Apple iPad 2 |OT|

Apple's saving money, and I'm not offended--the iPad at $499 is a cheap price, and I'll really only use the camera maybe 1-3 times a week; they put their money in things that you experience constantly, like the build materials and weight, battery life, the IPS display that you're always staring at, and hardware that keeps everything running fast and smooth.

But arguing that this is never needed and doesn't need improvement, and is not available with current tech puts you in a hole if 6 months from now the iPod Touch gets upgraded with better cameras (that then turn up in the iPad 3).

Protip: You can plug your iPhone 4 into your iPad using the USB dongle with the camera connection kit, transfer over your photos and HD movies to your hearts content.

Can't wait to get my iPad 2, I think people are making a big deal about the camera because the press event and information on Apple's website make it seem like a nice camera and then they see the results in person for themselves like I did while testing one at Best Buy. I don't care that the camera quality is poor, it isn't the reason I'm getting an iPad but I can certainly see myself using the camera less than I would of if it were higher quality. The pictures pretty much look like shit (As expected knowing what kind of sensors are in there). People were used to the iPhone 4 camera and thought it would be closer to that in quality I'm sure just as I was. (I do not own an iPhone 4).

There's no talking to these people.

Last year it was the lack of a camera, now the camera isn't good enough.
I didn't buy my iPad 2 for its cameras. Hell, I won't even use FaceTime or PhotoBooth. And I have an iPod touch for video. I like the quality of the video fine. And the only times I take pictures it's for FaceBook. I could care more about the camera in the iPod and iPad.

Next year they'll find something else to complain about and how they'll wait for iPad 4 now.

On the camera discussion, I'm sure they could be thrown the 3G or better yet, the 3GS camera in there. Both are infinitely better than what they did put in there.

So for the guy who was talking about the Asian Scalpers at the NYC store I'm kind of confused as to where the majority of them are being sold? Is ebay the most profitable? Who the fuck sleeps outside on a sidewalk to make a max profit of $150 at most? I must be rich.

32GB White 3G's are going for over $1000 on eBay.

I think Asian scalpers are going right overseas with them.

eBay only allows non-apple authorized retailers to sell < 5 iPad 2's a week. And they have to be "Top Sellers."

Regular eBay members can only sell 1 a week.

Yeah, I remember shooting tons of 720P video with my 3GS...oh, that's right, I couldn't do that because it recorded VGA video.

And you don't think apple did that on purpose? The 3GS camera is 3MP. Much higher than what's in IPad.

The photo part. Not the video part. There's a difference.

A: Those cameras are only 480p and not even widescreen. And B: the iPhone 3G is thicker than the iPhone 4. Until there's an iPhone 4 quality 720p camera that can fit in an iPad's thin case, it won't happen. Can we get over it already?

Hd video recording requires more than just a minimum sensor resolution. Remember it has to capture 30 frames per second. The soc itself in the 3Gs probably couldn't handle that smoothly without killing the battery.

The sensor itself is literally capable of only VGA video. Plus it has that awesome rolling shutter effect, as the CMOS sensor literally scans each frame from top to bottom.

Stop looking for crazy motives when the only actual reason is cost and size.

They give them to couriers who put them in suitcases and sell them in Hong Kong and China. I've also seen some Russian/Eastern European types. The iPad came out like 5-6 months after launch in Hong Kong and China, so they sell at a very high premium, and even when they were launched, they were still supply constrained. Heck, I knew someone who brought an iPad 1 to China two months after launch and he still got an extra $200 from it.

But it's true, the line standers don't actually make very much. They get maybe $100-200 per device, but it's still turns into a $50-$100/hour job.

So I ended up getting an og iPad 16gb with 3G and I have to say that I am not at all disappointed with my decision. I picked up Air Video on someone rec and have been enjoying streaming video from my computer all over the house. I was using the NCAA bball app to watch one game on my iPad while watching another on my tv. Used the NBA game time app to follow the stats while watching the thunder and heat and have spent the last 45 minutes building my Flipboard which might just be one of the coolest things ever.

There has also been excessive gaf browsing. The browsing experience is really fantastic.

I picked up a griffin élan passport for my case because the iPad is easily removed from it and I love to hold this thing. Typing on it is a breeze too. I was completely wrong to write the iPad off as an overgrown iPod touch when it first came out and can see tablets replacing my need for a personal laptop from here on out as long as I have a desktop and a work laptop of course!

I am definitely a happy iPad owner.

I can't believe people are still stuck on conspiracy theories about Apple purposely making their products shit.

Why in the world would Apple knowingly put a shitty camera in their device if they can affordably put in a better one? Seriously, are you guys reading what you're typing? The suggestion is that they would rather you not give them money for a year and wait for the next update. You know, instead of putting out the best yearly updates they can so that you're buying it every single year.

They put the best camera they could put in the device considering the size, cost, and availability of the parts. It's a shitty camera and we all wish we had a better one, but the conspiracy theories are ridiculous.

I don't think they make their products shit, but I do think they iterate on things with a clear strategy in mind.

As products reach maturity, you need to find new users and new uses to offer utility to customers. That's economics/business school 101. New colors, new design, etc. all come from this and holding off on certain things has definitely happened and will continue to happen.

I can't believe you just posted this. It's not a conspiracy theory either, it's just effective business. They've got something in their product that they can upgrade on the cheap next time, and make it seem "revolutionary". I'm still planning on getting an iPad 2 when it finally launches in Japan, but at the same time I still recognize smart business decisions when I see them. A retina display would have been nice as well, but it's not like any competitor has anything even remotely close out in tablets.

I played with both this and the xoom at best buy today. Got to love that design engineering. Holding the ipad 2 felt great but i quickly fell in love with the customization options on the honeycomb. I didnt know i would love widgets and live backgrounds as much as i did and preordered that instead.

Has there been even a whisper of expanding iOS's customization in 5.0 this summer or no? I would love that beyond words for my iphone at the least. Jailbreaking has caused some serious stability issues recently.

I did the same thing as you TylerD, except I got a 16GB Wifi Only for <$400. Going to be ordering a bigger battery for my phone so I can have it wirelessly tethering all day so I will basically have 4g on my iPad all the time.

And SecondApps makes browsing GAF fantastic on the iPad. I am also a happy iPad owner and while I know I'll be upgrading to an iPad 3 come 2012, I am enjoying what I have right now.

No one knows anything at all about 5.0. You could make wild guesses like Dashboard or Mission Control* or whatever, but they'd still be wild guesses. They could pull something completely new out of nowhere, or not much at all, who knows! We'll find out in April or whenever they hold the announcement.

*For whatever reason this was called "thebridge" when the OS X Lion page originally went up a few months back. Could be a thelogical bridge of some sort linking Mac and iOS, or someone named Theb Ridge naming something after himself. Or nothing at all!

I bet 5.0s only big change will be the notification system, while everything else will just be slight UI changes here and there to make things better in certain places. Nothing will change drastically outside of notifications.

That's my guess.

If that's the one thing that changes, I would be happy. For those that are expecting or hoping that apple will add customization options, given apples lack of customization options on OSX, I wouldn't count on it.

Dang, never thought of getting another battery. Will do that too!

Red and black iPad and black and white iPad are the best combo for smart covers, IMO.

Definitely picking up a black iPad, though. White is just too out there for me.

For me, I'd be happy with just a Facetime HD camera on the front. The HP Touchpad doesn't have a rear camera and I'm cool with that. It's a tablet. My notebook doesn't have a rear camera and I don't see the need for one when I have my phone.

How is FaceTime on it as it is for you?

The only 5.0 change I want is the ability to make my own text message chimes. I don't understand why this isn't an option yet. We can buy or make our own ring tones, and set it so each person in our phone book has their own personalized ring, but we can't make our own text chime. Changing the notification system would be nice, and seems expected, but the only other thing I can really think of adding is custom text chimes.

FaceTime HD? It's great on the new mbp. Biggest difference is that it's widescreen so it fills the display instead if having a slim portrait view as it is on the iPhone.

Even on the older Macs you can send a landscape oriented image on Facetime though. And that actually captures a wider view than on portrait, so it's not just an upscaled landscape crop of the portrait picture.

It ends up boiling down to the resolution.

Havent used FaceTime on older macs but that's good to know. It's not 640x480?

Anyone tried scanning their own comics? Since the marvel app, DC app and comixology app I've been buying and reading comics on my ipad however these apps and other comic apps do not have some of the comics in my own collection i would like to re-read such as Ash by Joe Quesada. Thinking about adding some of my own comic collection to the comics i have on my ipad.

According to wiki, the more recent ones (but before the new Facetime HD cam) are actually 1280*1024 but capped to 640*480.

However, it really looks that the sensor is/was already horizontally oriented.

Ah wait, I see what you mean - 4:3 (on the old ones) against a wider aspect ratio on the newer FaceTime cams, so the new ones fill the screens better. True. But FaceTime auto-corrects the aspect ratios so that the sent picture matches the screen of the device that it's receiving it, so it already fills out the whole thing with no black borders (with a lot of cropping and scaling of course) even on these older ones :P

how is the browser? speed to load pages, and more importantly switching tabs without refreshing the page?

camera is frustrating, but at least its there to enable barcode scanning/AR type stuff. Its not really for photography, device is too bulky.

Oh, and any photo taken with normal cameras indoors using artificial light will look noisy and shit. there just isnt' enough light to take a decent photo at a decent shutter speed, so the ISO ramps up which makes it noisy. Its even a challenge for DSLRs unless you use a tripod and/or flash

Has there been any announcements for the international launch that I've missed?

A week from launch and I've not heard anything about what's happening.

with the exception of Japan's launch being delayed, there have been no other comments from Apple.

WOW. didnt think demand would last until now.

it's only been a week. supply constrained launches can last for a while. see: The iPad and The Wii.

oh, and I hate to say it but that picture of the iPad on the tweed jacket, jaunty pocket square and the black rimmed glasses? that's some good old-fashioned hipster shit, man :)

For anyone else that ordered online- My order was entered at 4 A.M EST last Friday morning. I got the "prepared for shipment" Monday, "Shipped" on Tuesday. It will be in my hands in New Jersey later today. (just to give people a time frame).

yeah for EU time I've just signed up for the 'mail me when available' then I'm going to bang out an order real fast to hopefully get nearest the front of a real long line.

My iPad finally shipped last night from Shenzen. Unfortunately looks like it won't be delivered until Wednesday. So much for fast free shipping being fast (and they wouldn't allow changes to the shipping on the iPad for some reason).
