Is Zinio the best reader for digital magazines? Seems to have a good selection.

it has the largest selection but I really dislike the reading experience. they're just scans of the print versions and the text is super small (since it's typically printed larger than on a 10" screen) and requires lots of zooming and panning. plus some of the images have so-so jpeg compression and don't look good zoomed in.

the experience really reeks of "least amount of effort possible" to get the mags on the device. but, well, if the magazine is only available from zinio, then there's not much choice, y'know?

I feel stupid even talking about that troll article but... there's no 200 dollar laptop with a battery that can get close to 10 hours usage. so the guy would NEED to carry and switch out a battery (possibly 2 of them) to match the integrated battery in the ipad.

so there's added inconvenience and weight for the same performance. hardly a good design.

You get TEN hours of battery life. "Doubling" up your battery life on a laptop even will net you about 9 hours. And thats on a good laptop thats not doing anything intensive.

I'm not talking about how long you would get with a laptop compared to an iPad. I'm just agreeing with him that a changeable battery, on top of the 10 hour life, would be a great feature on the iPad.

Nothing wrong with more features.

Of course it's something that won't happen, but it would still be great. Just imagine, 20 hours!

Down for me as well. Wasn't working on the Apple TV either. Server problems maybe?

EDIT: according to the Twitters, it's definitely down everywhere.

I use one of those USB external battery charger things which is kind of better than a spare battery because I can alo use it provide juice to the DS, iPhone etc...

sigh... but making a battery replaceable means having to make the case thicker or the built in battery smaller.

so then you lose either the great form factor or the long default battery life.

design is compromise.

edit: netflix is up in Canada. superior nation confirmed.

I'll try, but i think the online apple store is guaranteed to be down by 01:00.01

Anyway, some good news - price drop for the UK!

Wi-Fi
£399.00 inc VAT for the 16GB model
£479.00 inc VAT for the 32GB model
£559.00 inc VAT for the 64GB model.

Wi-Fi + 3G
£499.00 inc VAT for the 16GB model
£579.00 inc VAT for the 32GB model
£659.00 inc VAT for the 64GB model

Yeah just heard about this. Exchange rate has become favourable according to some papers.
About getting an ipad 2 for about seventy quid more than and ipad 1 might push me over I think.

I know it won't happen, Apple will never put a replaceable battery in a mobile device.

Just saying it would be nice.

Sigh.

Yeah, Apple's proven this point multiple times by now. You get better battery life and better case design.

again, doing this would make the device thicker, heavier and possibly make the default battery life worse.

so how is that nice? it's not. it's worse.

Blah, lame. I've done away with almost every other physical media. Periodicals need to catch up.

Thanks for the opinion.

It's more a matter of convenience than function. However, as long as Apple employs a decent replacement program (which they do have with the iPad at least), I don't see the inconvenience, especially considering its generous battery life.

I'm downloading all of these apps for an iPad 2 I don't own yet. Hurry up Friday!

Christ on a cracker ok ok.

I'm talking theoretically, as in making a swappable battery that doesn't impact size, form or battery life.

ffs I was just saying it would be nice.

I'm a mechanical engineer. I don't play that game.

Sorry. But it's not personal or anything. :)

While we're at it, the iPad should also make toast, without impacting size, form or battery life.

I would like this, as I enjoy toast very much.

There should be an app for this.

That's good to know. I much prefer tabbed browsing with Atomic to Safari. Is iCab the preferred third party browser these days? Or is it a personal thing?
Just personal preference.

Same here. They're also a lot more compact than a spare iPad battery would be.

They did until 2008-2009. Hell my old PowerBook from 2000 could hold a second battery in place of the optical drive for double the battery life without swapping!

Meaning I went from 2-2.5 hours to 4-5 hours

...but with that theoretical battery (basically more capacity for the size/weight), you'd get even more battery life if you went with a non removable one! Do you want a 10 hour replaceable battery or a 15-20 hour non removable one?

You can't say if it's better or worse because the actual results are unknown. The size effects may be negligible. The battery could be much worse. The money you save on not having to have Apple replace the battery could wind up being stolen and used to fund the human trafficking market.

Netflix streaming seems to be up for console (i'm on 360)

So is it not working for mobile apps?
It's supposedly not working anywhere, 360 included, so it's weird you can get in. The entire netflix.com site is down.

Weird lol

I'm streaming farscape right now.

I wonder if the episode I'm watching is fully cached

what's the best settings to read books on ipad? Kindle seems the best app but text anti aliasing is lacking and nonstandard fonts in some older books. iBooks seems to have sharpest text but shittiest options. Advice gaf?
I use Stanza and like it (particularly how it interacts with Calibre's server mode). Apparently GoodReader is good but it's not free and Stanza (and Bookman) meet my assorted needs.

What options do you need apart from a selection of fonts, and the size of the text?

It's a book!
Depressing.

Actually we do have results in the unibody MacBook Pros. Battery life went way up, and the cases became thinner without sacrificing structural integrity. It's been a comple win.

Does anyone know the availability at any of the 3 Apple locations in NYC? Am I better off just ordering it from their site? Or do I take a chance this weekend....

If you can get them at home maybe a Slingbox. Not sure if any stations/leagues have viewer apps for their stuff.
Nah don't want to pay for another box and dealing with the uploading. I think ESPN 3 and FSN show some games online, do any of those work on an iPad? Maybe Sky has something for UK subscribers?

You're better off driving up to Canada this weekend and buying it there... although I imagine with the international launch moving ahead that the scalpers will scale back their operations.

It's hilarious in every negative Apple story, they end with "Apple did not return our phone calls" or "Apple were unavailable to comment at the time this story went to press."

They must be bitter that Apple refuse to talk about this shit. I'm sure journo's must leave messages saying "Hey we are printing this article about all these new iPad 2 defects and how they are broken and shit, you should get back to us."

And they just never call back. Must be infuriating.

GAF, I'm sorry I just have to gush for a minute.
- I missed having an iPad for 1.5 weeks WAY more than I thought I would. I'm SO happy to have it back.
- It's SO THIN.
- the smart cover is absolutely perfect
- Yes, a little screen bleeding, but I honestly don't care. Maybe I'll bring it by the Apple store to get an exchange if it doesn't clear up in a week or two.

Also, I am very happy that I didn't break and order from the online store. I gotta tell you, the subway ride to lower manhattan hoping it would be there by the time I got there was exhilarating.

Anyway, good times. Woo!

The iPad has now replaced my smartphone and iPod Touch as my go-to sitting-on-the-toilet device!
Yes I'm sitting on the toilet now.

For those looking for wallpapers. There's a free HD wallpaper app with several different categories and email/save support

Here's a pic I have as my wallpaper now

I even use my iPad when I'm standing up just to hang a slash! I'll either hold it with one hand if I'm reading or prop it up on top of the cistern if I'm watching something.

it's glorious isn't it? next thing apple is going to be blamed for: increase in hemorrhoids.

The iPad should be required for anyone who works at home on the computer. I think it has saved my sanity. I was really over working from home until I got this device. It has provided me with the separation I need when I take a break or end the day from my desktop. I used to just swap tabs and bam, I'd be off work. Now I get up, go in my living room, and sit on the couch with the iPad. I feel so much better at the end of the day, and I finally feel that separation I need between work and leisure.

Against my common sense and with only 4.5 hrs of sleep, i woke up this morning at 650 and got to the apple store at 710 only to see a line of about 25 people already there, i was fearing the worst but just decided to stay there because why not?
At about 8:30am the store manager came out to say that they had all models available but in limited quantities but they'd let us know as they sold out of them. To make a long story short, fast forward an hour, and i was walking out of the store with a white 32gb wifi iPad. SO AWESOME.

Didnt get to play with it at all until i left work in the afternoon, so i decided to go back to the Apple store and have it setup there because my brain was way too tired to think, it was there as i was setting it up that i saw it: A Dead Pixel. I called one of the guys over and pointed that out to him, he just said "lemme get this checked for you" and he ran off with my ipad to the genius bar where some other guy just inspected it with a magnifying glass (i think), a minute later the guy helping me came back and said "yup, thats a dead pixel so we're gonna see if we have some in the back and if so give you a new one." I was a little shocked that I didnt even have to open my mouth to ask for an exchange or anything, it was all offered and they were super gracious about it, 5 minutes later he came back with a brand new ipad for me.
I think that was the best customer service experience I've ever had, no wonder people are so loyal to the brand.

Also got a smart cover, which is pretty sweet but i dont want to scratch the crap out of the bottom of it, or the sides for that matter, what are the current favorite cases/covers among you guys?

I don't have one but there's various skin things for $10-30. There's clear ones, printed ones with designs, or custom ones you can do yourself. If I get anything it'd likely be one of those just cause I'm really liking the thinness/shape/weight and don't want to lose that with some case or shell.

My iPad is supposed to get here today, but I have been using my friend's iPad a little and notice that I wish it supported multi-touch gestures like the Return to Home one without guying the dev kit.

I forget which side the home button is on and it seems so out of the way. Lol.

if Apple.com said 1st of April. Is there ANY chance that it might arrive earlier? ... I'm running out of patience :(

Plus, the 1st of April date is a bit worrying :P

Oh god. I thought I was in a very small line at the apple store in aventura. Security comes and takes us somewhere in the back. Turns out there were around 100 people standing and sitting in line already. Wtf...

Update: Waited in line for 2hours just to be told they ran out of wifi iPad 2s....yay morning wasted.
