Hey, sometimes you get Batman, sometimes you get... I dunno, Moon Knight or something.

why would anyone like 4:3? that's so foreign to me..widescreen is the future yet you guys want to stick with a square aspect ratio.
also these products may not have been announced yet but we all know the Samsung is going to have better specs..
I hope the magazine publishers are working on a new strategy for their apps because when the retina iPad comes, they're all going to look like shit. What are they gonna do...double the resolution (and thus the file size) of these issues that already are huge to download?
Has anyone ever used those case/keyboard combo covers for their iPad? My laptop is on its last legs and I've been debating wether or not to buy a netbook or a Keyboard case or even just an apple Bluetooth keyboard and I'm running in circles. Basically I'd like to do some heavy writing when I'm not at home, mainly on the train or visiting relatives. The plus points for me about netbooks are the price and the fact that it's nice and stable flipped open on my lap, but it seems a bit extravagant when I already have an ipad2. The problem with the keyboard cases for me though are that they're quite expensive if they end up not working with an ipad3 and I'm not sure of their stability if I was typing on a train on my lap for example.
Anyone have any experience? I did see a Kingston universal keyboard case which might eliminate the upgrade worries, but for £90, I'm not sure if just plunking an extra £60 on a netbook would be more beneficial. I've never used a netbook which compounds the problem, since I'm not sure what to expect.

^ I want one for taking lecture notes, however I wish it came in white.
Looks like it comes in tons of colors, only white for the keyboard part though for some reason:
http://www.zagg.com/accessories/zaggfolio-ipad-2-keyboard-case#carbonFiber-white
i can't recommend this enough (Zagg Folio). Unless you have some really heavy computing you need to do one of these cases for an iPad turns it into a pretty nice functional laptop:
If you are going to get an iPad 3 I'd hold off though until they reveal it to see if the form factor changes. Case makers tend to be pretty quick on getting revisions out there.
full size keyboard or netbook type? Can't type properly on those.
BGR reports that it has received from a source photos of what are claimed to be screenshots from Apple's iBoot development and debugging software for the bootrom showing details on an iPad 3. The screenshots, which show references to the known "J1" and "iPad3,1" code names, reveal that the device will indeed be using a new application processor carrying an S5L8945X identifier, presumably as part of a new A6 system-on-a-chip.
The report notes that the processor is expected to be of the quad-core variety, up from the current dual-core processor used in the A5 on the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. The report also reiterates claims that the iPad will support LTE alongside GSM and CDMA 3G networks in a single device.
Netbook style, I don't think there are any cases that connect a keyboard and a ipad into one with the full size style bluetooth keyboards.
Oh and more proof that iPad 3 is going quad-core:
http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/01...-details-of-ipad-3-with-quad-core-a6-and-lte/
Probably the same GPU (it's not like games have even tapped the limit of the A5).It would be a quad-core A9 with a SGX543MP4, right? So basically the same chip the Vita has.
Sony is doomed.
They're already using the same GPU. The A5 is using the dual version of the SGX 543 (the MP2), Sony the quad version (MP4).Probably the same GPU (it's not like games have even tapped the limit of the A5).
Right, and I don't think they'll go to the MP4 if they don't have to.They're already using the same GPU. The A5 is using the dual version of the SGX 543 (the MP2), Sony the quad version (MP4).
There are far too many games that don't have any kind of optimisation for iPad 2. I'm sure they could get Peggle to run at 60fps for instance. But no, it plays the same as it does for iPad 1. There are countless examples of this.
And many apps are built for the lowest powered iOS device of any relevance (something like the 3rd generation iPod Touch). Real Racing 2 for instance, the game that everyone raves about with its fancy 1080p output for iPad 2. But it has NO PHYSICS because the underlying engine is built for a slow iPod.
I fear this will just continue for far too long, way into the iPad 3 generation, where the only optimisations will be to get the same shite iPod games running at higher res, when really they should be saying 'to hell with the res', and actually get some decent physics and effects on the go.

Any other week it would be, but the closest one to me is in Indianapolis, and it's Super Bowl week.Take it to an Apple Store. Easy swap.

I hate how I'm not taken seriously because I'm a junior. =\

yeah, I think you're right. the majority of games and apps will still target the lower end hardware. It's the smart thing for most devs.
When new hardware ships, we can expect some speed gains with the embedded apps. so Safari will render stuff faster, the music app will lag a bit less, etc...
The third party apps that really take advantage of the hardware will be few and far between (but at least we can expect Apple to highlight the shit out of them in the store). And there'll probably be one or two bleeding edge graphics engine demos (like epic Citadel, at the time) or physics simulators to use as demos around the time the hardware ships.
And just to rub it in iPad 3 is launching most likely within the launch window of Vista basically overwhelming any attention it might have got from the media and the tech types.I look forward to the eventual PS Vita ports to the iPad 3 and iPhone 5. Sony can't catch a break.

Because the iPad has no natural orientation.

It's a damn shame, iPad 3 hype is going to completely drown out the Vita. I know they're in different markets, but people only have so much money/time for gadgets and iPad will really suck the attention away from the Vita.
This will change over time as the baseline goes up. Right now the baseline is iPhone 3GS, I bet iOS6 will support iPhone 4+ hardware only. So if new games/apps want to take advantage of the new iOS features they will have to leave older hardware behind.
You're right and I don't think they really have to use the MP4. The Power consumption could be too high, combined with the new screen. It's already supposed to be a bit thicker and/or have less than 10 hour battery life. Still, I want them to use the MP4! :-(Right, and I don't think they'll go to the MP4 if they don't have to.
yeah, absolutely.
it's one of the things I find exciting about supporting and following these young platforms. you need to have the stomach to pay up more frequently if you want to stay up to date but it's neat to see yearly speed increases that are measured at 200% and not 20%.
You have to blame Sony on that one. Apple has a set release schedule that they usually don't mess with, they had to know Apple would be putting out their next-gen iPad around the exact same time they set the Vita release date. It's baffling they would do that. Yes one is a game system and one is a tablet but people have limited budgets for gadgets like these, and iPad clearly has quite a bit more interest to put it lightly.
Yeah, I am curious to see how the yearly updates to iPad will look in 5+ years. Will it still be this yearly excitement and mass upgrade in specs or will it start to look more like how Apple does their yearly upgrades to their laptop line where it's mostly silent revisions with spec boosts and little fanfare.
Been meaning to get an Ipad for a while now. Does anyone know when the next one will be announced or at least a rough ball park? Don't want to get an Ipad 2 and have it be obsolete in a few weeks

Whenever the announcement is, I'm expecting at least a three week gap, maybe four, between the announcement and launch. They're going to want to give devs some time to get retina updates going.
The rumour is that it will be announced sometime this month for an early March release. Whatever the case may be, the launch of the iPad 3 is imminent. Worth waiting considering the upgrades (A6, double screen resolution, LTE, better cameras). The only thing I worry about is the battery life...if they can retain the 10 hours then I will be very impressed.
The annoucement will probably be sometime this month.

It won't matter much in the long run. PSV is going to struggle (mightly) with or without launching near the next iPad.
They didn't give devs a huge gap between when they annouced iPhone 4 with retina and the release.
I disagree I think there's still a pretty good market for it and I would argue that the ipad is in a different market than the Vita anyway especially considering price, I don't think the Vita will have as big of problems, it's more competing with the Ipod Touch than the Ipad and I think it's pretty even.Good point. Sony overshot the market, $250 dedicated handhelds is going to be hard sell. This isn't like when the PSP launched, the market is really different now. These general purpose devices (iPhone, iPad, Android) has really changed the gadget landscape.

I plan to check out the ipad 3 is because I will eventually get a tablet but just not sure what I want.
Doesn't the Apple USB power brick fit that description? One side is a two prong plug, other side is a USB port. I think both iPads came with them. There might be a two port knockoff out there but I can't say I've looked so I'm not sure.this seems as good a place as any to ask:
Are there any USB chargers which have sockets in line with the mains socket? I'm currently using either a kensington 4-port charger, or my Kindle charger - both have the USB ports pointing downwards. that makes plugging/unplugging from a wall socket near the floor difficult - i'd like something that basically sits in the socket and gives me 1 or more outward facing USB ports.
Well that's only "proof" if it's actually real, but seems reasonable enough.Oh and more proof that iPad 3 is going quad-core:
http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/01...-details-of-ipad-3-with-quad-core-a6-and-lte/
If it has a quad res display they'll probably need to use the MP4 just for the fillrate to maintain game performance. If possible I'm guessing they'll just gate off extra cores when not needed.Right, and I don't think they'll go to the MP4 if they don't have to.
iOS updates will become a bigger deal. Well moreso than now...but now is just as much for the iPhone updates considering when it's announced. Or it'll be like the iPod where some other new device starts getting the spotlight.Yeah, I am curious to see how the yearly updates to iPad will look in 5+ years. Will it still be this yearly excitement and mass upgrade in specs or will it start to look more like how Apple does their yearly upgrades to their laptop line where it's mostly silent revisions with spec boosts and little fanfare.
They're predictable...except for when they're unpredictable!Yeah, it's not like it's a surprise that iPad 3 is about to launch. Apple's pretty predictable when it comes to their update cycles (well except for iPhone 4S which launched later than expected). Really stupid on Sony's part.
Issue is people don't have infinite money to spend. Most people won't be able to afford a iPad 3 and a Vita at launch since they are launching the same time. It isn't a stretch to say the people who were interested in both will more than likely go with the iPad 3.
I bet you devs are already working on retina upgrades for their apps. Apple has been trying to reduce the time from announcement to launch with their products, I doubt that will change with iPad 3. I predict that there will be 1 week, maybe 2 from announcement to launch.
