anyone would want to read a book on this thing when an e-reader does a much better job. But an LCD tablet device should be ideal for full colour material like comics and magazines, and at the moment it's simply not good enough.

What? Comics look great on that screen! They'll look better on the 3, of course, but come on!

There are some visually picky people in here. Lol.

The retina display is going to make a huge difference with the iPad 3. Considering how much these devices are used to read (web, magazines, books), it's going to be a big deal. Same way it was difficult going back to an iPhone 3G/3GS after experiencing the iPhone 4's brilliant screen.

The only thing I wish, and I doubt it will happen, is that Apple uses optical lamination on the iPad 3's screen. This is something that isn't really talked about, but a bit reason the screen on the 4/4S is so good is thanks to this process of bonding the display to the cover glass. Makes the images on screen look like they are on the glass rather than being looked at under glass. It makes a HUGE difference.

By the way, should I make an iPad 3 discussion thread?

Please re-read what I'm saying... yes, the colour reproduction is great, and this should be an ideal comic-reading device, but the resolution is just not good enough, and you need to zoom in constantly to see the full fidelity of a scene.

Right, it works fine for me. I had no problems reading Civil War, and I'm going to buy another Marvel collection soon.

And you're assuming everyone has an e-reader, or wants to buy one. They are better, sure, but iPad works fine for now.

The dumbest thing you could do is buy an iPad now. Even if you don't give a shit about iPad 3 and want an iPad 2, there's a rumour that iPad 2's won't be discontinued and will drop in price If you want to buy used, expect used prices to drop $100+ the moment iPad 3 in announced.

Same goes for magazines. I bought an Edge sub for the iPad and I regretted it. Can't read the articles when you're zoomed out, need to zoom in quite a bit to read the columns and that sucks on a 10" device. iPad 3 should fix that.

I don't have an e-reader either, I'm just saying I don't want to read books on my iPad.

Yes indeed, although it doesn't fix the size of the text. Mags like Edge will still have to be zoomed in a bit to reach a comfortable position simply because the text is so small. But it'll certainly be more comfortable on the eyes at any level of zoomage.

Actually, that's a very good point and just as important to the upgrade in res. I've definitely noticed this when looking at my iPad 2 verses my wife's iPhone 4.

I don't have an e-reader either, I'm just saying I don't want to read books on my iPad.

To be fair, I only tried reading these books because I got over $80 in iTunes giftcards for Christmas. So why not try it out, right?

I was expecting my reading experience to be bad, but it worked out fine.

I realize that, but I don't really care. I get an employee discount through walmart anyway, so I'll pay less than most people do anyway.

I'm mostly getting it as a remote for my TV setup and what not. If/when the new one comes out with features that I want, I'll probably sell this one off and get that one.

Point is, even if a new one is released and announced soon, supply issues will likely make it at least another month before I'll be able to get my hands on one, and that's if I'm able to order one the moment they become available. Yea, I pick a crummy time to want one, but I've already made peace with that in my mind.

That's what they all say. Soon as you get ahold of it it'll basically replace your home computer. And you'll instantly regret not waiting for iPad 3. It'll be annouced in a matter of weeks.

LEave the guy alone, jeez, if he wants to buy it let him buy it.

There is always something bigger and better round the corner when it comes to tech.

This isn't a "hey, maybe there's something new coming but who knows" thing. The new iPad is in all likelihood definitely coming soon and then another iteration a year from now. It really is almost unimaginably stupid to buy a new iPad right now.

Yeah, I know the impatience when it comes to tech...but really, it's not like he has to wait 6 months. It's a month tops, I'm expecting an announcement in feb for an early march release. Also, this isn't just a tweaked design, the retina display is going to be a big deal.

Still it's his choice.

There is always something better around the corner but we are literally just a matter weeks away from release more than likely. It'll be very hard to buy an iPad 2 and then a few days later have Apple do their press conference to showcase how iPad 3 shits all over the iPad 2 in every way imaginable. Which is what will be happening in Feb.

Like I said, I know it's coming, and at another time, I'd be echoing the same comments as you guys.

I'll be jailbreaking it anyway, and it's very unlikely I'll be able to do that with the new ipad anytime soon. Even if I do get the ipad 3, I'll probably gift this one to my mom for mothers day or something.

Why do I do this to myself.

Just listed my 64GB iPad 2 on Craigslist to see if it gets any hits.

What should I price it at? If I do sell it, I'd probably just go with a 32GB iPad 3 since I wouldn't lose too much in the selling process.

If I don't sell it...I'll be fine.

I think.

I had the same iPad as you, sold mine for $600 a week ago. Like you, if i get an iPad 3 it will be 32gb. 64gb was overkill for me.

Hi,

anyone know how to get the ipad to default to one of my emails instead of another?

I just sent an important email from a personal email and I prefer that it not happen again.
