Too bad you don't live in the middle of nowhere in South Dakota like me. Walmart has 3 of each model just sitting there. Tempted but have the first ipad and gonna just wait it out till 3 is launched.

Seriously? I heard differently.

No, it really is an abomination for anything other than facetime. Pics are incredibly low res, lack any kind of definition and produce poor color accuracy.

What's the easiest way to share apps between family members?

Just authorize their main iTunes computer and then they can download the app I already have?

I'd get a Smart Cover if it protected the back, I slip it into my bag... so needs it.

lol

That's the best pic I could take. Tried to take one of the dog running around and it's even granier. This is pretty indefensible IMO

The smart cover as a movie stand is perfect. I think I can retire the picture frame stand I used for iPad 1.
One angle is good as a movie stand. The other angle is great when using the landscape keyboard. But I find neither of those angles ideal when using a bluetooth keyboard. I've signed up for the PadPivot Kickstarter instead.

Hey Giga, could you put a list of all the bluetooth keyboard hidden tricks in the OP or second post? I just found out what the eject button does

Wait, I thought the iOS 4.3 was already out? Even on the apple site it says:

The world’s most advanced mobile operating system keeps getting better. Download the free iOS 4.3 Software Update and get new features that let you do even more with your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The software update is free. It’s easy. And you can download it right now.

But when I try to update my iPad (1st generation) from the iTunes, it says I have the newest version installed (4.2). What the hell? Is the 1st gen iPad not getting this update or is it only available for iPad 2 for now and later for the original iPads?

They're not marketing it as a still camera for a reason.

My wife just told me she wants one, and our 5th anniversary is next week.

I think that's my cue. Can I get one? What's my best option?

I know someone with OG iPad who updated it just yesterday. Not sure why it's not letting you, but it's definitely possible.

It seems like the Smart Cover is the way to go in terms of screen protection and serving as a functional stand. But it may or may not be enough protection if you were to throw the iPad into a bag with a zillion other things.

Would a slipcase or pouch-style case designed to fit the original iPad be a good fit for an iPad 2 with the Smart Cover attached? Or would it be too big?

Yes. I have a Waterfield sleeve for the original iPad, and the iPad 2 with smart cover slipped right in. That's what I'm going to use for my bag. Depends on the case, obviously, but it should be fine.

It would fit. Smart Cover is very sturdy but sleek. I regret selling my old folio case with the ipad1 now and I'll be picking up another for cheap on Amazon

Weird. I'm downloading the latest version of the iOs (4.3) for my iPod Touch which isn't even last year's model, but the one before. I will try my iPad again later... :S

I read somewhere that it is a 1MP camera (rear)

It sure as hell looks like it. I can't begin to explain how bad these are. Even in the ipad, they look like shit lol

Did you ever use something like TinyUmbrella that messes with your hosts file? Try updating it manually with the IPSW.

Done.

Fair enough, but it would have been nice to have one that didn't look like it came from the late 90s. Considering the video editing software present on this thing, its a shame you have to resort to importing evrything rather than using the hardware available. Just looking at it from the perspective of convenience.

Around 3x faster, and that's being conservative.

I'm playig with a few tegra optimised games on my tablet and while performance is acceptable, I can't help but feel dissapointed. There a some games on the og ipad that run just as well as these "optimised" titles. Samurai II for instance, actually runs just as smooth on the I pad as it does in the xoom. In fact , the frame rate is even more consistent. I think the 3x thing is waaaaay conservative there bud.

Done.
I've never done anything like jailbreaking neither on my iPad nor my iPod Touch. Everything I got in both iDevices is 'legal' stuff :P

Anyway, right now it's downloading the iOS 4.3 for my iPod Touch, maybe that will let my iPad update as well?..

No, it's separate. You're pressing "check for update" with the iPad connected right?

You can also google for direct download links to the update and directions on how to manually update (which is perfectly legal to do and doesn't require jailbreaking or anything).

Every review of the iPad 2, including the ones that otherwise praise it to the high heavens, have mentioned how shitty the camera is, and that it's identical to the camera in the latest iPod touch. This should be no surprise.

Yep, the camera is beyond awful. It reminds me of the nintendo dsi camera.. inexcusable and embarrassing. Never really planned on using it in then first place though.

I'm 100% in love with brushes and it's super fast on the iPad 2!

Installs and updates are so fast compared to ipad1. That is one huge improvement I've seen. Dunno if it's partly due to the new OS though

Well, the video is supposedly acceptable. I haven't shot anything yet, but I'm also not looking forward to holding this thing up like an idiot anyway.

I think the camera is shit for three reasons:

1. Cost. they have to reach the $499 price point and maintain some margins.
2. Space. Remember, it's thinner than the iPhone 4. I don't know what the depth of these parts are, but it possible they couldn't fit a better part in the case at the right cost. This will get better as cameras get smaller.
3. Priority. They wanted FaceTime and video, good stills was not a primary objective, so combine all three points and make a compromise.

Personally, it's not a big deal. I have an iPhone 4 for photographs, and probably video as well, and I'd rather hold up something that size to shoot extended clips. I'm only interested in the iPad 2 for the editing ability and FaceTime.

EDIT: oh, and the inevitable AR stuff. Should be cool for that.

The AR stuff in which you'd have to hold the pad up, like an idiot (wink)? Having a good camera on the tablet is not as awkward as you'd think Tobor. Though its not really worth discussing any further. As you said, the thing wasn't intended to be used for stills or HQ recording; and more than likely for the reasons you specified.

True enough. I'll try to shoot some video in order to test out iMovie, should be ok for that.

Why are people so worried about the smart cover not covering the back? You can get a BSE or Zagg back-only for like $15. Perfect combo with the smart cover, IMHO. When I put it in my messenger bag, I just throw it in a 10" netbook sleeve that I had lying around for triple protection.

For me, I don't like the cover because it doesn't stick to the back. It just kinda hangs there. Mines going back.

That's true, but can't you just hold it against the back with your hands?
