well, I know your connection is garbage (sorry) but my 3G is decent and - in time - LTE will make HD streaming a breeze in lots of metro areas.

Plus, it's not hard to be smart about this from Apples POV. they can have bitrate limited SD versions stream automatically on 3G for iPhones then have HD versions ready for wifi or LTE.

The idea of plugging in an iphone or little apple TV box in a friend's house or hotel on a visit and having your entire movie collection available is very neat. Or just logging in your account on their device and getting the content.

... I concede that netflix might end up getting there first but their selection has been so iffy in Canada that I would prefer to buy the movies and shows I like than depend on netflix to get them.

Yeah, this would be very different than Netflix. You'd actually own the movie and stream it whenever you want for the foreseeable future. Netflix you at the mercy of whatever is availble for streaming that given day, and most things have a limited time span before being removed.

I really hope Apple does this and soon.

How have people been with getting theres replaced with a blotchy and leaky screen?

Anyone with dodgy screens, have they had them replaced or are Apple not considering screen blotches and light leaks on a $800 device worthy of replacement?

I took mine back three times to an Apple Store due to image retention and backlight bleed. The final time I had enough and just asked for a refund. They were ALL terrible. I then went out a week later and bought another at random from a different shop, and it's pretty much perfect.

Luck of the draw, or maybe they were just trying to screw me over each time with crap replacements.

That sounds good, it definitely is the next step for iTunes. BTW, I was referring to HD streaming speeds as a replacement for Blu-Ray, not sure how much one would outweigh the other, for me.

I really just hope iTunes gets better, it's kinda shit at this point, and if they are looking to evolve and add new layers onto it, the foundation needs to be... well, not shit.

I might be wrong but I get the feeling that the reason there was no full number revision of itunes last year is because they are reworking it greatly for 2012.

itunes match and iOS 5 has reduced the importance of itunes and I would not be surprised to see iOS 6 or 7 gain metadata editing of music files (like editing contact info now) and podcast syncing further making itunes unnecessary.

of course, that leads to a crossroads. if itunes is less relevant, is it worth the effort to reinvent it? I would hope that they would but they may just let it stagnate for several more years since they expect people to do more itunes-type tasks in iOS.

hmm. I'm not sure what way things will go.

Hey guys. So I figured out how to link my google calendar to my iPad calendar app. By default it only displays events from your main google calendar account. So if you've created multiple google calendars, they won't show on the iPad itself. You can however go to https://www.google.com/calendar/iphoneselect to add/sync them. This took me a while to figure out, so I'm just sharing the knowledge with others.

Google Calendar allows you to subscribe to events like US holidays, or a sports teams schedule. Those however can not by synced with the iPad for whatever reason. :/

Anyone know if there is a good website for importing things like holiday schedules, movie/game releases, etc to my calendar easily?

Mine has had the light leak along the bottom edge since I got it. But I only notice it when the screen is black and only once in a while so I don't care enough to complain.

I really hope so, it's just a pivotal experience and gateway that you have to basically get through (for most people, anyway) when experiencing iDevices that it's just sad to see how it isn't their top tier stuff.

Podcasts are a mess on iOS unless you get a third party app (and there are a lot of good third party apps out there) but you shouldn't have to resort to a third party.

hello gaf

today i noticed this weird-ass scuff on the back of my ipad

it's very close to circular and it looks like the coating (?) has come off, revealing very shiny metal underneath?

photo4pbkm.jpg

any clues? anything i can do about it? i'm kind of worried that if some kind of protective oxidation layer has scuffed then it might get bigger.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think I got sports schedules through Yahoo (and holidays from..somewhere). They have some calendar links somewhere on whatever team pages, then I think you can add that to Google, and that'll show up as a delegate or something. I'm using CalDAV rather than Exchange, so I'm not sure if that'll make a difference. Worst case you can add the calendars separately to the iPad outside of Google.

Apple's calendars page is still around apparently: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/calendars/
Otherwise if you look up iCal (or CalDAV) calendars there should be a bunch of sources out there.

According to people familiar with the product, though the new iPad will be touting that double resolution display — a true iPad Retina Display, clocking in at 2048 x 1536 — the device will be nearly physically identical to its predecessor, but the slate will be about one millimeter thicker overall. We're also told that the A6 CPU the iPad 3 is likely to sport will include a significantly more powerful GPU — no big surprise there. What is surprising, however, is that our sources say that the A6 will not be a quad-core chip, but will remain dual-core. We've previously reported that the device will have an LTE cell radio on-board, but we have yet to confirm that.

Not a quad-core A9? Meh. Looks like they really need to save some features for every year.

Guess I'm gonna get one of those sweet, sweet Android tablets instead. Quad-Core CPU, Tegra 3 GPU, 2 GB RAM, one of those higher res displays, yeah. It will be sweet.

What I really want to say: I don't give a shit. Just take my money and send me that goddam iPad.

Oh, and February is seriously worthless when it comes to the tech industry. Nothing interesting happens on February. Can't we just skip this month?

A quad core A9 isn't going to make any appreciable difference anyway and that Tegra 3 GPU is less than half as fast as the SGX543MP2 in the current ipad 2. The SOC will be fine, Apple haven't once dropped the ball in that regard.

There isn't a reason for them to get a quad core in there now when they can still get great performance with a dual-core A6. Nobody in the android tablet market is really challenging them in terms of power at the moment, but they need to watch out for Samsung because they seem poised to put out a pretty powerful tablet this year. I'm sure they'll have something up their sleeve considering how quickly they reacted to the iPad 2 announcement last year.

Seeing as they were willing to release the iPad 1 with only 256mb of ram, I'm not expecting that to be bumped up past 512mb either. Hooray for hardware obsolescence? Not entirely convinced they'll be putting LTE in here either unless they're getting good battery life with the chips that are available to them right now.

What higher GPUs are available for this to use now?

They can bump it up to an MP4, use a higher clock rate, or use the SGX554. I still don't think it's really necessary.

You know, an iPad 3 with 512 MB RAM would seriously blow and we won't know until the guys from iFixit get it.

Unless the higher res assets use an incredible amount more ram on new apps, it's going to be 512MB. I don't see a reason for them to put 1GB in there yet, and as you said earlier it's a great selling point for the next iPad.

fuck it. I want a gig.

Just for keeping more apps suspended in memory for multitasking or to keep more safari pages cached.

I admit that I don’t expect it, seeing how they have no serious competition in the space, but it’d be nice if they did bump up all the tech across the board.

Yeah, the OG ShitPad experience really burned me and I don't want to be in the same situation a year from now. I'd gladly sacrifice an hour battery life for a gig of RAM.

I'm going to wait until they send out invites, the average person on ebay seems to not pay attention to these things so the value doesn't go down much.

The average person doesn't know that the iPad 3 is coming, but the tech geeks that will flood the market with used iPad 2's do...and they will drive the used price down.

Since when is RAM a great selling point for iPads? Well I know it is for some people, but really, what percentage of the market is that?

As for the cores it depends on a lot of things. If the clock speed is high enough I'd take that over more slower cores, or if they manage to pull the A15 out of nowhere I'd definitely rather have that...even if it meant launching later than expected.

(also his iPad sources were wrong last year so who knows)
real men buy a ipad 3 and keep the ipad 2 as backup
Rich man multitasking.

Rich man multitasking.
Selling point as in "hey the iPad 2 runs so much better and crashes less than my iPad 1 with iOS 5, I should sell mine and buy one." It happened to a ton of my friends, putting less RAM in a tablet than an iPhone 4 was inexcusable in my opinion.

Why do people think RAM will be a selling point? We won't know the RAM till after it comes out. Apple refuses to release spec info like that.

Windows phone is the first time since an old Symbian phone that podcasts work properly. Subscription with automatic download of new episodes - lovely (although the music player doesn't seem to remember where you left off which is irritating, at least the seeking is pretty fast)

About dual vs quad: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-57373707-64/a-quad-core-ipad-3-not-so-fast/

I feel the same as Anand basically:
Anand Shimpi, Anandtech: "If people are thinking quad-core in the [Nvidia] Tegra 3 sense, it seems very unlikely."
"Having four [Cortex] A9s (analogous to Nvidia's Tegra 3), that's just not the right move."
Shimpi continued. "My core reason for quad-core not being the right next move is that I think single-threaded performance still has a lot of room to improve. And improving that doesn't mean going with more of the same cores."
"Another option would be to have a dual-core A15 based part. That would be the most interesting from an architecture standpoint. But it's a riskier route. But if I were in Apple's shoes that's the way to guarantee that you don't have to worry about updating iPad silicon for another 12 months."
He continued. "Another option is that you have two A15s and two A7s. That's one way for them to be a quad-core but not really be a quad-core [because] you wouldn't run four cores at the same time."

There isn't a reason for them to get a quad core in there now when they can still get great performance with a dual-core A6. I thinik they'll pretty much have to beef up the RAM, I think they learned their lesson with the first iPad.

Pretty much, yup.

I think apple was being cautious with the first one and wasn't sure if it would become a success and what people would do with it.

But now that we're seeing all these new video, photo and audio editing apps, a RAM bump will help ensure that the end user experience remains trouble free.

Fwiw, I think 512 on the iPad 2 has been enough for all the apps I've used. But with Apple seeing how the iPad can displace notebooks for so many people, there's more reason to push the memory up to make it more capable and give developers some space to be more ambitious in scope.

http://9to5mac.com/2012/02/09/high-res-sharp-panel-spotted-is-it-for-ipad-3/

iPad 3 parts are supposedly cropping up all over China. Following up on yesterday’s spyshots of a purported iPad 3 enclosure (here and here), Japanese blog Macotakara today published the above photo allegedly depicting a high-resolution panel manufactured by Sharp. According to the blog, the part was obtained by parts reseller Eye Lab Factory, meaning you should take this with a few pinches of salt. It looks as a 9.7-inch panel and Macotakara observes its flat cable seemingly corresponds to a similar cable connecting the iPad 2′s LCD panel to the motherboard.

The display is said to be of a XQGA variety, meaning a 2,048-by-1,536 pixel resolution.
Macotakara claimed last month that Foxconn and Pegatron Technology began assembly of next-generation iPads for an early-March launch (and iLounge concurs). Unnamed sources also told Macotakara that Sharp would supply 2048-by-1536 resolution panels for iPad 3, a notion in line with earlier reports by DigiTimes and the Wall Street Journal. Meanwhile, another source reveals new iPad 3 replacement parts, more on this right below.

Chinese parts reseller TVC-mall posted images said to depict iPad 3 replacement parts. Specifically, what you’re looking at below is an internal earphone audio jack and a Bluetooth antenna flex cable. Both are available on the reseller’s site and are claimed to be replacement parts for WiFi iPad 3. While the latter looks virtually identical to its iPad 2 counterpart, the former reveals some differences in how different audio jack components are composed relative to one another. As is always the case with such leaks, it’s entirely possible this particular parts reseller is exploiting the iPad 3 hype in order to get some attention.

Fucking rumors, how do they work?

Edit: Even more

Sources say the company has chosen the first week in March to debut the successor to the iPad 2 and will do so at one of its trademark special events. The event will be held in San Francisco, presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple’s preferred location for big announcements like these. No word yet on a street date for the iPad 3 (assuming that’s what it’s called), though my guess is retail availability will follow roughly the same schedule as that of the iPad 2: available for purchase a week or so after the event.

We need a iPad 3 rumor and event thread soon :)

Hmmm 3G or not 3G? I was thinking of getting the WiFi and tethering it to my phone, but is it more advantageous having it built into the device?

gimme those retinas!

I was browsing through the guardian unlimited photo app this morning. The photos look great but every time I would look at the text description in the corner, there was major fuzziness and aliasing with that small print.

I want that kind of text reproduction to be banished!

Exactly what I thought yesterday, we need an iPad 3 rumor thread up where we can speculate for a month.

I bought my iPad 2 in December fully knowing iPad 3 would come out in March/April, hopefully I won't regret it.

I think you get AGPS with 3G, for more accuracy in apps like Reminders and GPS, location aware apps.

if you need internet access fairly regularly when you're out and about, its worth getting 3G built in. It gets to be a pain to keep turning your tethering on and off (and if you're not using it you'd want to turn it off to save the battery)

if its only the odd occasion, then stick with tethering.
