Apple iPad 2 |OT|

Last night I set up a GB appointment for today to have my backlight bleeding looked at. They replaced my unit with a new one without issue. My new iPad has far less bleeding. Props to Apple for handling my return so graciously.

Just Got this today. I wanted a pocket for my stylus and some other stuff. Its for iPad one, but it fits my ipad2 with smart cover perfectly. Hardly any wiggle room. It was $10

Case recc: Timbuk2 Envelope

I really have GAF to thank, as I had never heard of this company before. I had need for a new messenger bag and got a sweet one, then saw this great case. I had the old incase slip sleeve, but it wouldn't work with the new pad. This thing is a dream, built solid, no zippers to deal with, looks great.

Just a warning to Canadian GAFfers going to wait in line, the word on release time seems all over the place. The apple PR said 5pm but it sounds like retail (FS/BB) might do it at opening. No idea what the Apple stores are actually planning at this point.

Wait, what?

Well it's total bunch of guesswork right now. :/ BB/FS still think they might get units, and if they do I doubt they are going to stick to a later opening. I'm keeping an eye on HF but not sure we're going to know wtf is going on til tomorrow afternoon.

EDIT: I guess that first post made it sound like I knew wtf was going on. Sorry. Just saying that there are people prepping for early morning lines but it's all just guesswork on what happened last year. We don't know for sure yet whether it's 5PM or opening for sales, or if BB/FS are getting stock. At all.

I just tried out flipboard app for iPad and wow I really like it. It's hipster as fuck but Facebook is less cluttered and my twitter feed just became more awesome because the links are all prefetched with a preview in each pane. And I love flipping through pictures. This is one of the reasons I love the iPad.

Well, Air Video just got replaced as my favorite app. StreamToMe is fucking incredible! It may as well be called "Air Everything"...what a boss app.

There is nothing hipster about it. Jeez. What does that even mean?

Any recommendations on how to keep the back protected? Getting a white 32gb with a red leather smart cover for my birthday next month and need something to protect the back.

icab just got updated with the feature of the forever: toggle on-screen buttons on/off in full screen browsing mode. now if it only got the webkit update, it'd be perfect. now i can browse with the neogaf web app without hitting the damn transparent back button. yeaaa!

Oh I thought their use of a scrapbook as a physical metaphor for the invisible electronic social network as being hipster as fuck. Making something old seem new. I think they way they format sources and the way they automatically arrange the panels in to the book is their special sauce.

Honestly that app is amazing. It's so damn easy to use and setup.

Can you add an external HDD folder too? I haven't tried, since mine is off most of the time unless I am doing a backup or grabbing a video from it.

Yeah! I have my 1tb external HDD hooked up to my PC and added that as a stream, and EVERYTHING appeared and was stream-able...it was quite fantastic.

Would you mind explaining how to set this up? Or point me in a direction of a tutorial? I have no idea how to get my external hdd to show up with this app.

Oh wait a second, I mis-read you're post since I didn't know StreamToMe was an actual app, I thought you were just talking about Air Video.

I am using Air Video now and it works perfectly, what makes StreamToMe better?

StreamToMe does pretty much all music files (even Flac) plus photos, also, it does iTunes streaming as well (Home Sharing, I know, but this is an all in one right here). Not just videos. But it also does pretty much every video type as well. Also, I watch videos with subs, and while Air Video didn't display the styled subs (just re-encoded them in a generic font/text)...StreamToMe Supports stylized subs as well.

The best way I can put it is that it's like a proper VLC/MPC media player for streaming to your iPad.

zychi: A tutorial? It's simple for me, I'm doing it on Wi-Fi. It's very similar to how Air Video works. For more, these are step by step instructions: http://projectswithlove.com/streamtome/support_getting_started.html

I just attached my HDD, added a stream and selected the root of the HDD.

Lastly, I'm not sure if Air Video can do this, I haven't tried it on that since I probably won't need to use it anymore...but STM can also stream from your PC on 3g/non-local networks. I'm about to tether to my Evo and see if I can still stream by finding my computer's IP and having it accept external STM connections. See more about that here: http://projectswithlove.com/streamtome/support_remote_connections.html

Air Video can but I think StreamToMe might be better with managing bandwidth, like it'll auto adjust a stream vs you picking out a fixed bitrate.

Neither will work outside the LAN if you have some poorly configured network setup, but there's only a few apps that can get around that.

I need a decent xvid player that's not streaming-based so I can put stuff on my iPad directly. CineXplayer doesn't count. OPlayer stutters (or did last time I tested it)

Timbuk2 is huge in San Francisco where I'm from. Pretty much everyone has a bag and their only retail store is like 10 minute walk from my house so I went down there and they had all the colors except for red so I had to order it on the website. I got a red smart cover so I figured it would be cool to get the red lined timbuk2 bag.

I use avplayerhd. It was on sale.
It plays mkv 720p. Haven't tried xvid but it says it supports it

Wha...? StreamToMe displays all those cool anime subtitles that come in different fonts and colors and screen positions?! Thats the one gripe about Air Video, it makes my FLCL subs look like ass.

I believe they do. ssa and .srt external and hardsubbed files are supported. I only tried with a few Yu Yu Hakusho episodes but the subs were styled exactly how they appeared in VLC on my PC, unlike in Air Video. I can't be so certain about crazy style and positions (like what's in a lot of anime openings) but it's worth a shot.

seems like a great solution for overall protection WITH the smart cover. i plan to slip my ipad 2 in this before i go to bed or if i'm laying it down for an extended period of time (for back protection)

and it's reversible.
I bought 2 of these for my fiancee and myself and the package came in today. This thing fits the iPad 2 PERFECTLY (with the smart cover on). I definitely recommend it.

^^^
I also ordered one those for $5.50 with shipping, but doesn't have a pocket. For $5 bucks why not. But I like my belkin so far

Does StreamToMe allow downloading video to your device over the air to watch offline? That's the key thing Zunicast does that no other streaming app I've tried does.

What the fuck just happened to the internets?!
I'm discovering that websites are actually hosted on Wordpress and are using a new theme, OnSwipe, for iPads!? For example, I followed a link from GAF to this article: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=26671800#post26671800 and instead of getting the real site, it turns into this theme nonsense. The reason I followed the link was for the video which doesn't show up under the theme at all (might be a good thing as the video is a waste of time). Once I changed the user-agent in iCab the website appeared like normal and the video was watchable. It fucks up my iPhone browsing too because I use the iPad user-agent on that.

This is why we can't have nice things. :(

Yep. Don't know how I feel about this. There's something off about it, and missing videos need to be fixed, but the functionality is interesting.

Post comments here about the videos and see if they respond.

What the what? This needs to be optional.

So I'm part of the club now. Last night my wife surprised me with a white 32GB iPad 2 for my 40th birthday even though my birthday isn't until the beginning of May. She knew how bad I wanted one and couldn't hold out on me any longer.

Anyway, I'm loving this thing! I've got it tethered to my 3GS iPhone and it's working brilliantly. So far my only beef is that I can't find a comfortable way to use the keyboard in either horizontal or vertical mode. How do you guys type? With both thumbs or one handed? Is there a technique I should learn to make it easier on myself?

ugh. worst part of these early days of the ipad is seeing publishers turn quickly and easily accessible content into slow loading and cumbersome to access content.

they're losing sight of what made iphone web skins popular in the first place

Yeah the iPhone uses a different theme that was introduced two(?) years ago. I dislike using that theme on my iPhone which is why I usually request the 'full site' or switch to the iPad user agent. I can't see a way to request the 'full site' on is new iPad theme.

This new iPad theme also seems to track the browsing session across different sites. Watch the links at the bottom and see if it represents your actual history...

Here's the theme for mobile phones:

I use thumb typing in portrait mode. I'm used to this from my mobile phone and I'm faster of the bat. Holding the iPad this way is now tolerable with the new design of the iPad 2. Some folks will suggest that you should try touch typing on the landscape keyboard and you'll get used to it after "a few weeks". I believe this is a waste of time; the landscape keyboard takes up more screen estate and it wont be as good as typing on a proper full featured keyboard. There is a reason that Jobs et al liked to denigrate the keyboards on netbooks as small and cramped before the iPad came along. Which ever one you pick, make sure to keep the keyboard clicking sounds on as that feedback is very helpful.

(p.s. Anybody else notice that stuff below the toolbar in iCab, directly below the bookmark icon? What's up with that?)

Transcode it to H.264 with Handbrake or something. Xvid stuff won't use any hardware acceleration regardless of the app and will eat your battery life.

Just ordered mine on the Australian store. I managed to get the the 'buy' page before it was actually up on the main store page so hopefully I'm near the front of the queue. It says shipping in 2-3 weeks... Is that the actual timeframe or just a conservative estimate on their behalf?

Hey gaf whats the bst case for the iPad 2? I have the $40 Targus case and I don't like it that much. I'm looking for something that will also let me use it as a stand. Also, will stream to me allow me to download and save files that I transcode to my iPad so I could watch it later?

Ok, can we get a section in the OP for cases? Or link to other thread (needs to be updated)? We get the same questions about cases every couple of posts...
bareback ftw

I really like the History of Jazz app. Well worth $10 if you can spare it and are curious about the subject.

ebags.com has it cheaper and you can find coupons for 20% off and free shipping, if you care about the small savings.

I am having such a hard time finding one around here. Between the 2 best buys, the apple stores, the att stores and the few verizon stores. No one has gotten a new shipment in over a week. I'm about to just order online and wait it out. Is it really a month's wait? Or has someone gotten it sooner since it changed to that?

I ordered from MacConnection.com; they quoted a 2-week wait, but shipped in just one week. You can ask them what their current turnaround time is.

Do you have any Targets or Wal-Marts around? The Best Buys and Apple stores around here were completely sold out, but I had some good luck with Target. I was able to get one last Saturday, and another on Monday.
