Apple iPad 2 |OT|

I got my iPad as well from Burlington Mall Apple Store (MA). 16GB black :)

However my unit also has the leakage issue at the bottom. I will use it as an excuse to replace the unit when I feel the time is right. In the meantime the unit works perfectly fine.

I don't care much for the smart cover either due to it not sticking to the back. Most of my time has been without case.

The thinness is truly the killer feature. It is magazine thin and book heavy. Very impressive.

When I handed down my iPhone 3G it was in near perfect condition. Some minor scratches on the back, but suttle. Currently my iPhone4 that I've had almost a year could probably be sold as new. Both were alway naked.

My iPad can wait until I get it before I decide on a cover. The freaking smart cover looks cool as hell though!

Anyone ever use their iPad for note taking with a stylus? I would love to be able to take an iPad around to classes and be able to hand write my notes during lectures.

So I got the iPad and the poly case in blue...
To me, not much different than the 1g iPad minus the camera and the case is a little cumbersome.

Weird... I was so excited for this

Wait, WTF, no Facebook iPad app?
Haha I was forced to use the website. Looking at the ifixit breakdown of the parts the only thing new in this gen iPad is that they used a new CPU. Almost everything is recycle from iPad gen one. Also they used glue to a fix the front touch panel to the iPad. Wow looks like margins on this device are going to be quite high. The bleed from the panel might be because of the IPS panel edge doesn't have good contact with the top layer. now I know why the top glass doesn't exactly match the edge.

I predict the next refresh will have the LCD display glued to the capacitive layer, maybe higher resolution. The battery size is the same as the previous gen.

It's just sunk in that I've bought yet another Apple product. The experience was crazy, it was the first time I've ever stood in line on launch day... I drove by the store at 7 and the line was still going strong. I'm amazed how many 'regular folks' were in line. Everyone had an iPhone, iPod Touch, MacBook and even a few iPad1s—they all already own Apple products.

LC was right, for tablets the form is really part of the function.

Fold it in half and it magnetized to itself. The smart cover is great so far.
I folded it in half like i saw in the macworld video but i still have to hold it with my left hand to prevent flapping. I didnt get a cover for the first iPad either so I'll return this and just get a stand instead.

tablets suck...way overpriced. that said, even though I'm not an apple fan, the ipad 2 is the best deal out there (well except a nook color, but that has more compromises).

I'd be hard pressed not to get one if I were getting a dedicated tablet right now.

I have a Nook Color rooted and overclocked and it's in no way comparable to my 1st gen iPad, never mind the newer model.

I wonder why the iPad 2 would hold pages better than the iPhone 4 when they both have the same amount of RAM?

Also I'm not sure how they would do this but they need to do something like hp is doing with palm os that allows the two to interact with each other. Wouldn't it be nice if you could use the iPad iMovie to edit video you took on the iPhone? In all likelihood you're going to take video with the iPhone rather than the iPad.
Who knows, but RAM isn't everything. What's the version number of 4.3 on the iPad 2? Wonder if it's the same as the one released last week or if it's another temporary fork.

As for iDevice to iDevice, I feel the same way. Lion has AirDrop which appears to do something like "wifi direct" (direct wifi connection without a LAN, like Bluetooth), I'm hoping/expecting that for the next iOS.

I do. Well I use it for homework and for some business meetings, but close enough. I use the Boxwave/Griffin/Targus/Acase/etc one ($15-20), it's considered to be one of the better options out there. If you can make your own stylus there's a few designs that look like they could be pretty good, if a bit funky.

App wise I've been using Note Taker HD, others like Notes Plus and a few others. Recently I found out about another one in UPAD, and out of the many I've tried it appears to be the nicest. There's a lite version so try it out. There's a few niggles for me but it seemed pretty nice.

Remember kids, stay in school and you can get smart like me!

congrats to all of you getting your ipads today. I happen to have given mine away today, coincidentally (sister's birthday gift) so I'll be without iPad for around 3 weeks.

I need to be strong.

Isn't that light leakage the exact same thing that happened to the iPhone 4 and then it went away and nobody ever spoke about it again?

I assumed it was only with the early adopters because maybe Apple rushed the first shipments or something ..

ugghhh comic zeal on this new ipad is giving me grief. It keeps freezing when I try to install a big chunk of comics. Then when i finally got it my ipad got backed up on itunes and all my apps got deleted. arrrghhh

I played with the Motorola Xoom (which I guess is considered the #1 contender to the iPad right now) at the Tested offices earlier in the week and after a few minutes with the new iPad 2 it's so blindingly obvious how far Apple is ahead of the pack in this space. I think Jobs was right when he said that Apple would probably continue to dominate tablets in 2011 even if they didn't bother to revise the current iPad, but this new model, even though it is just an incremental update, pretty much ensures that they are going to continue to run rings around the competition in 2011, probably also in 2012 and maybe even beyond if they keep iterating like this. Seriously, the Xoom is pretty nice in many ways but it doesn't even come close to the iPad 2 user experience and physical feel. I can't imagine any business idea more foolish than trying to compete with Apple in tablets right now, the money you'd spend and lose would probably last longer if you just poured gasoline on it and burned it.

I think the whites are selling faster because a lot of people are superficial and want everyone to know they have the newest toy. With the white version, there is no mistaking that it's an iPad2.

Dang.

I got there at 4 and was like number 6xx. Didn't get it.

What happened with the iPhone 4 wasn't actually light leakage at all, it just looked that way. It was the glue used to bond the sheets of glass not having time to fully dry before sale since they were being shipped as soon as they were finished. After a few days of use, the discoloration supposedly goes away.

I'll sell you my 16 gig for 8 hundo.

I don't think the android OS is ready to hang with iOS, even if the form factor was ideal. It feels like it'll never cleanse the unix jank from its soul. Palm has a shot at making a nice OS, but HP is the last company I expect to produce non-chunky hardware.

Nah. The PC era is coming to an end and one much compete with mobile devices if you want to be relevant 10 years from now. Motorola is doing the right thing - the issue is that Google still has a ways to go before they are REALLY ready to compete with what Apple offers. Ecosystems are a bitch to get around. Apple learned that lesson when competing with Microsoft and they are using that very knowledge/experience to compete with everyone else.

Just got on the line at 5th Ave, probably 200ish people on line, whites are sold out, 16gbs are sold out, and so are all at&t's. Shiiettt

crazy day waited from 1:30 to 5 at Apple Store and got 64gb white Wifi and 64gb Black at&t for my co-worker. Went to Best Buy on the way home and got my wife a 64gb white at&t... she's happy...i`m happy.... and my buddy is happy

Oh and yea while its not a major upgrade over the 1 it just feels better using it, the quicker response time and weight just make it feel better overall

If your going to pick it u get a leather smart cover, it just feels like a million bucks

I got there at 1pm and was number 112. I'm not sure what number the guys who were at the head of the line at 7 were but they got there at 3:30pm.

I agree with Gary's assessment. The other tablet contenders still have some ways to catch up.

Hmm, That statement seems bold, but there is something to it. I use my iPhone now for many things that I don't even bother turning my PC on for. My PC used to be everything.

Boo!! The iPad HDMI adapter doesn't work on my TV. Just shows a black screen. So pissed. I bet it's because the device insists on 1024x768 and my TV refuses to display it.

Are there video out settings to mess with in the Settings app? From everything I've read it should be outputting 1080p with a black border, not straight up 1024x768.

Yeah you can't really fault Moto and others for going where the money is. A small chunk of a (possibly) large market is better than nothing (look at Macs)...and you have to start somewhere, might as well get in early (although debatably too early for the software but whatever).

Ah, thought you meant 7pm.

So...I live in the middle of the desert and near a military base.

I was like, let me try to get one at Best Buy. I had to drive an hour (so two-hour drive) to the nearest Best Buy. When I get there, I'm told they sold out. They only got 15 in and sold out in a half hour.

So on the way home, I stop by the Walmart in Yucca Valley. They have only one left, and it's the 64GB wifi monster. I didn't want it, as it was $700.

My last stop was the base, which had a 32GB wifi model left (they had the 16GB earlier in the day). I ended up picking it up but...

I'm wondering if I need the space. I'm not sure if I can ever fill up the 32 GBs. I have about four GBs of ebooks, might fill up 4GB of music but I can't say about the rest of the space.

This app is actually better then the iPhone app... Save for not being able to upload pictures.
I just discovered Friendly too. So much better than using either the iPhone app at 2x or the actual site. I like it. And I'm going to buy the full version.

I'm also thinking of buying both Angry Birds games (wish I could sync my games to all my versions) and GarageBand.

Still looking for some other HD apps for my new toy. Think I'll hunt down an iPad app thread. Does one exist?

Can't wait to get a cover for it. I already know I'm getting a Smart Cover. Are there any clear back covers available that work with the iPad 2 and still allow usage of the Smart Cover?

Got mine this afternoon. Ran to Best Buy right after work and got in line. I had heard earlier in the day (about 10am) there was about a half dozen people in line. I got there about 4:15pm and ended up being #9 in line. The guy first in line had been there since 1pm the previous day. The woman in front of me had no teeth AT ALL, who kept talking and talking...and I'd try not to look and try not to look. Best Buy had 5 16gb white wifi only and 5 32gb black wifi only....that was it. I got the last 16gb white one. Finally got home to bust into it and I really like the white color....even moreso than I originally thought.

Also to add, those Apple smartcases are a damn ripoff...only because they don't protect the back. I ended up getting the Griffin Elan Folio Slim case....which is a (probably fake) leather case that is just like the original Apple iPad case.

games become bigger and bigger. i have and 32GB iPod Touch and its almost full.

Man this update is taking forever, it's been like 1.5 hours there lol. So is this update significant for iPad 1 owners like myself?

For those with the wifi model, how is the battery drain in your iphone when using the hotspot feature?

Some opinons would be great, as this will be the determining factor of which model I'll get.

Thanks GAF, I <3 you!
