ehh, iPad will never really be a "gaming machine" to me. It has nice games, but not as good (IMO) as dedicated gaming platforms (or devices that are first and foremost gaming platforms)

I tried it, still have the free trial. It runs MUCH better, the carousel mode is like butter now.

That's good to know, I may give it another chance when I get my iPad 2.

For people like me, who don't like the dedicated handhelds, or don't want more clutter, the iPad and iPhone are perfect for on the go gaming.

I wish the Navy leather cover was a little more Navy. It's not blue enough.

Woah, I'm on an iPad 2, it's kind of like having one for myself
:(
Edit:

Those benchmarks are crazy, I thought the xoom had the advantage on the hardware side of things.

To the guy who asked about Flipboard: I use it for all my Google Reader stuff and find it more than adequate. I'm just not a fan of Reeder's iPad interface until you're actually viewing an article.

Goddamn, those pictures of the white really may have sold me against the black. I really wonder if the "the white bezel is distracting" impressions really hold up all that much.

Lanley, I'll see you bright and early at 7am on Monday at 5th Avenue :) Is your info about a new shipment on Monday morning reliable ?

Yeah, that's what's so great about the iPad....it fits SO many different types of people/uses.

I like dedicated handhelds, and my iPad rarely is used for on the go.

Dreamcast has returned, in iPad form. Nvidia needs to step up it's game unless we get games with"the way it's mention to be played" money hats lol on multi platform titles

so much for iPad2 being just a "minor" upgrade after looking at those anandtech benchmarks. spec whores cannot ignore those benchmarks.

Loving this thing... My friend is driving now while I play with this and it is all I wanted. I have a wifi 32 gig but pulling signal from my iPhone using mywi 4.0. F paying for 3G.

I want to exchange my blue smart cover for the red one

Love my new ipad glad I skipped the first one. Are there any good 2 player games that work on the same device? Me and the gf wanna have some fun :)

Seeing those iPads laying on hard surfaces is making me cringe a bit. :)

Nice benchmarks. Prettier games please!
I hate when they put gadgets on concrete or asphalt for photos during reviews.

Drives me mad.

Its sorta is, the biggest investment they did was the A5 chip my guess is to drive the cost of the chip down with iPad in order to make bigger profits in iPhone and iPods

eh, I had my ipad laying on hard surfaces with no case for months and months. no scratches.

people get too easily freaked out about these things. aluminum is not that delicate.

But I was told that the Xoom specs were amazing.
The Tegra 2 is still pretty damn good. I think they went with the 543MP2 to power the inevitable retina display. It should last them two revisions up to the iPad 3 until we get a new GPU in the Apple A6 and iPad 4.

As reliable as one of the apple store employees standing outside the 5th Avenue stores earlier today can be. He seemed uncertain when exactly it would arrive on monday, but was pretty certain nothing would come in tomorrow.

On a related note, there were a huge amount of foreigners in line there today, something I found interesting.

Delicately placing them on a hard surface I'm fine with.
But the thought of them sliding a bit gives me chills.

The Engadget guy scratched his already.

is the smart cover able to fold over the back while using ipad?

Yep.

But what a Gaffer mentioned a few pages back. When you hold it out with the SM tucked behind the right magnet is not strong enough to hold and not hang, you have to fold it in half when its underneath.

LOVE the smart covers. NYT ran a good piece about how the on-off function is great because it really is like just opening a book to get started now, no need to click and then swipe.

Those pictures. @_@

What is the consensus on the smart cover? It looks like such a simple but amazing concept.

I love it, its great. But if you are a road warrior your bag better have extra padding because the SM is not enough to protect from any kind of impact or scratches on the rear of the iPad.

My thoughts exactly. I have a sleeve in my messenger bag that I'm using when on the go. For regular use, the smart cover is great (especially since I got mine for free, haha).

I like the idea of the smart cover on/off feature - but isnt it seriously insecure?

Is it a smart sleep mode so if you put the cover on while using it the screens turns off, but the device will still lock if you hit the physical sleep button, or does it completely override the unlock screen?

Nice to see that thing performs just as expected.

Account for the lowered resolution and it performs almost exactly 3x faster than Tegra 2 in a real world scenario, which is precisely where I thought it would wind up.

Its very unlikely that Tegra 3 will surpass this, it'll have enough trouble simply matching it. Its only applications optimised for more than 2 threads that will see any speedup compared to the A5 (and only in CPU bound scenarios) , which aren't going to be very common in this space for several years.

Apple really have nothing to fear about upcoming SOCs, nothing is going to offer a noticeable leap until well into 2012.

They've got a crazy scheme. The iPad creates mass production for the SoC, making it cheaper for the iPhone, which has a higher price (when including subsidy) and more people buy, increasing margins on the iPhone. By the time fall rolls around, the chip is cheap enough to put into the iPod Touch and Apple TV, increasing margins on these lower-priced products. And the iPod Touches start selling cameras in mass amounts that later go into the iPad, increasing margins on the iPad.

Sweet. Fingers crossed. Appreciate the heads up.

the iPad2 in essence feels more like a magazine/hardcover/newspaper than a computing device. It just blows away the Xoom and the iPad1. You'd have to look at the eink readers for a better comparison.

The smart cover is very nice and sleek. If you don't mind the flapping then it really adds to the experience.

it overrides the sleep and lockscreen. You can turn off the quick unlock though, and use the smartcover like a regular case.

Here's a couple of quick pics of my Waterfield sleeve. The iPad and cover slide right in, and it's really well protected.

Nice pics folks. White looks better than I expected. Can someone show me the facetime and/or photo booth interface?

I think I'm pretty much dead set on getting my first tablet now.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does the smart cover work on the iPad 1?
No, the iPad 2 has magnets installed in the side and face that allow the smart covers to work. Also, the hinge is designed to fit the new body design.

Those graphics benchmarks are a fair bit more impressive than I thought. Not entirely fair on the Xoom given the resolution difference, but still.

And holy crap am I glad Sony went with the sgx over a nvidia for NGP...

I saw a line of like 200 people yesterday waiting for the iPad 2 outside of an Apple store. The weirdest thing was that a lot of the people in line had iPads with them. Seemed like a waste to me.

Don't know how but my shinny new iPad has two small scratches in the back already and that's laying the iPad on my table on top of a micro fiber all the time and using it while laying on my bed.

I absolutely love the new iPad. So glad I skipped the first generation. Already got the typing down pretty well and this thing is blazing fast. I may get rid of my MacBook pro (and just use my work PC to sync with iTunes) because this thing does pretty much everything i need

Only gripe is no flash and GarageBand can freeze if I go a little crazy. Battery life is absurdly good, the new case is questionable (I want a back cover), GarageBand is a steal at $5 and the thing is just fun.

I'm glad I went straight to best buy and was able to get one. Does not surprise me in the least that people are going nuts for this. Those like me who skipped the first gen are now all over this thing. I can't see how anyone can compete with apple and this price point.

Thanks. That's not bad at all. Still glad I cancelled the black leather one though. Because now I want a red one.

Edit: Crap! now the covers are saying 3-4weeks. Oh that's for the red leather. Polyurethane Green 1-2days
