Oh, fuck it. I don't need an iPad 2. I'm gonna go get an iPad 1 from Best Buy today and save myself a $100, along with jailbreaking.

Only Best Buy? It is 399 for the 16G Wifi.

I got an Iphone 4 because it contained an HD camera so I could film snippets of my baby boy's life. At just over 4 months old, I have seen him drawn to touch screens. I let him pick out Pokemon and attacks on my game of Soul Silver, and he will randomly touch the Iphone 4's screen to move stuff. My question is this, does the Ipad make a good teaching tool for a toddler? I know they react well to instant feedback, but are the applications there to support it? Also, would the screen scratch too easily? I would not be against getting a protector sheet for the screen.

As the parent of a 3 year old who started using the original iPad when he was 2.5 I give an absolutely positive 2 thumbs up on the software that's out there for toddlers. It's only getting better with time, too. My boy loves the iPad.

EDIT: I bought that Griffin case from Best Buy earlier. Far, far better than the official case. Thanks for the info!

Just a word of warning from the experiences I've heard and the things I've seen in my first hand experiences. If you do this, you're pretty much buying them an iPad of their own. You likely won't be able to substitute an iPod Touch, and definitely won't be able to get them to use like those digital Leapfrog devices. Once they get used to an iPad, especially with the screen size, just assume you'll be getting them one since they likely won't be open to anything smaller or lesser. I've seen it too many times now. Sharing it with them won't do any good because they'll always want to use it.

Personally I think it's a shitty deal. The iPad 2 improvements are more than worth the extra $100 IMO. And iPad 2 will probably be jailbroken before you even get your iPad 1 home.

Yeah if I were looking at an ipad right now I think the hardware increases are worth the extra hundred bucks. I'm still thinking about buying a 64GB version or maybe wait for a 64GB itouch gen 5 not sure yet (I have a 3G itouch currently).

The only thing I don't understand about the ipad 2 is why there is only 512mb of ram when it has a dual core cpu and gpu in it. Go for 1GB apple!

Because there is no need for 1GB, tell me one thing that it would improve immensely besides your e-penis.

You already bought an Apple product doesn't that qualify for e penis status in the first place?

Anyways I still hear there are some ram issues with websites loading with IPad 2. Not as bad as the first one. Let us face it Apple putting a dual core cpu and gpu in the device is targeted at gaming. Developers will take as much ram as they can get.

Let me give you another example. I'll admit I play the Dash games on my ipod touch ( I like em shaddup!) and my 3G only has 256mb ram. On some of the later stages on Hotel Dash the 2d animated sprites chop at times and the game hiccups as there is too much on screen at once.

Seems fine to me, nothing major that could be changed.

Developers are limited when it comes to RAM, they can't take up as much as they want. I'm sure you won't have an issue with your Dash games when it comes to 512MB of RAM.

I've been able to load everything I need in all 9 tabs with no issues. It's okay to want more RAM, but it clearly doesn't need it. I can load 4 pages of The Big Picture without issue, what else is there that's more RAM intensive than that?

Apple is hosting a clinic on experience vs specs with this device. And the MacBook Air, for that matter.

My son is only 4 months old so I think I will have upgraded by the time he will want one of his own. I also hope that the forward march of computing will come up with better kids toys as well. For right now I just want to engage him, teach him, and entertain his little mind.

Love the ipad 2 but I gotta say, the camera is shitastic for still pics. It's looks like 2 megapixels or some shit lol

The camera may be shit but it has nothing to do with megapixels. A 2 megapixel camera can take better pictures than a 10 megapixel camera if it has a higher quality sensor and a better lens. It seems apple skimped on these parts.

I am really tempted to get one. I have some savings and have always wanted a tablet. I have heard ebooks/digital comics are pretty awesome on the iPad. I am especially interested in how you could read comics/manga. I have seen American comics in cbr format before. Are there good apps for those kind of files?

I will say that it is currently THE best device on the market to read cbr/cbz files. I use Comic Zeal which does cost money but there are free alternatives if you look in the iPad 1 threads. Changing pages, managing your collection, zooming and moving around the page is easy. Most programs now use iTunes to get files on the device if you were wondering.

yeah, good point on the Air. I had forgotten about that but most people who got them were really surprised at how fast almost everything felt despite there being a lowly C2D chip in there.

SSD goes a long way, I suppose.

Have you tried opening a few image heavy pages, then switch to a game (Infinity Blade) and back to the browser again. The pages still there or do they have to reload. iCab doesn't seem neccesary on the iPad 2 anymore if that Tipb impression is indicative of the browser experience in Safari.

I'm still going to wait for that delicious 1gb of ram in iPad 3 though the iPad 2 is more impressive ram wise than I innitially thought, that's for sure.

That's perfectly fine that you want to do that. It's just a warning that once you start them on something like that, they really won't accept anything less. I've seen parents try to give their kid an iPod Touch after letting them play with their iPad for awhile. It just doesn't work very well. Also assume if you have multiple kids, you'll have to give them each their own device since there will be a lot of fighting over if they have to share. I saw what happened with my nieces after they got their own iOS device to play with; I fear what happens if they ever saw the iPad since right now they don't realize it exists.

Quick q about Canadian/USA taxes. If my lady is going back home to Canada and she orders it online and brings it back in her packed baggage, we can get away with no paying taxes at all right (I don't know if buying online in Canada adds tax)

Cheers

how long is she staying away? different countries have different rules for how much you can bring back tax-free after a certain stay.

if it's 24 hours, she will very likely have to pay taxes

It'll be about 2 weeks, then again in June for a wedding. I might just wait till June to save more money to be honest!

And the 3G will work outside of Canada I presume?

yeah, you should be OK. check US customs site to be sure (if it's reversed and a Canadian goes to the states, they get up to 750 USD purchases tax exempt if they're gone for more than 5 days)

the canadian 3G version will work on AT&T 3G service, as I've read it's sim unlocked.

Are the 3G bands still not compatible with T-Mobile US? Just wondering if this could be predictive of whether iPhone 5 will be released on T-Mobile at launch.

I'll strongly suggest to anyone deciding between the iPad1 and iPad2 to first hold both in hand before making a choice.

I can try that for you later. Out at the moment. :)

The Air is awesome but I feel like the iPad makes laptops obsolete in a sense.

Just get a desktop and use Mr. iPad as your in-between.

Thats the thing with apple, they can stretch 512mb of ram better than the competition can with 1gigs. Even one, honeycomb tablets like the xoom don't run as well as the iPad 2 and it has double the ram. Sill that change eith software updates? Sure, but even then apple's biggest strength is how well they tune their software to match the hardware. This is one area that they are far ahead of the competition.

Everyone listen to this man. There's no point in owning a laptop and buying an iPad. Desktop + iPad = perfect combo.

yeah, pretty much me too.

After selling my iPad1 to get the iPad2 I went back and re-evaluated whether or not I wanted to get an Air or MBP instead. I came to the above conclusion after going through it all...

You are right .Ipad 1 300dlls may be...

I know this is off-topic, but because so many of you are Mac users, does anyone here know of a good piece of software that can stream from PC to Mac, audio and video like you can find on iPad/iPhone?

sure is. my 3 year old is taking over my iPad 1 and she's learning a lot. the touch interface is perfect for kids because in general they're physical creatures that love to fiddle with things. I just hand over the ipad and she figures everything out on her own. for the more complex apps I just show her how to use the interface once and/or how to play a game and she's off to the races. I have no doubt the iPad is enriching her life and accelerating her development. she was playing angry birds and navigating the Netflix app at 2 years old. mind-blowing stuff to see her command the device.

A friend gave me money to pick up an iPad 2 for him, he is giving his iPad 1 to his young kid because apparently it's a constant battle for ownership in his house. I guess little kids really love these touch devices. So now he has his shiny iPad 2 and his son gets the iPad 1 all to himself. Seems like that might be a common situation among iPad households with kids.

My kids refuse to use any product with less than 1 gig of RAM.

Nah. I've held both in my hand and I wasn't impressed with the hardware upgrade (to the point where it's worth $100). Sure, it is certainly thinner, but there's something I like about the iPad 1.

And $100 is a lot of money saved, to me. Actually, I ended up saving more than that. Just walked in the house with a 16GB and paid $369 for it. Can't wait to get to browsing on this thing.

Honestly, I won't be needing the extra browsing power. I was waiting for a price drop the entire time, and the gadget lust for the iPad 2 wore off and I realized that at sub $400, the iPad was a perfect pickup for me.

And I'll be using it for casual browsing, email, and other things. I won't need the extra core, although it certainly is nice for those that have it now. I think by the time we really start seeing apps that can run exclusively on the ipad 2 while making the iPad 1 look pedestrian, we'll be seeing rumors and specs for the iPad 3 come out. I'll definitely upgrade to that when the time comes.

Does the iPad keyboard dock work for the iPad 2? And what's the best option for an iPad 2 case? I'm at best buy now. I have a smart cover , I just want more protection

According to this, yes, but it is harder to put on. But the fit is not loose or anything, so it won't be precarious or anything.

I recommend a bluetooth keyboard, since it works with the iPad and other electronics.

Edit: Link above only talks about the DOCK, not the Keyboard dock. Don't know the status of Keyboard dock.

I just slotted my keyboard dock in to test it, I am typing on it now. Yes it works and fits fine :)

Keyboard dock was a bit of a failure, it's EOL, discontinued. If you have to, get a BT keyboard.

Not for me. iPad is just too limited to serve as a true portable replacement. I have an Air - and I don't think it's possible for an iPad to substitute for it outside of Web and Email.

I mean, the air lasts 7 hours and I can do so much with it - this is just hyperbole.

Thanks guys... I decided to hold off and I will order a Bluetooth keyboard off amazon or something...

Also what's a good case to order... I saw the griffin one in best buy but I can't put the iPad with smart cover in it. Are there any nice cases or carry cases that I shouldn't looking at? Thanks again
